West Point opens Islamic worship space as Muslim cadets increase

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Muslims at the U.S. Military Academy numbered just two in 2001. This year, there are 32.

Now West Point has opened its first space dedicated to Muslims, a worship hall complete with a pulpit facing Mecca. The space officially opened Thursday.

"I knew the Army had a policy of religious tolerance, but I didn't know it was to this extent," said first-year Cadet Ahmed Moomin, 20, from the Maldives.

Until now, Friday prayers were held in an increasingly crowded first-floor office, said Imam Asadullah, the academy's Muslim cleric. The number of Muslim cadets jumped by 10 from last year.

The new hall is large enough for dozens of followers, he said.

West Point's Muslim leaders approached administrators last year for help.

"We live in a world where everyone is looking at the United States saying, 'You're anti-Islam.' But here at West Point, that's not what we do," West Point Chaplain Col. John Cook said.

"They served and fought in almost every campaign in the Pacific from the Aleutians to Iwo Jima racking up several Silver Stars and Distinguished Service Crosses along the way."

It was policy that they not serve in the Pacific Theater.

More to the point, followers of Emperor were not allowed to serve. That's a distinction I'm trying, but apparently failing, to make to you.

"That sentence sums up the entire problem with your opinion and the people who share it."

My "opinion" happens to be the Constitutional rule of law. You either abide by it our you don't. That doesn't mean, of course, that you always have to like it.

"None of the governments lawyers could come up with legal justification to kill bin Laden when we had the chance in the 1990s."

Not true. We had a CINC who refused to make a decision.

"None of the government lawyers could come up with legal justification for the CIA to communicate with FBI."

Not true. We had an administration that systematically hamstrung our intelligence network. But there was plenty of justification (legal and otherwise) to fix things.

"Nobody can come upwith a legal argument against putting a muslim in control of a nuclear submarine or other nuclear launch codes."

You don't have any idea what is involved in our nuclear launch doctrine and procedures do you? No idea about the depth of background investigations, psychological profiling and constant monitoring. Why base your argument on something you know very little about?

" I don't "get you" because I don't recognize any logical connection to what we are talking about in this thread"

The "connection" you should see is Islam.

Would you have had the USMA educate Nazis in the 40s? Islam is a supremacist political ideology if it's anything.

The Constitution does not require that we support those belonging to a group that desire to overthrow it.

I am working my way through this thread lol. Hope you survive it. Keep up the good work.

As to your thoughts you are right on. There is a tad bit of drama every time moslim is brought up. What is ironic is that this is assimilation. Which we want. However the demonization of American muslims just has the opposite affect which makes the situation far worse.

"We did NOT allow Nazis or followers of Bushido. Not known ones, at least. "

That is a far more logically consistent argument regarding muslims than the whole Japanese interment thing. Similarly, we don't allow members of the Communist Party to serve in the military. This is the closest approach I've seen for a legal justification to exclude muslims from Service Academies. The initiative for this, however, is going to have to come from Congress. Which means we've got a lot of work to do.

In getting a security clearance, a bankruptcy will cause problems and may cause one not to receive a TS or even a Secret clearance. Of course most American bankrupcy veterans are very loyal to the USA.

32 mohammedans at West Point is a much greater security risk than those folks with financial problems. A certain number even if a small percentage will predictably serve interests other than American interests.

At various universities I've known mohammedans that never failed to cheat their butts off so maybe of that 32 some will not graduate.

You apparently need another 9/11 attack and a few thousand more dead bodies to realize what the hell is going on.

Let me guess what the hell is going on that I'm too stupid to know - we're at war with all Muslims, who are the enemy. Every Muslim is out to kill us. The only good Muslim is a dead Muslim.

Sorry. Although that seems to be a popular view of some on Free Republic, I don't believe it. The President of the United States doesn't believe it. Most Americans don't believe it.

We're not at war with all of Islam - if we were, we'd be fighting a billion people, and would be severely outnumbered. If we were, we'd have no shot in Iraq, where we have a mere 150,000 boots on the ground to conquer a nation of 25,000,000. We wouldn't be training Iraqi forces (a.k.a. Muslims) to take care of their own country - we'd be forcing conversions at the end of an M-16. And we certainly wouldn't be training future Iraqi (a.k.a. Muslim) officers at places like West Point.

By the way, the level of abuse I and other posters who dare try to use reason have taken on this thread for is uncalled for. I've been called an ACLU member, not a conservative and brainwashed by Hillary!, and been told I can't read and need another 9/11 attack to realize what's going on. I don't think I've personally attacked anyone.

Post 96... El Cid... You got it! I think about my grandchildren. Are they aware of the enemy within? Everytime I go past a Mosque, I ask myself, "What are they teaching in there?"
Will keep your post. Read it to the children ...some have all ready been brainwashed by the Public Schools.

Uh no, the refernce to Nazi exclusion, and our question about Japanese loyalties is pretty darn similar. However, it is clear to me that you are an intellectually honest poster. Have a good night.

What exactly are the entrance requirements and qualifications to enter West Point?

Most federal academy cadets are appointed by your congress critters.

For me at least, this is reason to turn out the turncoat representatives.

"The initiative for this, however, is going to have to come from Congress. Which means we've got a lot of work to do."

Yes we do. Expunging multicultural post-colonial guilt from both parties is a tall order. The Dems are a total loss in that and other regards.

We need people in office who are not so close to the Saudis and the UAE. If the "you're with us or against us" line had any meaning, we wouldn't be "friends" with them any longer. We wouldn't be ACTIVELY importing more! Not celebrating Muslim holidays in the White House would be another welcome change. We will NOT get that from the Democrats. We may eventually get that from the Republicans. We need someone like the current PM of Australia here.

It'd help to have people in office who cared at least as much for the plight of Christians in the Middle East as they do for the manufactured plight of the Palestinians - a "people" who cheered 9/11 and Rice believes it'll be our greatest legacy to build them a country. We sent men to the moon and she thinks building another terrorist state would be our "greatest legacy". That's utterly repugnant.

Sorry for the rant.

Oh, yes. We've got a great deal of work ahead of us.

The way Bush has been fawning over Muslims is a damn embarassment to a thinking individual. I agree you have been hammered too hard tho!

Went throught the entire thread. No one gave a legal justification lol.

People need to take a deep breath here on this issue. Every year in areas where there is a area of high muslim population there is usually a article dealing with Muslim kids and them playing under the bright lights on Friday night. I have seen a couple of those articles on forums and these poor kids get lambasted Kids for goodness sake. What could be more AMerican than playing football. Sounds like a good thing to me.

Also I noticed this not once in this thread did any one mention any of the thousands of brave Iraqis that are muslim that are getting blown to bits fighting these extremist. That is telling

"So, they participate in Friday prayers but are not permitted to leave class 5 times a day to pray to Mecca, is that right?"

They are not allowed to do anything that will impact their military training. If they can fit their prayers in on their own time, that's fine. Otherwise, too bad. For example, during Ramadan, Muslim USAFA Cadets don't have to eat during the day. But the kitchen doesn't open for them at night. Their on their own.

"Husband says to tell you a LOT has changed since he was at USNA. :)"

Ha. Tell him it got MUCH harder after he graduated. ; )

Japanese fought with distinction in the US military after Pearl Harbor.

These Japanese did not belong to the same "religion" as those they were fighting and they gave their loyalty to the US--not to allah or Hirohito.

Islam is a political religion and belonging to it should disqualify anyone to become a citizen in the US since the religion advocates killing and deceiving all infidels until "peace" (all convert to Islam). The religion is incompatible with the Constitution of the U.S. in too numerous ways to mention.
