NEW ORLEANS - Only $1 billion of the $77 billion the city is seeking from the Army Corps of Engineers is for infrastructure damages it says it suffered because of levee breaches during Hurricane Katrina. The rest is for such things as the city's tarnished image and tourist industry losses. ADVERTISEMENT
The city "looked at everything and just kind of piled it on," Mayor Ray Nagin said.
"We got some advice from some attorneys to be aggressive with the number, and we'll see what happens," he said.
New Orleans has joined big business and thousands of homeowners in filing claims seeking compensation from the corps for damages sustained when the levees broke during the 2005 storm, flooding 80 percent of the city.

Oh boy.
That's quite a leader right there, yessiree. He must've picked up that nugget watching the Today show or something.
So are we supposed to spend $77 billion every couple of years because the French (being the French) built a city below sea level and its inhabitants rely on government too much? I don't think so.
How much money has the rest of the Gulf Coast demanded and received?
How about he takes responsibility for New Orleans? The mayor that did nothing.
Hey Ray, what did you do with all those school buses that came underwater because you refused to use them to evacuate the people? Were they sold at a garage sale?
I wonder how much of that will end up in his personal bank account......
Keep the port and the French Quarter and let the river have the rest.
the savage will try to steal as much of it as he can.
It's a wonder to me that between August '05 and now, that guy hasn't been (a) indicted or (b) whacked.
'School Bus' Nagin better bust a move before the next one hits...
In 1871 a fire nearly destroyed the entire city of Chicago, yet, the city rebuilt itself with virtually no government assistance. The mayor of Chicago put a nonprofit agency, the Chicago Relief and Aid Society, in charge of accepting and distributing the charitable contributions that poured in from all around the country. The police maintained order and attempted to keep looting to a minimum. But this was about the extent of the government's role.
Just two weeks after the fire, O. C. Gibbs of the Chicago Relief and Aid Society issued a circular to all Society personnel. The contents of that memo are worth quoting at length:
"Every carpenter or mason can now earn from three to four dollars per day, every laborer two dollars, every half-grown boy one dollar, every woman capable of doing household work from two to three dollars per week and her board ... Clerks, and persons unaccustomed to outdoor labor, if they cannot find such employment as they have been accustomed to, must take such as if offered or leave the city. Any man, single woman, or boy, able to work and unemployed at this time, is so from choice and not necessity..."Give no aid to any families who are capable of earning their own support, if fully employed...
"No aid should be rendered to persons possessed of property, either personal or real, from which they might, by reasonable exertions, procure the means to supply their wants, nor to those who have friends able to help them."
I've always said that NOLA should have been declared a tax-exempt zone for five years and private investors would have rebuilt that city in no time.
I wonder what percentage of a billion dollars actually gets where it's intended, the rest ending up in freezers and numbered Swiss bank accounts.
I bet he wants to buy NEW SCHOOL BUSES !!!
I think they prefer freezers to banks.
mc :-)
Here we go again REWARDING INCOMPETANCY, He is a bumbling failure as well as the Govenor, Many lives could have been saved if he and she would have put the weather channel on!!!! They dropped the ball and all we hear is its Bushes fault, I will agree the federal governments response was slow but they were the first responders and they sat back and did nothing!!!! We all saw they lines of school buses in the parking lot under water after the storm, Shameful simply shameful, This arrogant SOB should be brought to justice for failure to act as a human being.
He has to lure back in all that chocolate.
Hey Nagin, the "chocolate" factory has been moved to mexico. Try there.
Let us know how it works out.
