Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is telling associates that he’s launching a major new grass-roots movement to recapture the soul of the Republican Party, and quite possibly the White House.
Gingrich says that the effort will be much larger than his founding of GOPAC and his creation of the Contract with America.
The Georgia Republican is spearheading a program called "American Solutions for Winning the Future” in an effort to revitalize the GOP with Ronald Reagan conservatism.
This is the third time Gingrich has led a drive to steer the Republican Party toward traditional conservative values. In 1986, Gingrich took the chair of the Republican political action committee GOPAC and transformed it into an effective tool for electing conservative candidates. The stated theme of GOPAC was "a conservative opportunity society replacing the liberal welfare state.”
GOPAC was a key element in Gingrich’s rise to the leadership of the Republican caucus in Congress.
Then in 1994, as House Minority Leader, Gingrich was a co-author of the Contract with America, a conservative political platform that helped the GOP gain 54 seats in the House and end 40 years of Democratic majorities there.
Gingrich’s new program echoes the title of his 2005 book, "Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America.”
Sources close to the former speaker say Gingrich believes the Republican Party has once again lost its way, and needs to refocus its agenda with an eye toward regaining Congress in 2008.
Stepping back into the political spotlight could help Gingrich’s presidential aspirations as well.
He recently told an interviewer that he won’t decide whether to seek the White House in 2008 until September of 2007.
But insiders predict Gingrich could throw his hat into the ring if a true Reagan conservative doesn’t emerge as a likely GOP candidate.
For the time being, he’s playing his cards close to the vest. "I am not ‘running’ for president, I am seeking to create a movement to win the future by offering a series of solutions so compelling that if the American people say I have to be president, it will happen,” he tells Fortune magazine.
Gingrich said he plans to build grass-roots support for the health care, national security, and energy independence ideas he has been promoting for the past six years.

Newt helped the republicans regain the House. It wasn't a one-man effort. I liked what he had to say while he had his day in the sun. I subscribed to his newsletter (only got one issue, it just seemed to dribble away like so much with him).
I think he still has a role to play, but more behind the scenes, planning strategy and the like.
We are on the same page. If there are two of us on FR with exactly the same view, then I would image there are probably a substantial number of people in the Republican Party thinking the same.
It's still a long way off to the primaries. And I can still remember when the primaries didn't matter that much. The convention decided who it would be.
The reason is that I refuse to help that kind of liberal to gain more power inside the Republican Party. The Republican Party is the only hope for America's future. But, all hope is lost if the RINOs take complete control....
Well, then you and I are probably "weirdos" :)... cause I feel exactly the same. I always say the "winning is not always winning and losing is not always losing" (cause it may to lead to cleaning house, re-organizing and setting strategy, recharging our batteries and win again).
Now that we lost, we no longer have to be worry about "preserving the power we had in both houses." I will tell you something, for the life of me, I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND backing up and spending all that money on that jerk Chafee of Rhode Island!... At this point I believe, the GOP was simply fighting for "power," priciples went out of the door. I am GLAD CHAFEE IS GONE, same thing with anyone who was part to the McCain's gang (De whine?)... and I would love to have Specter, Hegel, and MacaCain gone as well!... hey... we lost, I can say it now. Now people may say "are you crazy?" Well, if I recall the Rats did relatively well opposing GW. Same thing when Clinton was president... again, the Gop did a good job of keeping in check... so this is not the end fo the world... at all!
After all we "had it all!" - And I'll bet you lots of people feel this way - CONGRESS, SENATE AND PRESIDENCY... and considering that advantage... What did we do with all that power? Of course, who could have forseen a traitor like McCain, a "Judas" willing to sell out and sabotage GOP at every corner. Traitor McCain did his best to take the wind out of the the sails the first time the GOP wanted to use that power. I almost hate McCain... and for the life of me I will never understand people who even consider him as a choice.
You do know however that in today's culture STYLE trumps SUBSTANCE and one need look no farther that the popularity of Clinton!
Newt will have an extremely difficult time being ELECTED [POTUS] by the 'feeling' public......much harder than being nominated by a 'thinking' GOP!
I don't know a lot about Hunter, other than he took a lead in border security. I think it is difficult for someone to go from the House to the Presidency. But I will keep an open mind. Do you think he is going to run?

(BTW, Newt is brilliant, and would be a very good choice. He is a true Constitutionalist and historian.)

Dop you remember the mass signing? From a Heritage lecture published October '95:
"The Contract itself emerged publicly with the staging of the mass signing of the Contract on the steps of the U.S. Capitol by 367 candidates for office on September 27, 1994. On that day, all of these candidates publicly pledged: "If we break this Contract, throw us out." The Republicans who were already Members of the House of Representatives organized themselves into 11 working groups that eventually drafted ten bills that made up the Contract."

The drafters and signers of the contract did exactly what they promised to do.
Why are you trying to portray that as a failure?
Just another example of how God doesn't force anyone to choose His will for their life.
Most of us get an opportunity to know Him because of His work on the cross. Those who choose the narrow road, get to know Him as their best friend.
Sad, but too true.. as evidenced by how few of the so-called man on the street can't even identify a picture of VP Cheney or Rumsfeld.

I live in Cobb County, Georgia. I was one of those loyal followers, reading is books, going to rallies at Wheeler High School and Williamson Brothers BBQ, putting out yard signs and voting Speaker Gingrich into office every term. I voted for him against the Cookie Monster. I voted for him against the stupid Carrot-top.
I don't have a LexisNexis® account so it is difficult for me to locate the MSM articles you have asked for. I did find an archived lead-in to an editorial letter in the The Atlanta Urinal and Constipation from back then that suggests the frustration I shared with many others.

Watching Newt Gingrich's farewell town hall meeting on C-SPAN this past weekend at first made me angry. As a voter in the Sixth District, I feel cheated and disregarded by Gingrich. I remember to well the circumstances of his leaving Congress. I had just voted for him and he had no right to resign at such a critical time in world events. Many of the circumstances were revealed in posted articles right here on FR.
I am not at all a Gingrich hater. I only wish in hindsight that he had shutdown the government in the 1996 budget crises and that he had stayed to fight for us in spite of the private issues that he had.
If you need further proof of anything else, then you can go get some relief whenever the wind blows too.
Why don't you read more carefully. I did not criticize Newt, I merely pointed out that the posts did not give any information on what he was advocating while lauding him greatly. It is not criticism at all to do that, merely requesting information, which the exchange of which is the reason for this forum. Before you criticize me it would be good to actually read and comprehend what I am saying. Your earnest advocacy ssems to have prevented you from reading what I posted and reacting to it with information. Had you done so you no doubt would have boosted Newt's cause instead of offending needlessly with groundless assault. With people such as yourself on his side engaging in such tactics he won't fare very well.

I think you better upgrade your own reading comprehension skills. I did react to your post with information. I gave you a link to Newt.org. Obviously you haven't found the time to get over to Newt's website yet, and learn what his policy and political positions are all about.
Instead of wasting time engaging in ridicule, try getting informed. Without blaming others for your shortcomings.
