Duke looks within for solutions

April 9, 2007, 4:21 PM EDT

Whatever the state attorney general says and whenever he says it, do not expect Duke University to give the lacrosse players named in last spring's scandal any commendations from the university.

Reade Seligmann, David Evans and Garden City's Collin Finnerty were indicated on charges of rape, kidnapping and sexual offense after a female dancer claimed she was assaulted at a team party. The rape charge was dropped by District Attorney Mike Nifong, who himself is under investigation for ethics violations. North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper is reviewing the remaining charges. Finnerty has taken classes at Hofstra and volunteers as a coach at Chaminade.

[snip]

A major component in the Duke assessment was coaching. "One of the things we certainly have come to understand in this case is that the coaches in general in each of our sports are responsible for the behavior of their teams," Burness said. That's why Duke doesn't have the same coach, Mike Pressler.

Former Hofstra coach John Danowksi, who took over for Pressler, has added needed transparency. His team is an open book. Nothing is off limits. "Danowski is night and day," Burness said. "As our president (Richard H. Brodhead) said, `This guy's a mench. This guy gets it.' ''

Even if all charges are dropped against the three players, Burness believes other legal hurdles exist for the university. "We're expecting that there's probably going to be civil suits from folks trying to get money out of us, that comes with the turf."

Burness said there is a segment of the population that has asked him if Duke will apologize to the players if their legal problems disappear. "I said," Burness replied, "for what?"

If we’re handing out blame you forgot the following...

1) A woman who lied about rape in order to get out of a jam and has continued to lie for the last year,
2) A crooked DA (a sworn officer of the law) who used the lie to pander to a segment of voters to get himself elected,
3) The people who voted for the crooked DA long after it became clear he was conducting a cold-blooded frameup,
4) The credulous press who repeated the lie without any evidence because it suited their world view,
5) A segment of the Duke faculty and administration who hate their students and used the lie to promote their own social engineering agenda

For you to emphasize one bad decision on the part of the lax team is unconscionable.

I hope that one of your kids ends up doing something stupid or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You will come to know.

I’ve been saying that for a while over at Liestoppers. Graduation at NCCU (where the stripper was enrolled) is May 5. Duke’s graduation is one week later. It’s not by accident that the hearing that was supposed to take place February 5 was put off until May 7 to give the Special Prosecutors “time to investigate”. IMO, count on this not being settled until both schools have let out for the summer.

"You sure have a lot to learn."

Really? about what? Do you think it was wise for them to choose to hire a stripper? Many years ago this kind of behavior was frowned upon.

If the weather is warm in May there will be riots. All those HDTV sets will be liberated from the local Walmart.

Who is their right mind would allow their kids to go to Duke?

Broadhead should be fired. Now.

“If my son were involved he would be pulled out of school until I could teach him a little more about respecting women”

Let’s see. Men have to earn respect but women gain it at birth? No way, Jose. Women have to earn respect as well. It ain’t likely a whore dancer is going to get much from me. Sorry!

It is frowned upon now. It is, AFAIK, not illegal.

But, apparently you have NEVER done anything frowned upon and certainly not ‘stupid’ or, heaven forbid, illegal. I BOW to perfection!

Thanks for the experience.

In fact your kid has probably done any number of stupid things about which you know nothing. Your turn will come.

Thanks; I’ve only been following it here.

I got to wondering, though, when the expected dismissals, “maybe as soon as tomorrow”, didn’t materialize a couple of weeks ago.

After reading this one, my suspicions went up another notch.

Oh well, it only affects rich, privileged white boys, and it IS the seriousness of the charges that matter, since innocence is no defense for so heinous a crime.

They will settle and apologize...

They're going to have to do more than that. The biggest parts of the problem here are the city of Durham and the NC chapter of the NAACP. Duke is going to hve to pay some sort of a very large settlement, take out the trash including Brodhead and the 889 super losers who signed that "listening" letter, and then MOVE. No parent in his right mind would send any kid to ANY school within 30 miles of Durham NC at this point.

Bull shit, who is suppose to be getting the higher education here. Some of the rest of your unproven statements you make as fact are as bad as the clown DA. The stupid childish decision by the players led to the who chain of events.

Really? Tell me which one is untrue. I’ll get you started.

The DA, an adult sworn office of the court, is about to lose his law license for his actions in the matter. Tell me the DA is just peachy. Make your case.

For the benefit of anybody who hasn't stayed on top of this one or figured it out yet, this is what happened:

A bunch of preppy white athletes in a sport which is never going to have money in it and basically serves as a conduit to wall street firms, looked around and saw the major sports teams on campus having parties with strippers, and two or three of the captains figured THEY needed to have a stripper party to keep up the image or some such.

Then they ordered two strippers from an agency which specialized in such and one stripper arrived in a very munged and fubar drug-induced psychotic state, and the preppies did not have the street smarts to recognize or deal with it. The major sports squads which include kids who grew up in cities would have sent both of them packing and demanded a refund from the agency.

Some time after the "performance", the munged dancer was found walking around in circles with no real idea of who she was or where she was or where she came from, was hauled in by cops and was in the process of being sent to the funny farm, literally, when she hit upon the notion of crying "RAPE" as a way out.

The cities psycho DA at that point needed two more years for a pension and was trailing in an election to a woman he had previously fired. He seized upon the "rape" case as a lifeline, and in fact met with black leaders at NCCU in Durham and hatched a plot involving an election for three lynchings of innocent preppy white athletes. He was reelected with 95% of the black vote after the basic realities of the case were well known.

The psycho DA was aided and abbetted by the president and at least 88 super losers amongst the Duke faculty who signed an infamous "listening" letter, who accused the lacrosse players of being rapists in their classrooms, gave them failing grades in courses, invited the "new black panther party" onto campus, presumably to castrate all 50 of the lacrosse players as signs and placards were demanding at the time.

The AG's announcements are now being withhelduntil NC's demmunist leadership echelon figures their black racist wholly-owned voting block has had time to "get over it" or something like that.

One of the three accused kids had decided the party sucked and left and has an absolutely airtight alibi including ATM receipts from the far side of town at the time the non-rape occurred, and STILL gets accused of rape and indicted by a Durham grand jury. The only thing he could have done differently which would have saved him the trouble would be not get born.

There are basically only two good ways to look at a place like Durham NC, i.e. through the rear view mirror for the last time, or through the crosshairs of a Norden bombsight. The really fun part of this story is going to be what happens when the losers who live in and around Durham have to figure out how to run an economy without Duke University in it.

Pretty much on target with a couple of exceptions...

They ordered strippers from one agency but they only had one available, Crystal Mangum, so the second stripper, Kim Roberts, came from a second agency. They arrived separately. The purported rape victim CM was dropped off by her “boyfriend” and the second stripper KR drove herself.

The lax team paid $800 in advance for a 2 hour performance.

After about five minutes of dancing CM “passed out” on the floor. The performance was never finished. The lax team ended up carrying her out to the car and the two strippers drove away together.

The two strippers ended up at a grocery store parking lot where the cops ended up being called and taking CM to Durham Access which is a psych facility and were going to do an involuntary commit. At this point CM cried rape to get herself out of a jam.

The word settle implies money. In addition they will apologize. They might offer a head or two on a pike, but it will be not be faculty members. More likely the idiot Burness quoted in this column [BTW, I wondered elsewhere if he was being set up or is just this dumb?] and the dean of students.

As far as Durham goes, only time will tell if Duke suffers in applications from this. They deserve to, but we shall see.

“there is enpught stupidity in this thing to go around several times, but the fact most in the media keep forgetting is that if they had not made such a sleazy choice of ‘entertainment’ they would not be in this situation to begin with.

If my son were involved he would be pulled out of school until I could teach him a little more about respecting women”

//

Two of those charged may have had nothing to do with hiring strippers and may have left before or during the strip show.

They faced penalties of up to 24 years in prison and continue to amass upwards of seven figures in legal bills, not to mention the damage to their reputations.

Did it ever occur to you that they may have determined it was a bad situation and attempted to do the right thing by leaving? I haven’t see that mentioned in the media.

Looks like they are trying to take the offensive: “We didn’t do anything wrong.”

Yeah, THAT will hold up to scrutiny.

What's Duke's problem with Seligmann? The guy left the party when it was getting going.

Stupid of Burness to slap him in the face.
