Don’t Get Weak (Thomas Sowell)
NRO ^ | May 1, 2007 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 06/02/2007 7:15:55 AM PDT by Dan Evans

When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can’t help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup.

From News Hounds:

Hannity & Colmes Guest Says Military Coup "May Be The Only Thing That Can Save This Country"

On the 5/28/07 edition of Hannity & Colmes, author, columnist and professor Thomas Sowell explained why he thinks a military coup may be the only thing that can save the United States. During the same show, Sowell also complained that Republicans are too wishy-washy and not outraged enough. With video.

I’m not sure if the interview with Sowell was a rerun of a segment I previously missed or had been pre-taped for airing on Memorial Day (the show seemed to be comprised of a mixture of both). During his portion of the interview, Alan Colmes questioned Sowell about a recent National Review column in which he wrote, “When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can’t help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup.”

Colmes asked how serious Sowell was about that.

Sowell replied, “I’m very serious about whether or not the country can be saved at all in the long run, especially with Iran moving toward nuclear weapons, with so many signs of degeneracy – the schools, whatnot. Heaven knows, I don’t want to see a military coup but I don’t want to see the society disintegrate, either.”

Yes, I've been wondering the same thing lately.

We live in interesting times.

That is a scary question. I've wondered about it myself. Wouldn't want to face up to that decision.

I think we should exhaust some alternatives first:

- A constitutional convention

- A constitutional convention to allow states to secede

We tried that once. You might have heard about it,it made all the papers. However the Federal Government decided it could keep the states in line at the point of a gun. They decided that the GOOD of the many gave them the right to to seize certain states as to prevent them from seceding.

We tried that once.

Passing an secession amendment? When?

The only reason it wasn't included in the Constitution is that everyone assumed that the right of secession already existed.

FreeRepublic is now infested with neo-Confederate totalitarians. Literally.

Sowell is completely off base. No matter how much living in a Nanny State like France may suck, that shame is nowhere comparable to overthrowing the government because you don’t get your way on, let us say, stemcell research or tax cuts.

Sheesh.

CALL! CALL! CALL! CALL! AND KEEP CALLING TILL THE LINES FRY!

WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! TILL YOU RUN OUT OF INK IN YOUR PEN!

Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti illegal immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them. This is a bipartisan issue not a Conservative or Liberal issue BUT AN AMERICAN issue.

STOP AMNESTY NOW!! WE CAN DO IT!!

The best way to stop Shamnesty

As I posted the other day. I think people need to read or reread the Bill of Rights.

Superb. I liked “A reader wrote: “Have you ever noticed that opinion polls ask the opinions of people who have no expertise in the subject on which they are being polled and publish these opinions as if they were gospel truth instead of group ignorance?”

Wasn’t it Lincoln who said a bloody revolution was the right and in fact the duty of those who saw no other way to restore the rights to the people.

We have been given a way to control those who govern us in a peaceful manner. If that doesn’t work then we are left with the choice between seeing our way of life disappear or do what it takes to preserve it.

One poster talks about tax cuts and stem cell research. It goes far beyond that. It goes to having our country overrun by illegal immigrants who have no interest in seeing “The American Way” continue other than to assure they get their piece of the pie. We have government at various levels that seems blind to the dangers posed by Islamofascists an Sharia law. Read through the Declaration of Independence. It lists the reasons why we felt it necessary to overthrow the existing government. We’re right back to a lot of those reasons.

Sadly we’ve reached a point where term limits may well be our last hope. With over half the population working for the government or getting government benefits we are not very likely to dis-elect those who do the hiring and pass out the pork.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not calling for a overthrow of the government by force. But we certainly can’t rule it out if things continue the way they are.

Good point about not overthrowing the government because you don’t get your way . . . on tax cuts. What were those neo-Confederate totalitarian crazies like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Patrick Henry thinking?

If King George had only cut the tax rate on stamps and tea, what a great guy he would have been, right? :)

Actually, King George III was a pretty good leader compared to what we have today - I can’t imagine him (Unlike Jorge the II) pushing the American colonists to import millions of spanish speaking foreigners and give them welfare and freebies paid for by American taxpayers.

Seceding wouldn’t really fix the problem Sowell is writing about. They would still have the military.

I think it’s ridiculous to even talk about such fantasies when we haven’t even started to fight with the basic tools of rebellion our laws offer us.

Perpetual recall drives of political rats and rinos would be the starting point. We watched it work with Gray Davis and then we just stopped using that wrench. Let them have their street marches while we invest our energy having recall drives.

States that don’t have recall provisions should fight at the state level to have such provisions brought into law.
