I'm here in the Dayton, OH area. We are going through a blast of "dangerous" cold. Today 8 degree expected high, with wind chill of -10 to -15. Otherwise sunny.
I've got the radio on and I'm stunned the number of school closings! (Not to mention the slightly smaller number of "2 hour delays".)
Do you folks have this no-school-today-because-its-too-cold?
I think a lot of the Madison area schools (Madison, Hanover, etc) are on a delay this morning, but since I didn't have to get my oldest up this morning at her normal time, I don't know!
Hey, I'll be passing through Columbus in less than two weeks to go to Indy (birthday party). I grew up on the southside of Indianapolis, and my folks live out in Morgan County.

Here in central PA we have a 2 hour delay. Mostly because of problems related to getting buses started and buildings heated on a Monday.
Winds are calm now, but they are expecting wind chills of 20-30 below.
My school cancel grammer on account of cold.
A whole mess of counties here in North Central WV are closed and a few have 2hr delays. We haven't had many 'snow days' here yet and since they are built into the schedule anyway...
At 8:35 AM it is 0 degrees here but not much wind until the sun gets a little higher.

Around here, Massachusetts, allot of schools generally lower their heat over the weekend to save money, so whenever there is a delay or closing because of extremely cold temperatures, it usually happens on a Monday.

I bet it has to do with block heaters. No block heaters, busses are a pain to start. No starting school busses, no picking up kids. Minnesota would likely have block heaters, Ohio wouldn't. My family is from Thunder Bay, Ontario, so I'm familiar with low temp procedures. Never, ever closed a school for cold weather in my memory.

I'm going to pass on the too-easy cheap shot. Once a year, I do something nice.
I agree with you that it is downright silly to close school on account of cold. Just bundle up the kiddies and send them off. If they're not at school, they'll be playing outside anyway.
Besides, eight degrees is not cold. Jacket weather, sure. But that's not really cold.
A district near me (New York, perhaps) had "Energy Conservation" days a while back, where they would close schools to save on heating bills when it got too cold. The net result, of course, is that hundreds of thousands of apartments throughout the city were kept heated all day as parents stayed home with their children. You can bet that no energy was saved.
At the end of the day, it's just another day off for the teacher's union. They probably have negotiated a certain number of snow days, and you haven't had enough snow yet.

We all have great memories of our youth.While I don't beleieve we had closings any more or less than now, one thing we didn't have were make-up days.Because, since the education system hadn't begun to fail totally yet, we didn't have the minimum days for a school year laws.Which are more feel-good bs.
