Gingrich Plans Massive Outreach

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is telling associates that he’s launching a major new grass-roots movement to recapture the soul of the Republican Party, and quite possibly the White House.

Gingrich says that the effort will be much larger than his founding of GOPAC and his creation of the Contract with America.

The Georgia Republican is spearheading a program called "American Solutions for Winning the Future” in an effort to revitalize the GOP with Ronald Reagan conservatism.

This is the third time Gingrich has led a drive to steer the Republican Party toward traditional conservative values. In 1986, Gingrich took the chair of the Republican political action committee GOPAC and transformed it into an effective tool for electing conservative candidates. The stated theme of GOPAC was "a conservative opportunity society replacing the liberal welfare state.”

GOPAC was a key element in Gingrich’s rise to the leadership of the Republican caucus in Congress.

Then in 1994, as House Minority Leader, Gingrich was a co-author of the Contract with America, a conservative political platform that helped the GOP gain 54 seats in the House and end 40 years of Democratic majorities there.

Gingrich’s new program echoes the title of his 2005 book, "Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America.”

Sources close to the former speaker say Gingrich believes the Republican Party has once again lost its way, and needs to refocus its agenda with an eye toward regaining Congress in 2008.

Stepping back into the political spotlight could help Gingrich’s presidential aspirations as well.

He recently told an interviewer that he won’t decide whether to seek the White House in 2008 until September of 2007.

But insiders predict Gingrich could throw his hat into the ring if a true Reagan conservative doesn’t emerge as a likely GOP candidate.

For the time being, he’s playing his cards close to the vest. "I am not ‘running’ for president, I am seeking to create a movement to win the future by offering a series of solutions so compelling that if the American people say I have to be president, it will happen,” he tells Fortune magazine.

Gingrich said he plans to build grass-roots support for the health care, national security, and energy independence ideas he has been promoting for the past six years.

I sure do hope that the possible Blue Dog Democrats just voted into the U.S. House of Representatives are really just that-Blue Dog Democrats, who really don't toe the line with Speaker Pelosi. I'm concerned about all of the political damage that a Democratic majority will end up inflicting upon all of us throughout the U.S. for as long as the Democrats maintain their majority Congressional status. This may include but also not be limited to more tax increases, bigger government, more regulations and red tape, major job loses due to minimum wage increases, and amnesty for illegal immigrants, which would make the U.S. disappear as a whole country.

Yes, I've seen him. I greatly admire his role in returning majority rule to Republicans after 40 year of Democratic control. I think he is brilliant.

But in my opinion he comes across wonkish and nerdy and thus has no populace appeal. And I don't think there is a thing about him that is physically attractive.

Even he did not criticize the President for his over zealous economic relief after Katrina and has criticized Republicans little for their expansion of government. He also seems too sensitive to easily manipulated by the media.

Oh, and one more thing....I will never forgive Newt for his role in attempting to forgo the impeachment of one William Jefferson Clinton, because as you recall he himself was involved in an extra-marital affair, though this has nothing to do with my unwillingness to support him for president.

..Well, I do remember. Newt's infidelity to his wife was a part of the picture. It made him look like a hypocrite. I am your credible source....

At least that was my impression at the time... We were all up in arms with Clinton's antics with Monica Lewinsky... and then all of the sudden, look who is doing the same crap!... And Newt was gone.

Let's not beat around the bush... If someone has baggage, we might as well bring it right out and let's put it on the table, because we all know that that all this stuff will come out - amplified 10 times - once the games begin :)

I like Newt because he is brilliant, smart, dynamic and a fantastic speaker - Something I long for! :) if you get my meaning! - But He does have baggage, just like Guliani does too. I could see myself voting for him as a last resort, so far. which I would not do for traitor McCain or even Guliani (can't accept his social issues stands)

To be fair, he may have thought it better for the party and/or others may have convinced him this was so.

Yes, I have to do more reading up on Romney. More than one poster has accused him of being a Rino.

Good luck to him. He is one of the last true Conservatives in the GOP.

I would refuse to vote for McCain or Guliani even it they were running against Hillary.

The reason is that I refuse to help that kind of liberal to gain more power inside the Republican Party. The Republican Party is the only hope for America's future. But, all hope is lost if the RINOs take complete control.

Newt is no Ronald Reagan.

So what? Who is? Besides, Reagan was a man, not a god. He had faults too. We're dealing with human beings here.
