Robin Williams Checks Self Into Rehab
The Indy Channel ^ | August 9, 2006 | AP

Posted on 08/09/2006 12:40:08 PM PDT by Abathar

Acclaimed actor-comedian Robin Williams has checked himself into rehab to battle alcoholism.

According to "Access Hollywood," Williams' publicist announced the actor's decision to seek treatment.

"After 20 years of sobriety, Robin Williams found himself drinking again and has decided to take proactive measures to deal with this for his own well-being and the well-being of his family. He asks that you respect his and his family's privacy during this time. He looks forward to returning to work this fall to support his upcoming film releases."

No further details were made available.

Williams made his mark on the television sitcom "Mork and Mindy" before starring in a string of hit feature films, including "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Aladdin," "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Dead Poets Society."

He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1998 for the drama "Good Will Hunting."

Williams' recent roles include the hit family comedies "Robots" and "RV." He also starred in the thriller "The Night Listener" over the weekend, but the film faired poorly at the box office, opening in 10th place.

Good for him, and I wish him the best for recovery.

Yeah, Martin's technically working, but he's appearing in crap and has for years.

My favorite films of his were "Roxanne" and "LA Story," which I think is a work of genius.

And "The Jerk" was really something.

A friend of mine still has a couple of Cosby's recordings on vinyl. Once in a while we drag them out and play them. They are still as funny today as they were 30 or more years ago.

I wish I could remember the name of the company who puts this sortware out, but I've got some software that will allow you to rip the audio from DVDs into MP3 files. The beauty of that is I've now got audio recordings of "Bill Cosby, Himself" as well as all the Ron White and Blue Collar Comedy Tour DVDs.

"Bill Cosby, Himself" is one of the very funniest comedy concert performances, ever, by any comedian!

No, Bill Hicks, you can google him.

Glad to see others talking about what a fraud Williams is, you'd be considered a genius too if you stole everyones best material and used it on tv.

He was also good in some movie in which he played a weirdo...

The role came naturally.

And Mrs. Doubtfire was just downright creepy. Tootsie was way superior and didn't have the ick factor of deceiving little children.

Robin Williams' "regular" voice is strangely contrived and artificial, and seems arrogant.

That all said I hope he gets himself straightened out.

Jumanji is one of my all-time favorite movies, very underrated. Other than that, there are a bunch of other Williams movies that I enjoyed, but nothing as memorable as Jumanji. Can't stand the improv stuff, and hated Mork.

You're right. I forgot about that one. I think the main reason his acting annoys me is that his personality is too strong, so characters often come off as over-acted or unrealistically intense. The blue genie was supposed to be a flashy, quick-witted character so Williams' voice and mannerisms were perfect.

I didn't care for Jumanji at all.
It became very predictable, nothing but being chased by wild animals at every turn, which got old quickly.

I agree on the Mork observation.
I never got the humor in that at all!

I do enjoy his improv though.
SOme of the funniest times I've seen him was when he was a guest on Johnny Carson's show.

And those were what, 15, 20 years ago? "The Jerk" 25, maybe?

"Cheaper by the Dozen 2" and its ilk are what I'm talking about.

Agreed. That's one of the vinyls my friend has. The other is I believe, "Why Is There Air?"

Oh and I was wrong about how old these are -- not 30 years, mor like 40-45. But they do stand the test of time.

He was good in Death to smoochie also. But I think the point is that its ok to make fun of a conservative with a problem but with the libs don't think about it.

He's been doing the Mork and Mindy thing since forever. I am bored by him myself.

Totally agree! A big YAWN!

His schizo act alway struck me as the real thing, so I never found it funny. Oh well, I hope he gets himself straightened out.

To me, his ham-handed humor is not funny at all.

Different jokes for different folks, I guess.
