Hannity & Colmes Guest Says Military Coup "May Be The Only Thing That Can Save This Country"

On the 5/28/07 edition of Hannity & Colmes, author, columnist and professor Thomas Sowell explained why he thinks a military coup may be the only thing that can save the United States. During the same show, Sowell also complained that Republicans are too wishy-washy and not outraged enough. With video.

I’m not sure if the interview with Sowell was a rerun of a segment I previously missed or had been pre-taped for airing on Memorial Day (the show seemed to be comprised of a mixture of both). During his portion of the interview, Alan Colmes questioned Sowell about a recent National Review column in which he wrote, “When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can’t help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup.”

Colmes asked how serious Sowell was about that.

Sowell replied, “I’m very serious about whether or not the country can be saved at all in the long run, especially with Iran moving toward nuclear weapons, with so many signs of degeneracy – the schools, whatnot. Heaven knows, I don’t want to see a military coup but I don’t want to see the society disintegrate, either.”

Wasn’t it Lincoln who said a bloody revolution was the right and in fact the duty of those who saw no other way to restore the rights to the people.

We have been given a way to control those who govern us in a peaceful manner. If that doesn’t work then we are left with the choice between seeing our way of life disappear or do what it takes to preserve it.

One poster talks about tax cuts and stem cell research. It goes far beyond that. It goes to having our country overrun by illegal immigrants who have no interest in seeing “The American Way” continue other than to assure they get their piece of the pie. We have government at various levels that seems blind to the dangers posed by Islamofascists an Sharia law. Read through the Declaration of Independence. It lists the reasons why we felt it necessary to overthrow the existing government. We’re right back to a lot of those reasons.

Sadly we’ve reached a point where term limits may well be our last hope. With over half the population working for the government or getting government benefits we are not very likely to dis-elect those who do the hiring and pass out the pork.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not calling for a overthrow of the government by force. But we certainly can’t rule it out if things continue the way they are.

I think Mr. Sowell is one of our finest thinkers today.

He ain't perfect, though, and maybe I am reading this out of context, but I think he is off base. In fact, I think perhaps some here are reading more into this than what he intends.

Mr. Sowell:
Before we can suggest a solution we ought to define the problem. Right now the problem is not well-defined, but several trends are noted that if continued would drive the system outside the operating parameters. Let’s find out what is actually going on and if there is a reasonable and intelligent plan for this. Clearly if there is such a plan it hasn’t been explained to anybody anywhere outside the most secret chambers of our keepers.

I have heard grumblings of a CWII from some very surprising places. People that I would never have expected to make such a comment.

That Sowell is now saying it only emphasizes the other people I’ve heard mention it. It’s been talked about semi-openly at dinner parties for a couple of years. These are people who are tired of their productivity being taken away from them at gunpoint to be given to unproductive people. These are not the Neo-Confederates that so often get bantered about here.

I’ve had the same fear, myself, lately. I’ve been reading some Roman history, as well as some novels about the last century of the Roman republic. There are enough similarities to our time as to make me nervous about our future.

The Roman republic was so rife with corruption and dissention that there were several attempts at coup d’ etat, repeated attempts to overhaul the constitution, and finally, civil war.

The civil wars ended with the victory of Octavian over Antony.

Octavian got it right. He established imperial rule, but let the Romans think they still had a republic. They were so grateful for the end of the civil wars that they willingly participated in the delusion. It wasn’t until the next generation, and the next emperor, Tiberias, that they realized that something fundamental had changed. By then, they didn’t care.

I fear that we may be facing a similar future, and similar decisions.

I hope folks don’t take Mr. Sowell out of context on this. I think he’d make a great VEEP on the GOP ticket.

It's not a matter of "if" but "when".

Our country is infested with political, cultural and economic parasites that have no concern for America's long term health.

Any political system so assaulted can't survive indefinitely.
