:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Senior Taliban leader held in Pakistan
-Full Story-

Pakistani security forces have captured a high-ranking Taliban leader in the southwestern city of Quetta, a senior security official and Taliban sources said late Thursday

The capture of Mullah Obaidullah Akhund marked the first Pakistan arrest of a senior leader of the Islamist militia since it was driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001 when thousands of its fighters fled into Pakistan.

The security official and Taliban sources said Akhund, the third most senior member of the Taliban's 10-member leadership council, was arrested late on Monday, hours after a surprise visit to Pakistan by U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney.

"UN agreement over Iran sanctions"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Diplomats at the UN have reached agreement in principle on a package of new sanctions against Iran, following its refusal to stop enriching uranium.

The draft resolution is expected to be presented to the Security Council for discussion on Thursday.

The sanctions may include a ban on the export of arms from Iran, and a freeze on the assets of key Iranian officials.

Iran says its nuclear programme is peaceful, but Western governments suspect Iran of wanting a nuclear bomb.

Ambassadors from Britain, France, the United States, China and Russia - the five permanent members of the Security Council - and Germany agreed the draft resolution in principle.

The governments must now approve the text before it is presented to the full Security Council, likely on Thursday."

"Hamas says it still seeks Israel's destruction"

SNIPPET: "Only the most foolish and those who most wanted to be fooled ever believed otherwise. "We will not betray promises we made to God..." says the Hamas statement -- yet some persist in believing that Hamas will negotiate away these sworn principles.

"Hamas says still seeks Israel's destruction," by Nidal al-Mughrabi for Reuters, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:

GAZA (Reuters) - The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas rejected on Monday criticism by al Qaeda's second-in-command and said it was still committed to Israel's destruction despite a power-sharing deal with the Fatah faction.

"We will not betray promises we made to God to continue the path of Jihad and resistance until the liberation of Palestine, all of Palestine," Hamas said in a statement, in a clear reference to Israel as well as to the occupied West Bank."

Re #840

I never fail to get chills even after watching documentary like this numerous times. Shock value never wears out much.

One of the worst evils of our time. The worst not on sheer numeric scale of Stalin and Mao, but on the sheer intensity and persistence of brutality.

father/son duo secured their place in history.

I understand.

Shocking is an understatement, but I lack the correct verbiage to express my feelings.

Saddam deputy loses final appeal

Former Iraqi Vice-President Taha Yassin Ramadan has lost his appeal against a death sentence for killing Shia Muslims in the 1980s.
Ramadan was sentenced to hang after an appeal by the Iraqi High Tribunal, which previously jailed him for life.

He was tried alongside former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein over the killing of 148 Shias in the village of Dujail.

Under Iraqi law he must follow Saddam Hussein to the gallows within 30 days of the appeals process being exhausted.

"Girl, 15, begs to return to homeschooling parents"
WorldNetDaily.com ^ | March 15, 2007 | Bob Unruh

Posted on 03/15/2007 2:10:19 AM PDT by Man50D

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A teenager taken from her home and parents by German police officers and institionalized in a psychiatric ward for homeschooling is pleading with the international community for help so she can return home.

"I want to ask you for help, to get my right to go back to my family, as I wish," Melissa Busekros wrote in an English letter hand-delivered to the International Human Rights Group, whose lawyers have been working on her case.

More than six weeks ago she was taken "with more than 15 police men" from her home to a psychiatric hospital in Nuremberg, she wrote, and about a month she was placed in a foster home.

"I am not sick as the doctor said and my family is the best place for me to live," she said her letter.

WND reported earlier this week a German appeals court affirmed the lower court's decision to remove the 15-year-old from her home and keep her in foster care, despite a lower court's proposal accepted by the parents for her to return home under state supervision.

Part of the appeals court ruling included a requirement for her parents, Hubert and Gudrun Busekros, to also be given state-sponsored psychiatric tests, and Joel Thornton, president of the IHRG said there was a high concern that the government will use those tests to remove the other five children from the family.

There also is the fear "Melissa will be returned to the psychiatric clinic system in Germany and 'disappear.' This would leave the family with no way to know where Melissa is or how she is doing. She could become a ward of the state and completely lost to her family," Thornton said.

"The trouble is this emboldens the state again, only now it's at a higher level, and the courts still are agreeing with them. This could put Melissa back into the psychiatric system where she could disappear from sight entirely," Thornton told WND.

The appeals court ruling came despite the fact that all three of the lawyers representing Melissa told the higher court the family had accepted a compromise offered by a lower court for her to return home under government supervision.

"In spite of [that] … the appeals court held that the family refused the court's initial compromise to let Melissa become an outpatient," Thornton said.

Thornton also suggested that the case even could end up extending its impact beyond the Busekros family.

"There is an increased fear among homeschoolers about whether their children are next," he said.

Even those German families who already have fled to other countries because of Germany's homeschool ban are moving into hiding because of the possibility they could be returned to face German fines or jail time for homeschooling, he said."

Al Qaeda Chief Khalid Sheikh Mohammed Confesses to Planning Sept. 11, Gitmo Transcript Shows

Thursday , March 15, 2007

AP

WASHINGTON —
"Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's confirmed his place in history as Al Qaeda's most ambitious operational planner when he confessed in a U.S. military tribunal to planning and supporting 31 terrorist attacks, topped by 9/11, that killed thousands of innocent victims since the early 1990s.

The gruesome attacks range from the suicide hijackings of Sept. 11, 2001 — which killed nearly 3,000 — to a 2002 shooting on an island off Kuwait that killed a U.S. Marine.

Many plots, including a previously undisclosed plan to kill several former U.S. presidents, were never carried out or were foiled by international counterterror authorities.

"I was responsible for the 9/11 operation from A to Z," Mohammed said in a statement read Saturday during a Combatant Status Review Tribunal at the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Mohammed's confession was read by a member of the U.S. military who is serving as his personal representative.

The Pentagon released a 26-page transcript of the closed-door proceedings on Wednesday night. Some material was omitted, and it wasn't possible to immediately confirm details. Some elements of it refer to locations for which the United States and other nations have issued terrorism warnings based on what they deemed credible threats from 1993 to the present.

Mohammed, known as KSM among government officials, was last seen haggard after his capture in March 2003, when he was photographed in a dingy white T-shirt with an over-stretched neck. He disappeared for more than three years into a secret detention system run by the CIA.

• PHOTO ESSAY: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed 's Legacy of Terror

In his first public statements since his capture, his radical ideology and self-confidence came through. He expressed regret for taking the lives of children and said Islam doesn't give a "green light" to killing.

Yet he finds room for exceptions. "The language of the war is victims," he said.

In laying out his role in 31 attacks, his words drew Al Qaeda closer to plots of the early 1990s than the group has previously been linked, including the 1993 World Trade Center truck bombing in which six people died.

Six people with links to global terror networks were convicted in federal court and sentenced to life in prison for that attack.

Mohammed made clear that Al Qaeda wanted to down a second trans-Atlantic aircraft during would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid's operation.

And he confessed to the beheading of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in a section of the statement that was excised from the public document, The Associated Press has learned. Pearl was abducted in January 2002 in Pakistan while researching a story on Islamic militancy. Mohammed has long been a suspect in the slaying, which was captured on video."

He has been one busy boy, as I said earlier, off with his head.
