Acclaimed actor-comedian Robin Williams has checked himself into rehab to battle alcoholism.
According to "Access Hollywood," Williams' publicist announced the actor's decision to seek treatment.
"After 20 years of sobriety, Robin Williams found himself drinking again and has decided to take proactive measures to deal with this for his own well-being and the well-being of his family. He asks that you respect his and his family's privacy during this time. He looks forward to returning to work this fall to support his upcoming film releases."
No further details were made available.
Williams made his mark on the television sitcom "Mork and Mindy" before starring in a string of hit feature films, including "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Aladdin," "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Dead Poets Society."
He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1998 for the drama "Good Will Hunting."
Williams' recent roles include the hit family comedies "Robots" and "RV." He also starred in the thriller "The Night Listener" over the weekend, but the film faired poorly at the box office, opening in 10th place.

I also thought his "Elmer Fudd sings Bruce Springsteen" was great.

The only one of his films I liked was Mrs Doubtfire.
Never cared for Mork and Mindy, but both Williams and Paw Dawber went on to have very successful careers.
Supporter of the troops, but not the mission. Williams has been a leading Hollywood Bush basher and devout Clintonite.
I thought "Patch Adams" was good.
I also laughed a lot at "Good Morning Vietnam."
My prayers go with him. One of the most talented people on the face of the Earth...of course, I don't think I'd want to be locked in a room with him...
Robin WIlliams was truly creepy in that role. I did not like the movie, but he played the part very well.
Williams was good in concert, but the funniest guy I've ever heard live was Rodney Dangerfield. I never saw Berle. I've found most comedians are far funnier on stage than on television. At least, the ones I've seen are.
I remember reading once that Winters was his hero and the one comedian he most wanted to emulate.

LOL. Getting hung up on entertainer's substance abuse is like getting hung up on their political beliefs.
Who the hell cares? They're entertainers.

His forte is stand up, an IMPROV MASTER, although after his Bob Dole gimp arm routine, I no longer give him much attention.
He does do a good job entertaining our troops and for that he deserves credit!
He is a good actor but like you only ONE movie, Good Will Hunting, was a winner IMHO.
