Duke looks within for solutions

April 9, 2007, 4:21 PM EDT

Whatever the state attorney general says and whenever he says it, do not expect Duke University to give the lacrosse players named in last spring's scandal any commendations from the university.

Reade Seligmann, David Evans and Garden City's Collin Finnerty were indicated on charges of rape, kidnapping and sexual offense after a female dancer claimed she was assaulted at a team party. The rape charge was dropped by District Attorney Mike Nifong, who himself is under investigation for ethics violations. North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper is reviewing the remaining charges. Finnerty has taken classes at Hofstra and volunteers as a coach at Chaminade.

[snip]

A major component in the Duke assessment was coaching. "One of the things we certainly have come to understand in this case is that the coaches in general in each of our sports are responsible for the behavior of their teams," Burness said. That's why Duke doesn't have the same coach, Mike Pressler.

Former Hofstra coach John Danowksi, who took over for Pressler, has added needed transparency. His team is an open book. Nothing is off limits. "Danowski is night and day," Burness said. "As our president (Richard H. Brodhead) said, `This guy's a mench. This guy gets it.' ''

Even if all charges are dropped against the three players, Burness believes other legal hurdles exist for the university. "We're expecting that there's probably going to be civil suits from folks trying to get money out of us, that comes with the turf."

Burness said there is a segment of the population that has asked him if Duke will apologize to the players if their legal problems disappear. "I said," Burness replied, "for what?"

there is enpught stupidity in this thing to go around several times, but the fact most in the media keep forgetting is that if they had not made such a sleazy choice of ‘entertainment’ they would not be in this situation to begin with.

If my son were involved he would be pulled out of school until I could teach him a little more about respecting women

"...were indicated on charges of rape, kidnapping and sexual offense after a female dancer claimed she was assaulted at a team party."

Let's get this part corrected.

"...were indicted by a stupid Grand Jury who bought into a lying DA Mike Nifong's miscarriage of justice, after a drug-addicted drunk hooker falsely claimed she was assaulted at a team party, following an evening of performing sex acts for cash and having unprotected sexual relations with multiple partners, resulting in DNA of many people other than the Duke players".

There is a certain mother of one of the boys who will have the wise ass administration and faculty at DUKE wishing they had never shown their contempt for “Due Course” and “presumption of innocence”.....

It appears these clowns STILL don’t “get it”....
Duke’s reputation has been horribly damaged and diminished by the revelation of such a dumb ass President and nearly 90 “professors” who signed their obnoxious pre-trial condemnation and participated in slander and discrimination against the 3 charged and the uncharged members of the lacrosse team.

I hope she ends up owning most of that part of North Carolina and all of Duke University....
It would make a nice home for wayward hookers, “exotic dancers” and “NPHs”......according to Imus..

They were “indicated?!” Good Lord, this must be another indication of today’s quality journalism.

Wow! I didn’t even notice their misspelling of indicted. Unreal. (Whew! I’m glad I spelled it correctly!)

Hmm lets see. Perhaps for kicking kids out of school before they had their day in court, for firing their coach before the facts had come out, for having dozens of faculty members attacking the accused students, for disbanding the season, and for not backing up the kids when it became 100% clear that the nappy headed ho was lying.

Somebody needs to tell this guy Burness to shut up.

He is only digging the hole deeper.

If the Duke pooh-bahs had shut up in the first place, they wouldn't be in this fix.

The moral and academic bankruptcy of the English and History departments had already caused us to strike this school off our list for our daughter (and my mom's a Duke alum), but this simply confirmed that our choice was correct and that the rot was more extensive than we knew.

That is the one thing I have never understood, in this day of political correctness, where does someone who is suppose to be smart enough to get a college degree come up with the ideal they can hire nude dancers. Most of them were not old enough to drink.

We're expecting that there's probably going to be civil suits from folks trying to get money out of us, that comes with the turf."

It comes when you try to railroad some innocent, young, white kids simply because of political correctness. It comes when you smear their names, run them out of school, and slander them. It comes when the staff and faculty believed the accuser over the basic facts and even now can't find the moral courage to say "We were wrong" but instead do what all liberals do, avoid responsibility and make excuses.

Duke let their students down, they let the accused down and let the state and the nation down and they still can't say so.

It comes down to doing what's right and Duke, with liberals leading the parade, has failed miserably.

Mixed messages.

On the one hand, there's so much positive publicity and noise in the media about "sexual freedom" etc. and schools, especially "party schools" at best condone this sort of behavior by looking the other way, and at worst actually promote it.

On the other hand, it's a good way to get in trouble quickly.

Even with that said -- and I have minced no words with both my son and my daughter about avoiding compromising situations -- hiring a stripper is not a crime. Stupid, yes, but shouldn't result in a 20-to-life prison term.

The correct attitude would have been to wait until the justice system shook out, then use it as a teaching opportunity for students. Something about how skanky behavior can get you in big trouble and how the sort of people who take their clothes off for money often have other character flaws such as perjuring themselves . . . .

Instead Duke used behavior the university has condoned repeatedly to hang their own students out to dry, probably in an attempt to save the college from the criticisms of the politically correct in the community and on their own faculty.

Don't think much of people "in loco parentis" who think that that title includes selling out the children entrusted to their care . . .

Well, who is the coach of the 88 Professors who signed the libel? When will we see that person go? And who is the Trustee Board chairperson responsible for the behavior of the President? I expect their heads to roll any minute.

That’s the problem with playing a minor sport. You have to pay. If it had been the basketball team, 3/4 of the cheer-leading squad would volunteer to strip for free.

So, is the AG team going to wait until school is out for the summer before dropping all charges, to minimize campus riots, led by Burness & whoever remains of the Group of 88?

Wow the battle lines are now drawn.

where as one administrator said, they are "no choirboys," regardless of the outcome of the legal matters.

I guess these guys will have to sue Duke and settle for cash AND AN APOLOGY. Now possibly the above is a mixed old quote in a current story smearing these kids. But Duke is not about let litigation from these guys go through discovery. They will settle and apologize.
