Platte Canyon High School in Bailey was evacuated early Wednesday afternoon because of a hostage situation with a gunman, Park County emergency dispatchers said.

Dispatchers said there was at least one hostage.

The adjoining middle school was also evacuated.

Jan Howard, a secretary to the superintendent of Park County Schools, said the students were being taken to a safe location and only sheriff's deputies and fire officials were being allowed into the schools.

Authorities said U.S. Highway 285 was closed in Bailey because of the situation.

Jefferson County authorities said deputies, including the SWAT team and bomb squad, from their sheriff's office were on stand-by to assist if called by Park County authorities.

SWAT Dispatched To Bailey School Situation

Platte Canyon High School Evacuated After Threat

POSTED: 12:12 pm MDT September 27, 2006
UPDATED: 1:35 pm MDT September 27, 2006

BAILELY, Colo. -- A possible hostage situation was reported just aftern noon at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, about 40 miles southwest of Denver.

The situation was still ongoing more than an hour later.

U.S. Highway 285, which runs in front of the school, was closed in that area.

Students at the school were evacuated from the building as well as students at Fitzsimmons Middle School, which is next door. Both schools are about four miles west of Bailey.

The evacuations came after a loud noise, said Jan Howard, a secretary to the superintendent of schools.

"I don't know what the noise was," she said.

As a precaution, nearby Jefferson County schools were also locked down in the Conifer area. Schools in Fairplay, Colo., about 30 miles away, were also locked down as a precaution.

Parents of students from Platte Canyon and Fitzsimons were asked to go to the Park County Sheriff's sub-station in Bailey.

A Park County sheriff's dispatcher told 7News they had a report of an adult inside the high school who was reported to have a backpack with a bomb. They also said he several hostages.

One hostage was released, said Lance Clem, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Public Safety.

The Jefferson County SWAT team was called to the school to aid Park County Sheriff's deputies.

Platte Canyon High School has 467 students enrolled during the 2005-2006 school year, according to its Web site.

Fitzsimmons Middle School has about 350 students.

I'm sure. If they have kids out and safe , they need to be released to their parents though, IMO.

Emergency assistance has been called from Jefferson County, including a bomb squad.

The mutual assistance requests may be precautionary in nature.

The kids should go to the parents.

We are just getting small views of the mess.

Some of it may be inaccurate.

The school districts are not releasing any information about where evacuated students are being taken.

They'd better damn well release that information to the parents!

violating the school's Gun Free Zone policy.

I hope and pray this comes to a peaceful resolution. I doubt the media will bother to make mention of the policy (or the total uselessness thereof).
It blows my mind how naive some people can be - how can you believe that posting a sign/policy will stop a criminal (hello, they intentionally break the law)!

They moved the children to a location so they could check who they are and are releasing them to their parents.

I have a relative working in a public school here in Utah. One of her colleagues has an inmate boyfriend and another has an ex con husband. He was incarcerated with a child sex crime.

The job has been a real eye-opener for her.
