Music publishers are stepping up their campaign to remove guitar tablature from the Net. Recently Guitartabs.com received a nastygram from lawyers for the National Music Publishers Association and The Music Publishers Association of America. These organizations want to stretch the definition of their intellectual property to include by-ear transcriptions of music. Guitartabs.com is currently not offering tablature while the owner evaluates his legal options.
How many of these same musicians cut their teeth doing covers of other artists' music, learning by copying the "intellectual property" of others?
Their translations are not even very good.
I have seen “by ear” transcriptions of many pieces, in book form, and most seem to have deliberate errors, no doubt to protect against copyright suits.
I guess my ears are illegal copying machines, now............Obama must be a super criminal.........
Lol!
This has happened to a number of tab and Guitar Pro sites lately and its a bit over the top. One of the main Guitar Pro sites moved their server from France to Russia so they’re out of anyones jurisdiction now.
Soon you’ll get sued for singing along with a tune.

They have a right to protect what they have created.
Ears are now considered 'pirating equipment' under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. MPAA and RIAA are working with Apple to release licensed i-Ears with appropriate DRM in time for Christmas.
I used to download tabs and found great enjoyment learning new songs this way. Most tab sites have quit tho under pressure from lawyers.
Blasphemy!
Jimi Hendrix would never have gotten off the ground. He covered everything from Wild Thing, Hey Joe, All Along The Watchtower, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Hound Dog, Little Red Rooster, Catfish Blues, Red House...
and it he did it by ear.
This is getting ridiculous. Tabs have been around forever, they have never been a major source of profit for musicians anyway, and most of them are done by listening to the music and writing the music down (or typing it into a tabulature program.)
So now listening to music and figuring out the notes is illegal?
The music industry, and it’s affiliates, are creating their own doom. It’s getting to the point that they are too greedy, too fascist in enforcing copyright, and driving their market away from their products.
The only way for this to stop is for musicians to *stop* joining these organizations, stop doing business with anyone associated with these people, and standing up for their rights.
Rubbish, in fact. Incorrect keys, totally wrong positions/fingerings, etc.
In other words, hacks writing for hacks. Let's face it - 80% of rock/pop tunes shouldn't require any written notation with their I/IV/V progressions and easy-to-pick-up-by-ear arrangements.
Many publishers of instructional DVDs have been dodging the copyright laws for years with titles like "In The Style Of The Eagles" - all the greatest hits are presented in 10-second bites with album/song titles cleverly omitted even though the passages are played to mimic the records. Perhaps the authors/distributors hope to hide behind fair use.
The sheet music industry are even more technophobic than the RIAA however - they still want to sell actual sheets! PDFs would sell like hotcakes and despite any threat from end-user copying it would almost certainly replace the lost revenue from hard-copy sales.
I rarely look at sheet music but I seem to recall single songs priced in excess of $10.00. Once again, an entire industry segment fails basic economics.
Land of a Thousand Dances...
“Na nana na na na na na na...”
If that song is now stuck in your head, you owe the RIAA a royalty each time you think about it today. < /s >
I am a proponent of copyright protection and all that, but lately this has been getting RIDICULOUS.
Ack! How could you post that to this thread? Now anyone that reads this thread is guilty of piracy. < /s >
Sheet music has been bootlegged since day one.
And in the 1800s it could cost 50cents or more for a song. Figure out that in modern currency.
Ha! I remember how PO’d Edward Van Halen was when Eruption came out in tableture. He didn’t mind covering the Kinks in VH-1 though.
Does this also cover really bad songs? There is no way that ‘baby, baby don’t get hooked on me’ is “intellectual” property by any stretch of the term.
