The Denver Post ^ | January 1, 2007 | Bill Williamson

Posted on 01/01/2007 4:34:43 AM PST by goarmy

Broncos right cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed this morning. After leaving a nightclub in a limousine, Williams was shot and killed near 11th and Grant in Denver. The team confirmed the death of Williams. A female passenger also was shot, according to a source familiar with Williams.

Williams was 24.

"I learned from the Denver Police Deprtment that this incident has occured," Williams' agent, Jeff Griffin said early Monday morning. "No other details have been released. I sincerely offer my condolences and feelings to his family."

Williams was the Broncos' starting right cornerback and played his final game for the team in a 26-23 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers that eliminated Denver from the playoffs on New Year's Eve.

Denver PD press conference in progress right now. Police are looking for a Tahoe or a similar vehicle.

Cop says there was an argument and there are witnesses who saw the confontation prior to the shooting.

But even when you add them all up it's less than a dozen players, which is really a pretty insignificant percentage of the league as a whole. Part of the problem is the press loves bad news, reporting on the over 1700 people that have been NFL starters last year without getting in trouble with the law just doesn't interest the press.

I arrived home from work at 2:15am Saturday morning two weeks ago. I worked a 22 hour day.
What did I do wrong?
Am I a pimp, whore, thief or a man who works hard at an honest job to support his family?

There's "being out late" and there's "being out late". Did you stop and party at a club at the end of your shift?

The original poster you responded to did come on strong, but you know he was not referring to people working a graveyard shift.

It's time to withdraw all our brave police officers from Denver, South Central LA, Philadelphia, and Detroit. Those areas are much too dangerous as we can see from this tragic event. We'll just lose many more brave policemen in those cities. It's time to pull out of those cities. They're a lost cause. Our policies in inner-city America have failed and it's time to pull our forces out of there and get out of the way of this senseless urban warfare. (/satire off.)

Sans-Culotte -

There are a few of us who actually party late into nights on weekends. There have been all-night parties among my circle of friends, most of whom are professionals in fairly senior positions/business owners.

By partying late, I wonder which class of folks we fall under - prostitues, pimps or thieves? /mega sarc

Last time I checked, going to a club and partying late into the night was not a crime.

Perhaps, but it could also be someone shooting him mainly because of envy. I remember when one of the top Chargers players said, "some people on the street envy our success in pro football, and they're always trying to take us down. I have to be very careful about how I deal with people now."

I don't work "shifts". I work until the job is done. Do the math, if I arrived home at 2:15am what time did I go to work making a 22 hour day? If one cannot be out past midnight what is the allowed time to go out in the morning?

Further, if there had been a gin joint open I would have taken the whole crew out for a beer. I do what I want when I want and it is not based on what somebody's mommy told them years ago that is neither accurate or bright.

The rest of you can fear the night but I do not. Unfortunately I am too old to enjoy being out late anymore.

Partying until the wee hours of the morning is not a crime, and neither is market timing in the stock market. I can remember leaving a few poker games in college just as the sun was rising, and those poker games started after keg parties that went until 1 am....(!)

Cheers!

I absolutely agree. Going to a business at any given time they are open is not illegal or ethically wrong. I strongly disagree with people making the implication that it is partially someone's fault for being shot because they are celebrating the end of a work season.

I do not know if Williams and they other people in the vehicle did anything illegal or unethical, but they did not do anything wrong by deciding to go out late at night, especially in a generally peacefull state.

"This is so wrong. A person should be able to go out on New Year's eve in any city downtown and not be shot/assaulted or harmed. Mr. Williams was in a vehicle and minding his own business. That's just what all of us should be able to do in a civil society.

Exactly. We can only imagine the mentality that thinks they can spray down a limousine with a semi-automatic gun. With the tinted windows on these limousines, this act was not directed at a singular individual. Behind tinted limousine glass, there is no target. This was the taking of innocent life in a random attack at anyone that is hit by the bullets. This is the classic class envy that exists between those who live civilly following the laws and those who live uncivilly by breaking the laws.

Huh, I didn't realize he was an O-Aggie--and a Texan, to boot. My condolences.

The AP story did say the group had had a confrontation at the club with another group. Still, it's hard to imagine going clubbing after getting a shoulder injury during the game. He said he would talk about surgery on it in a couple of weeks.

Also hard to comprehend 16 people in that Hummer stretch limo and a spray of 12 bullets found having hit the car - and *only* three people wounded, one killed. They shot into the driver's window - he must not have been hit or hurt badly if the car didn't crash. The story said the limo's sitting in a snowbank right now, being investigated.

Very sad that he was the one killed.

Nah, they had a dust-up with others at the club. It wasn't random, but it doesn't seem that Darrent was specifically targeted, either.

He just may have been sitting in the wrong place in the limo. (Not that a group could hide anywhere in a white Hummer stretch limo! In the snow, no less.)

So now you are insulted because I used the term graveyard shift? Lighten up, dude, and stop taking every remark so personally. I'm sure you probably own the company and had to work late because tou are dedicated, and no one else cared to work 22 hours like you did.

Also, it's not "wrong" or "illegal" to go partying at night. It's just not always the bright thing to do. Do you leave your door unlocked at night, or do you surrender to fear and lock it? It's a shame the gangstas are ruining late-night partying for many. Maybe the clubs that are "safer" are not as much fun? I used to stay out late as well in my younger days. But there were relatively safe places one could go 20 years ago. And school used to be a safe place for kids. That was then; this is now.

Seven sacks in one game? That's gotta be wrong especially for a CB, I gotta look that up.
