Bailey (Col.) School Hostage Situation (Update: Standoff over, 1 student and perp dead)
CBS4 Denver ^ | 9/27/06 | cbs4denver

Posted on 09/27/2006 11:57:19 AM PDT by conservative in nyc

Platte Canyon High School in Bailey was evacuated early Wednesday afternoon because of a hostage situation with a gunman, Park County emergency dispatchers said.

Dispatchers said there was at least one hostage.

The adjoining middle school was also evacuated.

Jan Howard, a secretary to the superintendent of Park County Schools, said the students were being taken to a safe location and only sheriff's deputies and fire officials were being allowed into the schools.

Authorities said U.S. Highway 285 was closed in Bailey because of the situation.

Jefferson County authorities said deputies, including the SWAT team and bomb squad, from their sheriff's office were on stand-by to assist if called by Park County authorities.

They moved the children to a location so they could check who they are and are releasing them to their parents.

A sensible move, for a variety of reasons -- such as, by process of elimination they can figure out who's being held hostage.

I find it strange not knowing whether the hostages were adults or students.

35 year old suspect.

Emergency assistance has been called from Jefferson County, including a bomb squad. The mutual assistance requests may be precautionary in nature.

Didn't Columbine take place in Jefferson County? Perhaps they may now be considered the experts in dealing with school crisis situations, based on what they've learned after Columbine.

I hope this is resolved where no hostages are harmed.

That's what we're all hoping and praying for. Hopefully the guy is just a twisted love sick nut who just wants the attention and nothing else.

Exactly. And they should have enough intel from the exiting students in that class to give out more.

Somethings not right. As long as it's a disgruntled parent, ex-boyfriend, psycho teacher (but we would have known that by now... unless the school was more worried about getting sued instead of the kids safety), i'm okay.

As long as it's not a trial run on Beslan for response times. Because geez, if it was, every jihadi with a tv or internet would know how we operate in this situation.

The assault vehicle was off the flatbed before they started focusing on the students. Not that that little detail means anything...

" based on what they've learned "

Officer Safety First? That didn't go too well.

I bet the school can't ask about their personal info... not that those two would give it. I hope they don't come to the school though.

The teacher with the pervert husband complains that its unfair that he can't visit her at school. However, it is the legal system that prohibits him from being near a school NOT the district itself. In terms of the inmate, I wouldn't be surprise if he could visit (IIRC, he's not in on a sex charge).
I would be willing to bet the the UEA (local teacher's union) would defend either teacher if something did happen, however. Also, both teachers have tenure.

I'm sure they're watching now. Yet another reason that taking a school full of children is reprehensible. (As if we needed another!)

I can understand locking down the adjacent junior high, but I wonder why they locked down an entire other high school. Probably just in case it was part of some mass terrorist plot or something.

The home schooling movement is getting a lot of free advertising out of this.

" Jefferson County authorities said deputies, including the SWAT team and bomb squad, from their sheriff's office were on the scene to assist Park County authorities. "

Yes, Columbine was in Jefferson County in suburban Denver.

This is in the rural mountains in Park County.

Since Columbine, I believe that Jefferson County has a different sheriff and hopefully better training and tactics by now.

The only safe student is a home-schooled student.

"Anyone watching live; was that a white tank they just unloaded??"
