Rush reports that a Cessna has been reported as crashing into (at least one) apartment complex in NYC Mannhattan's upper east side - on East 71st Street.
I've never flown in the New York City airspace, but I understand that there is, or at least was, a corridor up a river there that is used for sightseeing and does not require the pilot to be in contact with ATC as long as you stay in a certain designated corridor. My understanding is that you do have to stay at a certain altitude block while you are in that corridor.
Generally, a 1500 feet ceiling , 8 miles visisbility would be enough to do some sightseeing in many areas if the area I was flying in permitted flying at or below that altitude without requiring the pilot to be under positive control by ATC. I personally would prefer more altitude but I guess if I had a guest that wanted to go flying just to sightsee and they wouldn't be available to wait for better weather I would fly in those conditions for that purpose if I knew the area well enough and I wasn't straying too far away from an airport, either the one I took off from or one I could safely get to in the event of an emergency of some kind.
That said, I don't believe this was terrorism but a horrific incident. Good to see air cover response though.

Choppers crash into the east river a couple of times a year, But this is the first plane that I can remember.
I was born and raised in Manhattan and never knew that York Ave. was named for Sgt. York. Thank you for that information.

My only thing is that in the 70s, if you're above the top of that building, you're in LaGuardia's airspace; that plane had no business anywhere near there.

WCBS rumor - Two fatalities - only 1 fatality is in the plane Fire chief didn't say other fatality was in the building. (He did say that he saw the wreckage in the apartment and it's definitely a plane). Talk on the street that the other fatality might have been someone who jumped into the river from the plane.
