Don't forget the scissors to puncture the brain Constitutional right. I'd hate for anyone to lose their right to barbarian baby killing. /sarc off
Why not? Open the window. Most smokers always have the window cracked to vent the smoke.
Something most smokers I know refuse to acknowledge as legitimate. They seem to think it's all psychosomatic. Smoke of ANY kind bothers my lungs and enough of it will bother anybody; just ask firefighters and EMT's.
Nevertheless, I oppose the government regulating one more area of our lives. It would be nice if smokers showed a little courtesy towards non-smokers on their own. Just because THEY don't mind the smoke, they can't assume everybody else doesn't.
I've posted full article - access @ www.RightBias.com
"We" (smokers) have been warning all for years now, that the smoking-nazis will NOT be satisfied until they usurp all of our rights--even in our own homes.
Can see it now: Much as the 88 year old woman who had her door kicked in, shot at the idiot LEA and was killed in the process, it will not be long before a busy-body neighbor drops a dime on one of their neighbors who are smoking and on that anonymous "tip" the jackboots will execute a "no-knock" warrant (got to preserve the evidence, don't you know, and can't give a person a chance to destroy the evidence)and arrest a parent who is smoking if there are "chillens" on premises.
CAN'T ANYONE SEE THAT THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SMOKING, AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH "POWER AND CONTROL???"
Go ahead and laugh. Today its prohibiting a person from smoking in their home; tomorrow it will be someone arrested for providing one of their children with a Big Mac, Large Fries and Super Size Coke or anything which has Trans Fatty Acids.
Nanny state run amok. Let's build more prisons.
In the mean time, "Beam Me Up Scotty!!!"
There are many things I don't want to do, children around or not. But I don't want the government telling me with the authority to use force that I can't do them.
Not to mention the smoke that billows out of the smokestacks at the paper mill across the river 24/7/365.
And damnit, the government should force mom to roll up that window NOW!

Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds. More than 60 of these are known or suspected to cause cancer.
Secondhand smoke can be harmful in many ways. In the United States alone, each year it is responsible for:
* an estimated 46,000 deaths from heart disease in people who live with smokers but are not current smokersPregnant women exposed to ETS are also at increased risk of having low birth weight babies.* about 3,400 lung cancer deaths in nonsmoking adults
* other respiratory problems in nonsmokers, including coughing, phlegm, chest discomfort, and reduced lung function
* 150,000 to 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis) in children younger than 18 months of age, which result in 7,500 to 15,000 hospitalizations
* increases in the number and severity of asthma attacks in about 400,000 to 1 million asthmatic children
* increased incidence of middle ear infections in young children
An issue that continues to be an active focus of scientific research is whether secondhand smoke may increase the risk of breast cancer. Both mainstream and secondhand smoke contain about 20 chemicals that, in high concentrations, cause breast cancer in rodents. Chemicals in tobacco smoke reach breast tissue and are found in breast milk.
The evidence regarding secondhand smoke and breast cancer risk in human studies is controversial, at least in part because the risk has not been shown to be increased in active smokers. One possible explanation for this is that tobacco smoke may have different effects on breast cancer risk in smokers and in those who are just exposed to smoke.
A report from the California Environmental Protection Agency in 2005 concluded that the evidence regarding secondhand smoke and breast cancer is "consistent with a causal association" in younger, mainly premenopausal women. The 2006 US Surgeon General's report, The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke, concluded that there is "suggestive but not sufficient" evidence of a link at this point. In any case, women should be told that this possible link to breast cancer is yet another reason to avoid contact with secondhand smoke.
The 2006 US Surgeon General's report reached several important conclusions:
* Secondhand smoke causes premature death and disease in children and in adults who do not smoke.* Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections, ear problems, and more severe asthma. Smoking by parents causes respiratory symptoms and slows lung growth in their children.
* Exposure of adults to secondhand smoke has immediate adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and causes coronary heart disease and lung cancer.
* The scientific evidence indicates that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
* Many millions of Americans, both children and adults, are still exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes and workplaces despite substantial progress in tobacco control.
* Eliminating smoking in indoor spaces fully protects nonsmokers from exposure to secondhand smoke. Separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings cannot eliminate exposures of nonsmokers to secondhand smoke.
Been doing it for 56 years. The window is not wide open. Of the 16 cars I've sold in the last 35 years no one has every objected to my smoking and no one has ever known that the car belonged to a smoker. If you don't know what you're taliking about then don't bother responding to my post(s).
At the risk of repeating myself. Maine has already passed a law concerning smoking Foster parents and the foster kids: Maine: Do not smoke if your a foster parent! The DHS says so! It's ok if you sprawl on the couch at night drunk though! DHS creates smoking rules for foster homes, vehicles 2-26-04 - article here
Check out this ridiculous picture.................kids standing in the back seat of an open convertible! But oh my! The idiot driver isn't SMOKING! heh!
Far, far fewer than have had their brain matter sucked from their crushed skulls at "family plannning" clinics.
Notice how these "statistics" estimate deaths. Not one actual provable case. But it really doesn't matter. If liberals "don't like" something, it is banned or regulated. Fake stats just help the gullible and easily duped to get all outraged.
Well, that's a perfectly valid point in a vacuum, but the government already tells people with the authority to use force (I presume) that they must put their children in car seats and that children under a certain weight must ride in the back seat, etc., so I don't see this as being any different. To me, it's a matter of common sense. I put my kids in car seats and don't smoke in the car. I wouldn't dream of doing it. I will grant you that such a matter shouldn't be legislated, but I can't imagine that you wouldn't grant me that smoking with your kids in the car is less than smart.
And exactly how many children have died from second-hand smoke??
______
None, but kids with asthma can suffer, you can't legislate good parenting. Will the government get involved with parents who feed their kids McDonald's constantly, too? Answer: Yes. Any far-fetched nanny-state thing you can think of even in a comical way will come up for legislation.
