Yes, indeed, Luther figured this out (more than) four centuries ago (I'm sure you didn't mean 'decades'), merely by reading the Holy Scriptures and having no cause to invent imaginary doctrines. What a concept!

**What exactly was Luther doing in 1966, anyway, and where was he doing it?!?**
LOL! Good catch!

The Biblical precept of "Paradise" or "Outer Darkness".
They erase your hard drive, you're out ~ gone ~ hasta la vista baby ~ ain't home no mo'.
That's not exactly the popular concept of "Hell" ~ and to be quite frank about it, the popular concept of "Hell" is more than vaguely reminescent of "The Demon Realm" of Hindu belief.

It certainly does.
I saw people dancing it in our building lobby last week during FallFest.

Just some of the Scripture that supports the concept of Purgatory:
PURGATORY
Lk 12:58-59; 1 Cor 3:15; Mt 5:25-26 ... temporary agony.
Heb 12:6-11 ... Gods painful discipline.
Mt 12:32 ... no forgiveness ... nor in the age to come.
1 Pet 3:18-20 ... might be purgatory (limbo?).
1 Pet 4:6 ... preached to the dead.
Rev 21:27 ... nothing unclean shall enter heaven.
Heb 12:23 ... souls in heaven are perfect.
Col 1:24; 2 Sam 12:13-14 ... extra suffering.
2 Mac 12:43-46 ... sacrifice for the dead.
2 Tim 1:15-18 ... prayer for Onesiphorus for that Day.
1 Jn 5:14-17 ... mortal/venial sins

Luther figured this out 4 decades ago.
What exactly was Luther doing in 1966, anyway, and where was he doing it?!? Perhaps he was in limbo...doing the limbo.

There have been congregations of believers since the days of the Apostles, almost 300 years before there was any Pope or Roman Catholic Church, who never were confused about this, and never had to figure this out. They knew what Paradise was in Luke ch. 16, and didn't need a sinner in a fancy robe on a fancy throne to tell them whether there was anything like "Limbo."
When will the pope ask his theologians to get around to discussing the relevance of a pope.

He said that while affirming people's hope, the document takes pains to explain the Christian belief that baptism is necessary to guarantee salvation and urges parents to baptise their infants. John 3:16 doesn't seem to mention baptism.

I tend to think the idea of unbaptized babies going to limbo was a man man idea to get people to baptize babies fast and keep Church membership going . I couldn't see God not loving these babies as much as he dose the Pope Himself.

And Luther was wrong. What the title of this article implies is not really what is happening.
Secular journalists ---- I'm sure you get the drift. Read the links above -- it's been in the religion forum for weeks!

But it is supported in Holy Scripture. Think about the passages I referenced.

Actually it more than likely derives from Zoroastrian beliefs with a little Hellenic beliefs such as Tartarus thrown in.

Luther did invent imaginary doctrines:
1) Sola scriptura
2) Sola fide
Neither is found in scripture. He also cut books from the Bible (both Old Testament and New).

"Unlike purgatory, which Catholics say is rooted in Scripture,.."
?????????
Where?
A lot of that is covered at this link (I am too lazy to "linkasize" it, so you will need to cut and paste it into your browser window - sorry!!). I am not sure if this article is "all-inclusive" or not, but it certainly covers a lot of material, including Old and New Testament citations. Interesting to note that some non-Catholic chuches also hold the belief. It if you don't agree with the article after having read it, you will at least come away much better informed on the topic!!
