Mayor Daley suggested Thursday that high school be extended for a fifth year to defray college education costs now squeezing working poor and middle-class families.

Let's hear it for one more year of unionized indoctrination. Just in time for the 2008 election. The super-seniors will be told how to vote by their teachers.
Really difficult to understand how this would be an improvement. Altho I had a number of students who took 5 years go get thru high school.....
I personally think they should change the law that allows students to keep retaking classes at taxpayer costs. I only think the first shot should be free. If you have to retake a class you should have to pay for it (either with money or real community service). I knew students who just refused to do any work, failed every class and stayed in school (free lunch and breakfast, and lots of young girls to try to date) until they were 21, and then finally had to leave.

That might not be a bad thing in some cases...
For ages the province of Ontario out of step with the rest of North America had a 5 year high school system. Yes Ontario had grade 13 and I went through it. Finally and recently it came in line and dropped grade 13.
BS - Kids need less public education, not more. This is a pander to the NEA and other groups who have more to make - $$$ - by adding another school year. Ever notice we never hear about the 'obscene' profits made by textbook companies but we always hear about the 'obscene' profits made by oil companies?
Yes, high school seniors with kids at home - another problems in Chicago.
I like the idea of making that second class available only through purchase--actions (or non-actions) have consequences.
I think I would go with the service option since I know that as a youngster my family could not have paid for a second class and, sigh, money is too easy and there is always some fool who will give money.
Work though is hard and the best teacher.

Our district is pushing for the whole preschool thing too. I had to put my daughters in private school because the district failed them miserably last year. I want my tax dollars back, so I really don't want more of my tax dollars going for preschool or a 5th year of high school.
By the time I got to Senior Year in HS, I only needed a few units to graduate and 1 required course. I went to night school over summer and graduated a year early.
Other than being in drama and band, I despised HS. I never went through ceremonies and never looked back.
It's only with genuinely Private, Church-related, or Home schooling that you can pay your money and take your choice.
Separation of School and State.

That has more to do with the way the cirriculum is taught than anything else. The schools that we have present everything in a random, confusing manner. The disastrous Whole Word reading instruction (instead of phonics) is the most obvious example, but hardly the only one. Math books, for example, seem to be confusing and boring on purpose. Also, all lessons are given in a dull, repetitive, assembly-line manner, in which rote memorization is emphasized and comprehension is unimportant.
Higher standards won't do any good without addressing the methods of presenting the material.
Yes, I like the community service option, as long as it was real work. These kids take free school/lunch/breakfast/access to friends/etc for granted. That should cost them (and their parents).

Oh yeah, making bored kids spend ANOTHER year in high school is gonna help a LOT. /sarc
My apologies; I misunderstood you. It's tough to compare father and son; by now the father has become such a legendary figure - for good and ill - and also, times have changed.
The law of intended consequences. - No, I did not misspell.
>Democrates are not stupid. They are absolutely brilliant when it comes to spending other people's money.<
Republicrats also do a fairly good job at that, and at growing government to gigantic proportions. But then, the problem was only Mayor Daly, wasn't it? Pretty stupid, IMHO.
Daley is always tossing out ideas like this that he never follows through on.
As far as costing him votes -- that would depend on whether or not he has an actual viable challenger in the election. Last time out he won by a "landslide" of 82% against three nobodies. That's 82% of a voter turnout of 33% -- so something like 27% of the eligible voters returned Daley to office. With rumblings from State Sen. Meeks and Congressman Jackson about possibly running for mayor, I don't think Daley can count on such an easy ride again, so he probably needs to mind his p's and q's, and not come up with questionable plans such as this one.
Interesting...
