I'm 90 miles from Cuba and I'm going to purchase a new handgun for a new house.
I'm thinking .45 ... Kimber
I'm open to all opinion and option.
I'm still holding out the thought of a revolver over an automatic for ease of maintenance in the subtropics
These threads are always informative and I would appreaciate your input before I make a final decision.

Glock 17 or 19. For ease of maintenance and corrosion resistance I'm not sure you'll find a better deal than a Glock.
Can't get much better than that.
Also, the reason I said the G17 or G19 is because with the price of ammo shooting thru the roof the 9mm would be my minimum caliber and it's the most cost effective.
226 isn't offered in a .45 caliber. Just the 9mm, .357Sig and the .40S&W (of which the .40 and the .357 barrels are interchangable).
Personally, I prefer .40S&W, but I plan on buying the .357Sig barrels for my SigPro 2022 and my Glock 27.
One additional thought. There's been a lot of contention on this thread about a handgun vs. a shotgun for home defense. I come down somewhere in the middle. I sleep with both nearby. If I (or my wife) hear a noise downstairs in the middle of the night, I'll investigate with a handgun. However if someone is kicking on my door and I have time I'll be carrying the Mossberg. As someone stated way up thread, there's nothing quite like the sound of racking a pump shotgun. It would stop anyone but a lunatic before they got through the door. If he is a lunatic, then that's what the double-ought buck is for.

My personal set up is a Sig 226 in 9mm with the *right* ammo and six mags. There is a Franchi Law 12 with buckshot and a butt bandoleer handy. I did have a Mossy 835.
The rifle has gone through several swaps. Right now it's a Norinco hunter with 40 round Bulgarian waffle mags (without a mag it looks like any other hunting rifle). I think I'll end up with a folding stock AK in .223 or a Krink in 7.62 or 5.45... after I get them built.

I need to look, its an old European style stainless 45 Sig. I bought it back in the 80's. It may be a P220.The mag release is at the bottom it took awhile to get used to but feels very natural now.
I need to go out and fire it anyway, it's my primary house weapon and I haven't shot it in about 2 years.
As far as I recall I think the only Sig .45's are the 220's, 245's and the Mauser M2's. Excluding their line if 1911 style pistols of course.
I have been know to be wrong though :D
I'm curious to know what model you have, if you remember please post up the model #. :)
I carry my G27 at all times. I plan on picking up two more mags and add a front night sight. The SigPro will become the home defense pistol since I want to add a light to it. The Pro came standard with night sights.
I want to get a RRA AR-style rifle but I have to smooze the wife for a year or so to be able to pull that one off
I'm one or the moderators (H&K91/G3/CETME) over at www.gunsnet.net and would invite you over. I'm more into the H&K and AK stle rifles but there is a very active set of AR forums over there. You might just want to build you own like I'm doing with the AKs...

I usually hang around over at sigforum.com. I've learned quite a bit just from reading and asking questions over there.
I live in a rural area, where we recently lost power for 2 weeks. My AK was beside me at night as well. But many legal complications there if you are forced to defend yourself with such a weapon. Around here, fine. Not sure about FL.
Lastly some have mentioned the H&K USP .45. Another excellent weapon. Can't go wrong there. But you really need to be skilled in shooting before making such a move. Hence my suggestion for .357. However, if interested, rent the movie COLLATERAL with Tom Cruise. Forget the movie-watch the trailer. Cruise taught to fire USP by SAS. Interesting.
I think you are right, it is a 220. See my post above. It is an older model that has the european magazine drop. As far as that goes, I'm not sure it is stainless. I have a half dozen 45's and haven't played with them in awhile.
If I could figure out how to post a picture, I'd show you the gun. It is a little ugly, I broke the grip playing on a police officer course and could only find American style grips which require some crude adjustments.

One of the full size ones. If you want small, go with the revolvers others have mentioned.
