It was the jewel of Pompeii's libertines: a brothel decorated with frescoes of erotic figures believed to be the most popular in the ancient Roman city.
The Lupanare which derives its name from the Latin word "lupa," or "prostitute" was presented to the public again Thursday following a yearlong, $253,000 restoration to clean up its frescoes and fix the structure.

One item of interest: According to the article, a 'short time' was priced at the rate of eight times a portion of wine. Adjusting for inflation, and assuming we aren't talking Le Chambertin or Mouton Rothchild, that's probably less than $20.
Anyone have any idea of the current market price? Were those really the good old days.
Well, at least now there is something to do in Pompeii....
I was in Pompeii last year and the guide showed us the sign still on the walls that "pointed" the way to the brothels. It was good for a laugh.
When you walk on the streets of Pompeii, there are signs ground into the pavers with a butterfly and arrrows pointing to the whore house. What's with the butterfly? Go to the whore house and you will leave feeling as free as a butterfly! (at least that's what I was told by the guide.)
Been to Pompeii and would love to see it again someday. Italy and the Australia are still on my 'want to vist/re-visit" list.
That would explain the price in post #1.
FYI.
"Fully" restored?
Bill CLinton is rumored to be en route...
Hmmm. Maybe it wasn't what you thought it was.
Was that butterfly wearing a toupee?
I heard Bill Clinton has already booked his trip.
The headline makes it sound like they are opening it up for business. LOL.
Open for business?...........Same-o, same-o.......

You need to refer that question to DU.

Estne volumen in toga, an solum tibi libet me videre?
(Is that a scroll in your toga, or are you just happy to see me?)
Their last, and next "Madam"......
I'm no archaeologist...not even an amateur, but I loved visiting Pompeii years ago. Don't really remember the brothel, but I did remember there was a house, believed to be a bachelor pad for two brothers, I think -- and they too had the great...er... artwork on the walls. Really fascinating stuff.
Thanks for the report.
