The duration and distance were short, but in those dizzying seconds and feet, Gov. Jon Corzine suffered injuries serious enough to land him in intensive care with a breathing tube down his throat and a doctor declaring him lucky to be alive. The 60-year-old governor underwent about two hours of surgery last night to repair multiple broken bones, including 12 ribs and a femur that protruded through the skin of his thigh following a car accident on the Garden State Parkway in Galloway Township.
With two of his adult children by his beside, Corzine, sedated and on intravenous painkillers, remains in intensive care in Cooper University Hospital in Camden this morning. He required seven pints of blood, officials said, and is using a breathing tube to ease his respiration with the broken ribs, and a broken breastbone.
The governor also suffered a broken collarbone and lower back bone and a flap-like cut on his skull, which was a plastic surgeon stitched back together.
Corzine spokesman Anthony Coley said the governor did not appear to have suffered brain or spinal cord damage.

That's great, Hal!

You had to have a pretzel makeover to contort your mind to “their” way of, (I hesitate to use the word) thinking.
Agreed, it is the impression given by the MSM that I’m against. Like, icy roads cause accidents. That sort of thing.
I agree they are probably generally good things.
2 seconds to cut? For a bystander? I don’t think so! Does he have a good knife on him?
Anyway, the point is I am sick and tired of these nanny-state laws that have NOTHING to do with violating OTHERS’ rights. Making me a criminal for not wearing a seatbelt. Yeah, I’m a real rebel, a real scofflaw; danger to society!
Those laws are only applicable to the little people.
Sheesh - he's only 60, not 90! Sixty is NOT considered old by most people, especially those of us who have reached it in good health and in good physical condition. If Corzine is in good shape, his recovery will be a lot easier than someone who has let themselves go, whatever their age.
I don't like his political ideology, but I do wish him a speedy recovery.
Yes, we sure do...and probably one of the first states to have one....
Two states (New Jersey and New York) enacted mandatory seat belt laws in 1984
I can't believe he was in the front of the SUV....and not wearing one - I can't imagine the long horror he has in front of him with recovery - he has significant serious injuries
I'm not sure about God punishing him for that or not, but, it did cross my mind that had he not been trying to take advantage of the situation, he might not be in the hospital right now.
LOL! Thanks. I needed that.
Prayers for his recovery.
I broke my collarbone twice at age 18 and I was able to predict the weather for more than 10 years afterwards. The weather prediction abilities are now finished, but I still can remember the pain of it breaking the first time, and then rebreaking it a week later after it had started to heal.
The SUV was struck by a white pickup?
Wow! And Diana was supposedly struck by a white car. This is getting to be like the Loch Ness monster of car wrecks.
Bad reading on my part. I thought you said “EMTs” but you said “NOT EMTs”. Sorry.
I’m sorry to hear that. Whatever happened to the trooper? Nobody seems to write about him/her. Those injuries must also be severe.
I torn on seat belt laws. Yes, I should have the right to kill myself any way I see fit.
But it is also shown that drivers not wearing seat belts endanger other drivers. Still, I don’t support mandatory seat belt laws.
I also hate the rules that say I can’t put my kids in the front seat (fortunately, my state doesn’t have mandatory primary penalties for it, and my one child is old enough and the other large enough that I won’t be questioned anyway).
The “harm” of having my child in the back seat outweighs the minor chance of additional injury being in the front seat where I can watch them and ensure they are buckled and sitting straight. I do push the seat all the way back for them to get them farther from the air bag.
I do have curtain and side air bags in the back, so I’m not sure they aren’t in danger sleeping against the door anyway.
I wear a seat belt all the time both because it keeps me safer, and because I think my policy will punish me if I don’t and cause an accident.
What are the odds of two elected governors of NJ in a row shattering their femurs while down the Shore?
Yes, people in the front seat have to wear seatbelts.
“Whatever happened to the trooper? Nobody seems to write about him/her. Those injuries must also be severe.”
The reports I’ve read so far say that no one else was injured. Perhaps injuries occurred to the only one not wearing a seat belt in the front seat?
“But it is also shown that drivers not wearing seat belts endanger other drivers”
What?
Anyway, the usual specious argument is “it’ll raise insurance rates”. Big freakin’ deal. If we go on these specious, ludicrous domino-effect reaction theories, EVERYTHING needs to be regulated because everything is affected by everything.
Another reason: my mother has claustrophobia. She has a problem with belts in particular (indeed, that’s what caused her problem, as a child by ruthless hospital workers), and just doesn’t feel comfortable wearing them.
Liberal answer: get therapy.
Sure, pay out all kinds of money for a minor problem that may never be resolved. Just to make her wear a freakin’ seatbelt. Or else she’ll be molested by police and fined.
Bottom line is SHE ISN’T HURTING ANYONE, including herself. The only hurt occurs on the FAT chance she has an accident.
What a total communist haven we are becoming, even pondering that this is OK to do. Founders would be absolutely appalled - even if we DID “vote” for it.
If they didn’t say, they WERE NOT wearing seatbelts.
Paternalistic authoritarians NEVER fail to mention when a “non-victim” was WEARING a belt, and they NEVER fail to mention when a “victim” was NOT wearing a belt.
