How do you say "schadenfreude" in French?
I become overwhelmed with joy when I see socialists crying like the whiney babies they are. : )
I agree, although I love to joke about the French in my classes. We should NEVER give up on any of these European countries, as we owe some of our heritage to virtually all of them.
Let's see if he stands up to the Muslim nutballs and the unions. I know, no one can do it all, overnight, but I'd welcome a start.
Sarko is NOT conservative in the US sense of the word. He is much better thought of as a “Guiliani”, not a “Reagan” or “Thatcher”

Likud chairman Benjamin Netanyahu said Nicolas Sarkozy's election in France was good news for France and for Israeli-French relations.
"Sarkozy is a friend to Israel, and a personal friend of mine," Netanyahu said. "He wants to help Israel achieve true peace, and he knows our security needs." (Amnon Meranda)
“In addition, no more freedom fries and we can drink French Champagne and wonderful French wines again.”
And, we can eat French cheeses again (epoises, pont l’eveque....mmmmmmmm!)
Great statement about the way elections are now fought ... it is very tough to get a “win” now by this type of percentage.
Hahahahahahahahahah.... everyone understands it in every language :)
It just shows that a campaign using Bush as a scapegoat will rarely work outside of the US. If you run a campaign where the only thing you can do is demonize a foreigner, well, that probably isn’t going to pay off too much at the ballot box.
Anyways, I find it interesting that Europe seems to be taking a sudden lurch to the right. With the poor performances of socialists in Italy and Spain (and low approval ratings) I would expect that they will be heading to the right as well. Who knows, maybe even the UK might get a somewhat conservative government in the future (as Euroskepticism is growing there).
Re: “Mediterranean Union” ... You are right about turkey, etc... This has been batted around for some time now, by economic and security interests around the Mediterranean:
From: http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,2144,2343020,00.html
“Sarkozy has proposed [supported would be a better word here] the idea of a Mediterranean Union, modeled on the EU, but which would include Turkey. He said the union would work closely with the EU, and have some shared institutions. The plan would institute a “shared judicial area,” to combat corruption, terrorism and organized crime, including people smuggling. Sarkozy said it would also incorporate tighter immigration controls, a ploy he hopes will woo voters from further right.”
From: http://www.armeniandiaspora.com/archive/87548.html
“During a visit to Turkey, Assembly of French Chambers of Commerce
and Industry (ACFCI) President Jean Francois Bernardin said Turkey
and France should make initiatives to establish a Mediterranean
Union, saying that cultivating a stronger Mediterranean identity,
in coordination with the EU would expand the region economically
and culturally”
btt
France is a little like New York City, where the choice is usually between a moderate Democrat running as a Republican versus a raving Trotskyite running as a Dem
I wish France the best. It will be tough to throw off the power of the unions there.....but hope enough of the French are fed up as you said, Jeff, that they will LOUDLY support whatever measures are taken to bring France out of their socialist cellar.
Isn't this a good omen for our own elections? As in Canada, the socialists LOST.
Of course the MSM ignores these defeats of Hitlery's cousins - of the Dems fellow Socialists - but it should be heartening that EVEN in FRANCE, the socialist ideal has been rejected! Expose the US Socialists for what they are and they will be defeated ALSO.
I agree, if the riots start he will need to nip them in the bud right from the start.
I know you sound happy, but it remains to be seen if Sarkozy has the will to do what is required. I hope for France’s sake that he does. But like Americans, the French are not yet willing to accept the direness of their situation.
That was quick and I am glad that President Bush called Sarkozy that early to congratulate him for becoming the next French President.
I’ll have some french fries.. oh yeah... =)
Being an observant survivor, who learns from history --- isn't a case of "deciding in advance to be unhappy with everything"..
One does become a little cynical or harder to fool or please after experiencing 7 decades of bullshit from politicians...
Is is more a case of seeing the Emperor has no clothes and not indulging in hero worship of those who haven't yet earned that worship.
It appear that most folks are satisfied with less than what is required....
The nation has undergone decades of lower standards and lowered expectation's.....
As a result, our candidates have rushed to the bottom to satisfy the demand..
There are many folks in our Congress today, who couldn't have been hired to ANY position of public or private trust, just 40 or 50 years ago....
I look at the current list of candidates for President --- and feel a cold fear for the Republic..
