How many of these same musicians cut their teeth doing covers of other artists' music, learning by copying the "intellectual property" of others?
Their translations are not even very good.
I have seen “by ear” transcriptions of many pieces, in book form, and most seem to have deliberate errors, no doubt to protect against copyright suits.
I guess my ears are illegal copying machines, now............Obama must be a super criminal.........
This has happened to a number of tab and Guitar Pro sites lately and its a bit over the top. One of the main Guitar Pro sites moved their server from France to Russia so they’re out of anyones jurisdiction now.
Soon you’ll get sued for singing along with a tune.

They have a right to protect what they have created.
I used to download tabs and found great enjoyment learning new songs this way. Most tab sites have quit tho under pressure from lawyers.
Jimi Hendrix would never have gotten off the ground. He covered everything from Wild Thing, Hey Joe, All Along The Watchtower, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Hound Dog, Little Red Rooster, Catfish Blues, Red House...
and it he did it by ear.
I am a proponent of copyright protection and all that, but lately this has been getting RIDICULOUS.
Ha! I remember how PO’d Edward Van Halen was when Eruption came out in tableture. He didn’t mind covering the Kinks in VH-1 though.
Does this also cover really bad songs? There is no way that ‘baby, baby don’t get hooked on me’ is “intellectual” property by any stretch of the term.
;o)
test
There’s nothing illegal about playing or transcribing someone else’s music. Publishing it or performing it in public without compensation to the author is another matter altogether.
Rock & Roll ping!
Here’s my response to all the ‘intellectual property’ arguments that some are bound to make:
I don’t see how this is the same as downloading music. The tab does you no good if you don’t have the chops to play it anyway, and if you can pull it off, it’s not like you’re going to book a gig at the corner club and play Pink Floyd tunes, and charge $200 a ticket as if it was really Floyd. There’s no comparison to the actual music.
The music industry is digging it’s own grave here.
Do you know of any bands who actually encourage people to learn their songs? Seems like a smart thing to do marketing-wise- much the way the Dead allowed and encouraged bootleg recordings at their events.
Someone once asked Dave Van Ronk for permission to post tab of one of his arrangements to which he replied “sure go ahead, I stole them all myself.” Seems like some musicians don’t care and some really fell threatened by tab sites.
It's not about musicians but business of music. It is the same kind of difference as between a doctor and a hospital.
Well at least it used to be.
Personally, I would be flattered if someone else wanted to imitate my playing style. But that is highly unlikely.
