A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.
During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.
Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.
The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.
Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.
Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

I called them. My sister said, "Oh my god, let me wake up Mark," then we said goodbye.

U.S. Raises Threat Level at Airports
08.10.2006, 03:24 AM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The U.S. government raised its threat warning to the highest level for commercial flights from Britain to the United States early Thursday in response to a reported terror plot in London and also stepped up the general level for all flights within the U.S. or entering the country.
"We believe that these arrests (in London) have significantly disrupted the threat, but we cannot be sure that the threat has been entirely eliminated or the plot completely thwarted," said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff in announcing that the threat level for flights from Britain to the United States has been raised to the highest "severe or red" level.
"To defend further against any remaining threat from this plot, we will also raise the threat level to high, or orange, for all commercial aviation operating in or destined for the United States," Chertoff said.
A statement issued by Chertoff said "currently, there is no indication ... of plotting within the United States."
"Consistent with these higher threat levels, the Transportation Security Administration is coordinating with federal partners, airport authorities and commercial airlines on expanding the intensity of existing security requirements," Chertoff said.
"Due to the nature of the threat revealed by this investigation, we are prohibiting any liquids, including beverages, hair gels, and lotions from being carried on the airplane."
He said the changes take effect at 4 a.m. local time across the United States and will be undated as warranted."
No further evidence of your childish, poor attitude will be necessary. You've now got it covered.
Not just that, security risk at large. How many of those laptops are carrying lists of people's credit card numbers, social security numbers, other juicy stuff that the carriers have been told to jealously guard?
Hey Allegra .... what's going on there? They keeping you hopping?
I'm going to have to go lie down too...I'm pooped.
OPINION: Number 5 and Number 11 have that certain look in their eyes.
It definitely spells Non-Dateable.
True dichotomy, if Congress has the guts to stop the diarrhea of things like those useless mobile homes.
No....I think that we had another.
Methinks the laddie doth protest too much.
Meaning thou.
"..Chertoff said "currently, there is no indication ... of plotting within the United States."

Blasts near Shiite shrine in Iraq kills 24 (Najaf)
Am I missing something? Did they say that flights today were targets or that they just uncovered a plot?
Ever since this war began, I have said these men we have protecting our country with their very lives are different from the rest of us. They have heart, soul and courage that is so very far beyond that of the ordinary person...it defies understanding, their greatness. It is with a humble, but very grateful heart that I say I stand in awe at the sons & daughters of this war. That same overwhelming awe I hold for all those sons & daughters, I hold for their unbelievable mothers.
I cannot imagine the pain and anger these insane people like Cindy Sheehan and Cynthia Mckinny must stir in you. But, please remember, Derek died for America, he died for an America that he knew was so much better than so many of her ugly, ugly people...an America he had to have loved with his whole heart.
There is no way to ever thank you and your son for what y'all have given...but, I know of nothing else to say except, "Thank you and God bless you."
