Duke looks within for solutions

April 9, 2007, 4:21 PM EDT

Whatever the state attorney general says and whenever he says it, do not expect Duke University to give the lacrosse players named in last spring's scandal any commendations from the university.

Reade Seligmann, David Evans and Garden City's Collin Finnerty were indicated on charges of rape, kidnapping and sexual offense after a female dancer claimed she was assaulted at a team party. The rape charge was dropped by District Attorney Mike Nifong, who himself is under investigation for ethics violations. North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper is reviewing the remaining charges. Finnerty has taken classes at Hofstra and volunteers as a coach at Chaminade.

A major component in the Duke assessment was coaching. "One of the things we certainly have come to understand in this case is that the coaches in general in each of our sports are responsible for the behavior of their teams," Burness said. That's why Duke doesn't have the same coach, Mike Pressler.

Former Hofstra coach John Danowksi, who took over for Pressler, has added needed transparency. His team is an open book. Nothing is off limits. "Danowski is night and day," Burness said. "As our president (Richard H. Brodhead) said, `This guy's a mench. This guy gets it.' ''

Even if all charges are dropped against the three players, Burness believes other legal hurdles exist for the university. "We're expecting that there's probably going to be civil suits from folks trying to get money out of us, that comes with the turf."

Burness said there is a segment of the population that has asked him if Duke will apologize to the players if their legal problems disappear. "I said," Burness replied, "for what?"

May he figures he should get his licks in before he gets hauled into court.

Any settlement is going to be between the lax families and the board of regents of Duke. I would assume it owuld involve firing Brodhead and all 88 of the super losers on the faculty, tenure or no. Duke is looking at legal liabilities big enough to shut it down.

They ordered strippers from one agency but they only had one available, Crystal Mangum, so the second stripper, Kim Roberts, came from a second agency. They arrived separately. The purported rape victim CM was dropped off by her “boyfriend” and the second stripper KR drove herself.

No, Kim worked for the stripper agency one of the boys hired. Crystal, the false accuser, worked for and ‘escort’ agency and was sent by Kim’s agency.

With respect, your very same logic has been used for years in regards to cases of campus rape. “The girl should have been smart enough not to go alone to the boy’s room”. You wouldn't buy that old chestnut, would you?

In today’s society, like it or nor, many men patronize strippers. I've been to many a strip joint myself, though I've never hired any. It’s legal, part of the “frat” mentality, and happens every weekend without incident all over the nation. Unfortunately these Duke kids ran into a combination of not only a completely unbalanced woman (and don’t give me the all strippers are psychos routine) and a unethical prosecutor in an era of post modern political correctness where white males are always guilty of any racial crime irrespective of the evidence.

So you’re saying it’s ok because everybody does it?

My point is that here we see a perfect example of what happens when ‘harmless entertainment’ like this is considered acceptable, and why it shouldnt be- even if everyone is doing it.

Just ask them- I bet they wish they had a good old-fashined party instead of a sleeze-fest that weekend.

So much BS and so little time. Have you ever been a member of a fraternity, I have, in the number of terms I was treasurer, I never paid a pole snake for anything. So I don't buy your everybody is doing it BS. Your perversion is your perversion.

Pretty sleazy tagline for a family-friendly forum, don't you think?

Sheesh! She was a prostitute hired to strip. The DNA testing showed she had sperm from 4 different men.

Did she pick this up off a toilet seat???

The party in question started on a Monday and ended on a Tuesday. A statement by her “driver” had her, shall we say, all over town the weekend before.

The fact is, the Duke lacrosse team did nothing illegal. If the woman had more respect for herself, she wouldn’t have been stripping in front of a bunch of drunk college kids. I suppose you never attended a drunken party where some bad behavior took place, while you were in college. College are not always known for displaying the best judgement in regard to their leisure time.

I suppose that you always used the best judgement when you were in college and never did anything that could be construed as irresponsible or childish. It good to know that we have such esteemed posters here on FreeRepublic.

No, something is not okay because everybody is doing it. My daughter knows better than to ever use this argument when I say no. Yes, the party was sleazy. And getting involved with strippers is stupid and can lead to big trouble.

I am sure everyone here agrees that even if these guys were criminals, that in no way excuses Nifong and the stripper's efforts to frame them. Both of them deserve jail time. This not only have innocent persons been put through an enormous ordeal, but it also damaged our trust in the judicial system. There also harms real victims of rape.

I read the entire article, and it takes one’s breath away on so many levels. I can tell you that unless you are willing live at home and commute, you are going to run into some, shall we say, less than acceptable behavior among those with whom you will find yourself engaged. There is no way to escape what has come to fruition from seedlings planted in the 1960s and 1970s.

Some on this post would appear to have received their educations in a monastic order (which I applaud), but if you’re going to go to school anywhere but Liberty University, you are going to be caught up in situations where you have no control over what is happening and have to leave post-haste if you are going to escape without irreparable damage.

The problem in this case is that even escaping an evening gone bad can destroy lives when one makes the right decision and avoids the occasion of sin (and I’m trying to be VERY DIPLOMATIC HERE). To those who feel that these young men received what they deserved, I would humbly suggest and beg that you take this in the kindest way possible, but you need to get out more.

I find it ironic that the "sex, drugs and rock & roll" generation is now running the show and is complaining about the hook-up culture, alcohol consumption and loud parties. I guess they can never trust anyone under 30.

As someone who has three degress from there may I suggest a modification? The real problem at Duke (and many many other universities) are people like Brodhead, Burness, Moneta and the Gang of 88. Cut out the cancer and leave the healthy parts and Duke will be just fine.

It’s actually a line from a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. I happened to be flipping through one of my wife’s C&H collections last week and saw it.

I just moved down here a few months ago (from Richmond) and so far, I have to say, I like the Triangle in general—I live in south Durham in a nice area, convenient, safe, it’s all good so far. But I can surely see the problems that Durham has. They aren’t hard to spot if you know where to look.

I just keep telling myself it could be worse...I could live in the People’s Republic of Chapel Hill. *shudder*
