:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Senior Taliban leader held in Pakistan
-Full Story-

Pakistani security forces have captured a high-ranking Taliban leader in the southwestern city of Quetta, a senior security official and Taliban sources said late Thursday

The capture of Mullah Obaidullah Akhund marked the first Pakistan arrest of a senior leader of the Islamist militia since it was driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001 when thousands of its fighters fled into Pakistan.

The security official and Taliban sources said Akhund, the third most senior member of the Taliban's 10-member leadership council, was arrested late on Monday, hours after a surprise visit to Pakistan by U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney.

I've been waiting to hear an update on this situation too! Fox hasn't said anything more since they first reported on it. All I can find on the net is this:

31 Elementary students taken to the hospital

BELOIT -- Trouble started around 10:30 when twelve students in one fourth grade classroom at Beloit Elementary complained of a rash that had suddenly appeared on their bodies. Shortly thereafter, 19 other students in adjacent classrooms complained of symptoms including throat irritation. Those students were also taken to a hospital in Alliance to be treated.

The source of the chemical remains unknown. The Mahoning County Health Deparment is investigating.

Not much more at the link other than I found it interesting that the only mention of a chemical was the one brief line at the end.

..waiting on more info!

Still can't find much about this other than another article that pretty much states the same info from the first one I posted. It does have a bit more though:

http://www.newsnet5.com/news/11262062/detail.html

Rash Outbreak Sends 32 Students To Hospital
snip:
According to WYTV-TV, about a dozen children initially complained of rashes on different parts of their bodies, and more complained throughout the morning.

As of now, 32 children have been taken to Alliance City Hospital, some complaining of swallowing issues as well.

The school superintendent said the school has enacted its mass casualty plan and health department officials are on their way.

The superintendent said that children who are not sick are remaining at school for now.
end snip

So they have enacted a mass casualty plan but are keeping the other children at the school. Things that make you go hmmmm..

That is so strange. Unless they are keeping the other children as a form of isolation until they find out the
cause. However, on the flip side it could make alot more
kids sick.

You are right about this being strange. Fox hasn't said a word about this since we heard the initial report. Not having any luck finding any updated info on the web either.

I have to leave for a while so hopefully we'll learn that it was something very minor and all the children are just fine!

Will check back in later to see if there's more info : )

Germans Arrested In Pakistan; Flirting with Jihad?
March 14, 2007

Pakistani intelligence agents have arrested two men from Germany near the border with Afghanistan -- they are suspected of having contact with Islamic terrorists. Berlin is trying to gain access to the prisoners, and is hoping to avoid a replay of the Kurnaz case.

Militant Islamists are thought to have camps in the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Now two men from Germany have been arrested there, accused of having contact with the militants. For most foreign visitors, the road to Waziristan ends less than 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of Lahore, at a Pakistan military checkpoint. Beyond the checkpoint begins a journey through a mountainous no man's land dotted with small villages, past houses surrounded by high walls. Gun barrels jut from many a pickup truck with tinted windows. Getting out of the car here is not such a good idea.

Intelligence agencies are intensely interested in what goes on in the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan. No other area is mentioned more frequently in discussions of where exactly Osama bin Laden's hideout may be located. Pakistani intelligence agents estimate the number of terrorists in the region to be above 2,000, with most thought to come from Uzbekistan and Arab countries. "Not the right place to study the Koran," in the opinion of Ernst Uhrlau, the president of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND). His agency characterizes the region as "al-Qaida's deployment zone."

In the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan, it's not difficult to spot a European -- even when they're dressed in traditional garb like the two German men that showed up in northern Pakistan early this year. Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan's intelligence agency, seized 29-year-old Nihad C. from Pforzheim, Germany, in Rawalpindi. Three days later an acquaintance of his, 30-year-old Michael N. from Oberhausen, was arrested in Raiwind.

Iran to appeal Interpol arrest request
March 15, 2007

PARIS - Iran will appeal Interpol's request for the arrest of five prominent Iranians and a Lebanese militant wanted in connection with Argentina's worst terror attack, an Iranian official said Thursday. Argentina is seeking the six in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires. Eighty-five people were killed and 200 were wounded when a van pulled up outside the seven-story building and exploded.

SNIP:The six people targeted with red notices are former Iranian intelligence chief Ali Fallahian; Mohsen Rabbani, former cultural attache at the Iranian Embassy in Buenos Aires; former diplomat Ahmad Reza Asghari; Mohsen Rezaei, former leader of the elite Revolutionary Guards; Ahmad Vahidi, a general in the Revolutionary Guards; and Hezbollah militant Imad Moughnieh, one of the world's most sought-after terror suspects.

Morocco Says W. Sahara Infiltrated By Al Qaida
3/15/07

CAIRO -- Morocco has asserted that Al Qaida infiltrated the disputed Western Sahara region. A Moroccan intelligence report said Al Qaida has sent operatives into Western Sahara over the last few months. The report said Al Qaida has established a presence in the mineral-rich territory where a low-intensity war has been waged by the Algerian-backed Polisario Front.

"The report has been relayed to the United States and other Western allies of Morocco," an Arab diplomatic source said. "The report says Al Qaida has exploited the lack of rule in Western Sahara for training and other operations."

On Tuesday, Moroccan newspapers said a suicide bomber who blew himself up in an Internet cafe in Casablanca was part of a network of attackers that planned to detonate their explosive belts throughout the city. The newspapers said the network was comprised of five Moroccan suicide bombers ordered to target Casablanca's police and paramilitary headquarters, restaurants and hotels.

Body of Missing Ga. Boy Found (GA - 3/15/07)

4 in custody are considered 'suspects'

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — A 6-year-old boy who vanished a week ago while playing near his trailer-park home was found slain Thursday after a registered sex offender and three other suspects stymied investigators for days with conflicting stories of the youngster's fate....

I know that this if off topic...but I have been praying for this 6 year-old to be found alive...just another heartbreaking ending. Prayers for his family and all those who were praying and helping to look for Christopher. There is no just punishment for these vile demons who took this child's life. There is no forgiveness for such horrific brutality against these innocent children. Each time I hear of these cases...it makes me wonder if there are more horrific cases like this now....or have these types of crimes happened throughout time....and we just now have access to information and are saturated with news from across the globe.

Also off topic...I have been so busy with work that I have not even had the chance to lurk...and I am sure that I am thousands of posts behind. I am hoping that all TM'ers are doing well...and I am sure that they are keeping up their usual great work. And if anyone knows someone in the PA/NJ/DE area who knows AutoCAD...and is looking for an entry level position...please freepmail me. I have been looking to hire someone...and have not so far received any stellar resume's. Blessing to all TM'ers!

IED emplacers killed in Mosul
Multi-National Division – North PAO

MOSUL, Iraq – Coalition force members engaged and killed anti-Iraqi forces who were in the act of emplacing an improvised explosive device Monday.

Coalition force members observed two males digging a hole, placing munitions in the hole, and laying wire next to a main road in southeast Mosul.

Coalition helicopters immediately responded and engaged the emplacers with rocket fire. Both AIF were killed before they could detonate their roadside bomb. There were no friendly casualties or damage sustained.

This is the second incident in four days where AIF were caught or killed in the act of employing a roadside bomb against the Iraqi Security Forces, Coalition troops, and the innocent civilians of Mosul.

Coalition Forces Kill Terrorists; IED Blast Wounds Civilians

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 15, 2007 – Coalition forces killed four terrorists and detained 11 suspected terrorists during raids over the past several days targeting al Qaeda networks in Iraq, military officials reported.

Two armed terrorists began firing on coalition forces this morning east of Balad, officials said. Precision fire from a coalition aircraft killed both terrorists. Forces also detained eight suspected terrorists during the raid.

Elsewhere in Iraq today, an insurgent vehicle bomb struck a bus full of workers at a bus factory.

Iraqi police and soldiers of the 8th Iraqi Army Division reacted quickly to the attack, immediately securing the area and evacuating the casualties to the hospital, officials said. Iraqi officials report that five workers were killed and 22 were wounded.

Soldiers detained three suspected terrorists with alleged ties to al Qaeda suicide-bombing operations in Mosul during a raid yesterday evening.

In another incident, 10th Mountain Division soldiers followed a tip from an Iraqi civilian that led to the arrest of a suspected roadside bomber yesterday.

While searching the house believed to be the insurgent’s hideout, soldiers found eight local nationals. One was arrested, and the others are being held for further questioning, officials said.

Also, coalition forces engaged and killed terrorists who were planting roadside bombs in Mosul on March 12.

Soldiers saw two men digging a hole, placing munitions and laying wire next to a main road, officials reported. Coalition helicopters immediately responded, engaging the terrorists with rocket fire. Both suspects were killed before they could detonate the bomb.

It was the second incident in four days in which terrorists were caught or killed in the act of placing roadside bombs, officials said.

Coalition Troops Support Afghan Forces in Arrests, Operations

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 15, 2007 – Coalition and Afghan forces arrested four people this morning during an operation targeting a known terrorist safe house, military officials reported.

The combined force arrested four military-age men with suspected ties to extremist groups believed to be involved in facilitating the movement of anti-government fighters. Official said some were discovered with large amounts of ammunition and currency.

Afghan forces, escorted by the local imam, questioned some men who had recently arrived from Pakistan and were staying in the local mosque. Coalition forces remained outside the mosque during the operation.

No shots were fired during the operation, military officials said, and no damage or injuries were reported by civilians or by the combined force.

In other news from Afghanistan, Afghan forces, supported by coalition troops, recovered high-powered sniper rifles and killed at least two terrorists during an operation March 12. The operation targeted a known Taliban weapons facilitator, officials said.

The terrorist suspects fired at the combined force from within the compound, where the sniper rifles were found.

The buildings were destroyed when the terrorists continued engaging the Afghan and coalition forces.

Credible information led the combined force to the compound in connection with the weapons trafficker, who has been linked to the movement of anti-aircraft weapons in southern Afghanistan, officials said.

Officials added that the area has seen numerous direct and indirect fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in recent weeks.

Two Afghan soldiers and a coalition soldier were injured during the assault. The three suffered non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. No civilian casualties were reported.

Officials also announced that Combined Joint Task Force 76 has been officially redesignated as Combined Joint Task Force 82. This redesignation reflects changes in command relationships resulting from the transfer of Afghanistan operations to NATO’s International Security and Assistance Force and the inactivation of Combined Forces Command Afghanistan.

U.S. Military Program Targets Terrorism in North Africa

By Gerry J. Gilmore
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 15, 2007 – The United States is keeping a watchful eye on developments in North Africa to ensure terrorists don’t gain a foothold there, a senior U.S. military officer said in remarks provided to the U.S. House Armed Services Committee at a hearing here today.

The Defense Department is participating in the U.S. State Department’s Trans-Sahara Counter Terrorism Partnership, Army Gen. Bantz J. Craddock stated, because of concern that Islamic terrorist organizations like al Qaeda may use ungoverned areas of North Africa to gain new recruits and train for future attacks.

Craddock is chief of U.S. European Command. Headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, the command is responsible for large swaths of Africa, as well as Europe. African nations that now fall under EUCOM’s purview will be transferred to the new U.S. Africa Command that’s scheduled to stand up Oct. 1.

“Like all combatant commands, EUCOM is dealing with terrorism in all its forms,” Craddock stated.

In northern Africa, “al Qaeda-affiliated groups exploit ungoverned spaces to gain sanctuary, recruit, indoctrinate, train, equip, transit and mount operations,” Craddock said. “The Trans-Sahara region, in particular, offers sanctuary to Islamic extremist terrorists, smugglers of drugs and contraband and insurgent groups.”

There’s evidence that al Qaeda has stepped up recruitment of North Africans to carry out attacks against U.S., coalition and pro-Iraqi government forces in Iraq, the general said.

The DoD-State Department initiative in North Africa “strengthens regional counterterrorism capabilities and assists participating nations in halting the illegal flow of arms, goods and people through the region,” Craddock said. He noted that Algeria, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, Nigeria and Tunisia are participating in the initiative.

The U.S. military contribution to TSCTP is called Operation Enduring Freedom Trans-Sahara, Craddock said.

“The military component (of TSCTP) utilizes special operations forces to train partners on the conduct of counter-terrorism operations,” he explained. The program also helps participants get better control of their territory and prevents terrorist groups from using large, open areas as safe havens.

Globalization and modern communications systems enable terrorists to establish networks anywhere in the world, Craddock pointed out, noting, “the damage individual states or groups within those states can do is unprecedented.”

However, the DoD-State Department anti-terror program in North Africa has the potential to produce significant results, and at modest cost, Craddock said.

“It can be a powerful brake on future terrorist expansion,” he said.
