Nagin: New Orleans aggressive in claims (He wants $77 Billion)
AP ^ | March 3, 2007 | AP

NEW ORLEANS - Only $1 billion of the $77 billion the city is seeking from the Army Corps of Engineers is for infrastructure damages it says it suffered because of levee breaches during Hurricane Katrina. The rest is for such things as the city's tarnished image and tourist industry losses. ADVERTISEMENT

The city "looked at everything and just kind of piled it on," Mayor Ray Nagin said.

"We got some advice from some attorneys to be aggressive with the number, and we'll see what happens," he said.

New Orleans has joined big business and thousands of homeowners in filing claims seeking compensation from the corps for damages sustained when the levees broke during the 2005 storm, flooding 80 percent of the city.

Once you give them anything they will "expect" it for eternity.

NO was living with rats before the storm. They should not get a free ride just because of bad storm combined with an incompetent major they voted for, an incompetent governor they voted for.

Yeah?

Well, you POS, you'd better talk to them lawyers about giving those guns back, or at least coming up with a good story about where they are.

I hope this POS and his stinking Chief of Police go to jail over the gun confiscations.

I work with a herd of Democrats and still I hear conversations about "that George Bush" who still hasn't personally rebuilt every house in New Orleans. Endless complaints about how Bush doesn't care about Katrina, how he sent all the New Orleans money to Iraq when he should have been building housing projects and providing welfare checks, it just goes on and on. Never a word about personal responsibility, insurance problems, that it was a STORM not a Republican project, that there are issues when living below sea level etc. Katrina will be the siren song of the disaffected welfare state until some bigger displacement comes along. That evil Bush!

I say just let the great pool of 'Skilled Engineers' that live in New Orleans build the stuff and be grateful for the great work that will be done.

Afterwards just dont call FEMA, Bush or anyone in the Federal Govt when you get your collective asses kicked by nature again.

They tried selling one of the busses on eBay.

Their first effort netted almost $ 7k in bids and then they had to restart the auction due to bizarre legal requirements.

The second one netted almost $4k, below the reserve, so I'm not sure what happened to the bus or if they ever managed to sell it.

I really liked the guy selling the bus. He was pummelled with questions and answers, including someone who proposed to use it as a submarine. His reply, if I recall correctly, is that he thought it would be able to submerge, but wasn't sure about the other part!

I wonder what the salvage value of one of those things would have been. Anyone know?

D

The remnants of the auction (pictures and Q&A long since taken down, alas)

Was it identified as a flooded vehicle? I think if a vehicle is flooded like that it doesn't have much salvage value. Hmmm...it seems to me there was some fraud after Hurricane Andrew or maybe it was the flood of '95? when people and businesses were trying to launder flooded vehicles.

Give him what San Francisco and Chicago got after their disasters. Nothing. If its worth living there people will build it again. If not, time to pull the life support and let it go.

It will be an interesting legal case. The levies that broke, if my understanding is not flawed, were not actually built by the Corps. The money went to the local government and the levies were built below the specifications of the Corps with the difference being pocketed by Brother in Law Tommie or Uncle Fred.

"The Big Easy" come, easy go. It doesn't come easy at all, and goes way too damn fast for the hard working tax payers whom Nagin and his free loading supporters seek to screw......rape, again and again and again.
