World Terrorism: News, History and Research Of A Changing World #4.
National Review Online ^ | August 02, 2006 | Walid Phares on the Mideast

Tehran & Damascus Move to Lebanon Lebanon-born Walid Phares is a senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. Author of the recent book Future Jihad, he was also one of the architects of 2004’s United Nations resolution 1559, which called for the disarming of Hezbollah. NRO editor Kathryn Lopez recently talked to Phares about what’s going on in the Mideast, what happened to the Cedar Revolution, and this war we’re all in.

Kathryn Jean Lopez: What is “Future Jihad”? Are we seeing it in the Mideast now?

Walid Phares: “Future Jihad,” which has already begun, refers to a new and potent form of Islamic terrorism, characterized by a Khumeinist-Baathist axis. These are the two trees of jihadism, so to speak — the Salafism and Wahabism embodied in al Qaeda and the sort of jihadism led by Iran and also including Syria, Hezbollah, and their allies in Lebanon.

The alliance has not been in entire agreement as to strategy. The al Qaeda branch began its “Future Jihad” in the 1990s; its efforts culminated on 9/11 and have continued explosively since then. The international “Salafists” aimed at the U.S. in the past decade in order to strengthen their jihads on various battlefields (Chechnya, India, Sudan, Algeria, Indonesia, Palestine, etc.). “Weaken the resolve of America,” their ideologues said, “and the jihadists would overwhelm all the regional battlefields.”

As I argue in Future Jihad, bin Laden and his colleagues miscalculated on the timing of the massive attack against the U.S. in 2001. While they wounded America, they didn’t kill its will to fight (as was the case, for instance, in the Madrid 3/11 attacks). I have heard many jihadi cadres online, and have seen al Jazeera commentators on television, offering hints of criticism about the timing. They were blaming al Qaeda for shooting its imagined “silver bullet” before insuring a strategic follow up. But bin Laden and Zawahiri believe 9/11 served them well, and has put a global mobilization into motion. Perhaps it has, but the U.S. counter strategy in the Middle East, chaotic as the region currently appears, has unleashed counter jihadi forces. The jury is still out as to the time factor: when these forces will begin to weaken the jihadists depends on our perseverance and the public understanding of the whole conflict.

The other “tree” of jihadism, with its roots in Iran, withheld fire after 9/11. They were content to watch the Salafists fight it out with the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan and Iraq, not to mention within the West, as terror cells were hunted down. Ahmedinejad, Assad, and Nasrallah were analyzing how far the US would go, and how far the Sunnis and Salafis would go as well.

The fall of the Taliban and of the Baath in Iraq, however, changed Iran and Syria’s patient plans. The political changes in the neighborhood, regardless of their immediate instability, were strongly felt in Tehran and Damascus (but unfortunately not in the U.S., judging from the political debate here), and pushed the Khumeinists and the Syrian Baathists to enter the dance, but carefully. Assad opened his borders to the jihadists in an attempt to crumble the U.S. role in Iraq, while Iran articulated al Sadr’s ideology for Iraq’s Shiia majority.

A U.S.-led response came swiftly in 2004 with the voting of UNSCR 1559, smashing Syria’s role in Lebanon and forcing Assad to withdraw his troops by April 2005. In response, the “axis” prepared for a counter attack on the Lebanese battlefield by assassinating a number of the Cedar Revolution leaders, including MP Jebran Tueni. In short, the attacks by Hamas and Hezbollah and the kidnappings of soldiers were the tip of an offensive aimed at drawing attention away from Iran’s nuclear weapons programs and Syria’s assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri. Hezbollah was awaiting its moment for revenge against the Cedar Revolution too.

What we see now is 1) a Syro-Iranian sponsored offensive aimed at all democracies in the region and fought in Lebanon; 2) Israel’s counter offensive (which it seems to have prepared earlier); and 3) an attempt by Hezbollah to take over or crumble the Lebanese government.

Lopez: So…did the Cedar Revolution fail?

Phares: Actually, it would be more accurate to say that the Cedar Revolution was failed. The masses in Lebanon responded courageously in March 2005 by putting 1.5 million people on the streets of Beirut. They did it without “no-fly-zones,” expeditionary forces, or any weapons at all, for that matter, and against the power of three regimes, Iran, Syria, and pro-Syrian Lebanon, in addition to Hezbollah terror. The “revolution” was for a time astoundingly successful; since then it has been horribly failed, and first of all by Lebanon’s politicians themselves. One of their leaders, General Michel Aoun, shifted his allegiances to Syria and signed a document with Hezbollah. Other politicians from the “March 14 Movement” then stopped the demonstrations, leaving them with the support of God knows what. They failed in removing the pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud and brought back a pro-Syrian politician to serve as a speaker of the house, Nabih Berri. Meanwhile, even as they were elected by the faithful Cedar Revolution masses, they engaged in a round table dialogue with Hezbollah, a clear trap set by Hassan Nasrallah: “Let’s talk about the future,” he said — with the implication, of course, that they forget about the Cedar Revolution and the militia’s disarming. While political leaders sat for months, enjoying the photo ops with Hassan Nasrallah, he was preparing his counter offensive, which he unleashed just a few days before the Security Council would discuss the future of Iran’s nuclear programs.

The Lebanese government of Prime Minister Seniora also abandoned the Cedar Revolution. His cabinet neither disarmed Hezbollah nor called on the U.N. to help in implementing UNSCR 1559. This omission is baffling. The government was given so much support by the international community and, more importantly, overwhelming popular support inside Lebanon: 80 percent of the people were hoping the Cedar Revolution-backed government would be the one to resume the liberation of the country. Now Hezbollah has an upper hand and the government is on the defensive.

The U.S. and its allies can be accused of certain shortcomings as well. While the speeches by the U.S. president, congressional leaders from both parties, Tony Blair, and Jacques Chirac were right on target regarding Lebanon, and while the U.S. and its counterparts on the Security Council were diligent in their follow up on the Hariri assassination and on implementing UNSCR 1559, there was no policy or plan to support the popular movement in Lebanon. Incredibly, while billions were spent on the war of ideas in the region, Lebanese NGOs that wanted to resume the struggle of the Cedar Revolution and fighting alone for this purpose were not taken seriously at various levels. Policy planners thought they were dealing with the “Cedar Revolution” when they were meeting Lebanon’s government and Lebanese politicians. The difference between the high level speeches on Lebanon and the laissez-faire approach from lower levels is amazing. Simply put, there was no policy on supporting the Cedar Revolution against the three regimes opposing it and the $400 million received by Hezbollah from Iran.

The Cedar Revolution was basically betrayed by its own politicians and is now essentially without a head. Nevertheless, as long as the international support remains, the Revolution will find its way and will face the dangers. The one and a half million ordinary citizens who braved all the dangers didn’t change their minds about Hezbollah’s terror. The resistance and counter-attack was to be expected. Unfortunately, thus far Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah have outmaneuvered the West and are at the throats of the Cedar Revolution. The international community must revise its plans, and, if it is strongly backed by the U.S. and its allies, including France, the situation can be salvaged. The good seeds are still inside the country.

Sheikh Gilani's American Disciples
What to make of the Islamic compounds across America affiliated with the Pakistani radical group Jamaat al-Fuqra?
by Mira L. Boland
03/18/2002, Volume 007, Issue 26

WALL STREET JOURNAL reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped when he went looking for the leader of a group called Jamaat al-Fuqra in the terrorist bazaar of Pakistan. At the time he disappeared, Pearl was tracking reports that Fuqra had hosted would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid at its walled compound in Lahore. In the end, it was agents of another group that spirited Pearl off to his death, but Fuqra remains a subject of interest, and not only because of its activities in Pakistan. For Fuqra has had a disturbing U.S. presence for more than 20 years. Today, half a dozen Fuqra residential compounds in rural hamlets across the country shelter hundreds of members, some of whom, according to intelligence sources, have been trained in the use of weapons and explosives in Pakistan.

Fuqra's founder and chief, the man Pearl sought to interview, is a rotund Kashmiri of Sufi background with long-standing ties to Pakistan's Interservice Intelligence Agency (ISI), Sheikh Mubarik Ali Hasmi Shah Gilani. At least until President Musharraf's decision last fall to support the American war on terrorism, the ISI sponsored terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir. Sheikh Gilani has rubbed shoulders at international terrorist confabs with gunslingers from Hamas and Hezbollah, their mullah backers, and Osama bin Laden. And he has trained fighters for the battlefields of Kashmir, Chechnya, and Bosnia.

Gilani launched his U.S. operations in 1980. Within ten years, Fuqra's communes were billing themselves as havens where Muslim converts--many of them inner-city blacks, sometimes recruited in prison--could build new lives. At least seven such communities are active today, in Hancock, N.Y.; Red House, Va.; Tulare County, Calif.; Commerce, Ga.; York, S.C.; Dover, Tenn.; and Combermere, Canada. While some of these enclaves contain only rudimentary buildings and trailers, the California compound has 300 residents on a 440-acre spread, according to a recent report by a local ABC station. Residents deny any involvement with terror, but Fuqra has a history of getting into trouble with the law.

Over the years, at least a dozen Fuqra members have been convicted of crimes including conspiracy to commit murder, firebombing, gun smuggling, and workers' compensation fraud in the United States or Canada. And Fuqra members are suspects in at least 10 unsolved assassinations and 17 firebombings between 1979 and 1990. Nor is Fuqra's criminal activity all in the past. In the last year alone, a resident of the California compound was charged with first degree murder in the shooting of a sheriff's deputy; another was charged with gun smuggling; the state of California launched an investigation into the fate of more than a million dollars in public funds given to a charter school run by Fuqra leaders; and two residents of the Red House community were convicted of firearms violations, while a third awaits trial.

Harder to document publicly but affirmed by several investigators and intelligence sources are the group's continuing links with guerrilla training in Pakistan. But then elusiveness is the order of the day for an organization whose members are well versed in the use of aliases; whose structure, shrouded behind front groups, is a network of safe houses and cells; and whose founder and members consistently maintain that it doesn't exist.

SHEIKH GILANI found his first American recruits by raiding the ranks of an existing American Muslim organization, the Dar ul Islam. At a Brooklyn mosque, Gilani, sporting ammunition belts, preached Islam as the path to a better life and called for fighters to join the holy war against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Under the guise of studying Islam, some of his followers were initiated into the international Islamist movement. Their campaign of crime on U.S. soil began almost at once.

As befits Gilani's close ties to Kashmir and the ISI, Fuqra's early targets in North America were ethnic Indians and sites linked to Indian sects. Thus, in July 1983, Stephen Paul Paster, a ranking member of Fuqra and one of its few whites, blew off most of one hand while planting a pipe bomb at a Portland, Ore., hotel owned by followers of the late guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. At the time Fuqra's principal bombmaker, Paster escaped from a hospital and remained on the lam for two years. After police caught up with him at a Fuqra house in Colorado, Paster served 4 years of a 20-year prison sentence for the bombing. He was suspected but not charged in two other bombings in Seattle in 1984 while he was a fugitive, the bombings of the Vedanta Society temple and the Integral Yoga Society building. Paster now lives in Lahore, where U.S. intelligence sources say he provides explosives training to visiting Fuqra members.

Shortly after the hotel bombing in Portland, two Fuqra members allegedly murdered Dr. Mozaffar Ahmad, a leader of the minority Ahmadiyyah Islamic sect in Canton, Mich. Both suspects died in a fire they had set at the Ahmadiyyah mosque in nearby Detroit, but the weapon used to murder Ahmad was found with their bodies. No one was ever charged in a triple slaying on August 1, 1984, but police suspect Fuqra. The victims were Lela Nevaskar, an Indian national who was in the United States as part of a government-sponsored health project, and her sister and brother-in-law. The three were murdered in a suburb of Tacoma, Wash., during a spate of firebombings of Hindu and Hare Krishna temples in Seattle, Denver, Philadelphia, and Kansas City, Mo. Police found news reports of the Tacoma murders from Seattle papers among Fuqra files seized in a later case.

FUQRA'S violence gained wider public notice in 1989, when police, seeking evidence in a series of thefts, searched a storage locker in Colorado Springs. They found a remarkable trove of armaments and documents, with multiple links to Fuqra.

Among the handguns, semi-automatic firearms, more than 30 pounds of explosives, pipe bombs, and bomb components were several bombs of an unusual design identical to that of a device recovered from the firebombed Hare Krishna temple in Denver. There was a large photo of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the blind cleric who would be convicted in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and target silhouettes labeled FBI Anti-Terrorist Team, Zionist Pig, Delta Team, and SAS (British Special Air Service), on which were found the fingerprints of James Donald Williams, Fuqra chief for Colorado, and the handwriting of Vincente Rafael Pierre (of whom more later). There were blank birth certificates, Social Security cards, and several sets of Colorado driver's licenses bearing identical photos but various names.

Among the documents were agreements signed by Fuqra members. They promised to tithe to the organization and to further contribute to the purchase of weapons and land. Those receiving welfare "pledged" to contribute either 75 percent or 100 percent of their welfare checks and food stamps. And they stated, "I, too, am willing to be used as a channel through which kuffar [infidel] monies are contributed toward the building of an Islamic town and other allied cities and/or programmes outside the continental United States, as well." Individuals selected to live on compounds agreed to "abide by the law and discipline of Jamaatul Fuqra."

Several documents described the activities and code of the "Muhammad Commandos of Sector 5," who apparently met for training in weapons, hand-to-hand combat, intelligence gathering, explosives, incendiaries, and booby traps, according to Susan M. Fenger, then chief criminal investigator of the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, who handled the case. And a document headed "Incogs" instructed commandos on ways of blending in with infidels while on an operation.

Finally, the locker yielded what Fenger termed "targeting packets" on potential targets and victims in Los Angeles, Arizona, and Colorado. These included maps of oil and gas fields and electrical facilities, notes on cell phone sites and repeaters, references to the U.S. Air Force Academy and other military locations, and lists of people in 12 states and Canada with Jewish or Hindu-sounding names. A trove of targeting packets tied followers of Gilani to the firebombings of the Hare Krishna temples in Denver and Philadelphia.

One of the packets outlined a murder plot that hadn't yet unfolded--but soon did. The target was a rival imam in Tucson, Rashad Khalifa. Alarmed by interior and exterior surveillance photographs of the cleric's mosque and a four-page handwritten murder plan, Colorado Springs police notified authorities in Tucson, who warned Khalifa he was a marked man. A week later, on January 31, 1990, assailants stabbed Khalifa 19 times. The murder was "a carbon copy of the handwritten plan," said Colorado assistant attorney general Doug Wamsley. The scheme called for attacking Khalifa in the mosque's kitchen at night, proceeding by "the quietest method feasible: knife, garrot [sic]," and eliminating any witnesses. Khalifa apparently had angered Fuqra when he preached that the Quran was written by man, not God.

No one was charged with murder in Khalifa's death, but eventually two Fuqra members, James Donald Williams and Nicolas Edward Laurent Flinton, were charged with conspiracy to commit murder. A Colorado jury convicted Williams in October 1993, but he jumped bail just before sentencing and remained free until he was arrested in Lynchburg, Va., in 2000; at the time Williams was living at the Fuqra compound in Red House. Flinton also fled; arrested in 1996 at a Fuqra community in South Carolina, he pleaded guilty and is currently in prison appealing his 22-year sentence.

FUQRA terrorism in North America appears to have peaked in the early 1990s. In 1991, luck derailed Fuqra plans to bomb an Indian movie theater and a Hindu temple near Toronto. Five men were arrested at the Niagara Falls border crossing after U.S. Customs agents searched their cars and found photographs, floor plans, and videotapes of the interiors of the targets, details of "recon team," "guard team," and "hit team" roles, and a description of how "time delay" bombs could be placed below the cinema floor. A second document stated that targeting a Hindu temple would "allow for total focus on the Hindus without any other party being involved in the fallout." A Canadian jury convicted three American Fuqra members of "conspiracy to commit mischief endangering life." A fourth suspect, Max Lon Fongenie, who had come to Canada from Pakistan shortly before the plot was set in motion, fled back to Pakistan after his co-conspirators' arrest, according to evidence presented at the trial.

By this time, Fuqra was often operating under the cover of two front groups, "Muslims of the Americas" and Sheikh Gilani's "Quranic Open University." On its incorporation papers, the open university portrayed itself as a religious, charitable, and educational institution dedicated to home study and public awareness of the Quran. But Gilani's own writings and statements exposed the militant mission behind this fa ade.

Thus, works by the sheikh published by the Quranic Open University and seized in a 1991 investigation instructed his followers that their "foremost duty" was "to wage Jihad" against the oppressors of Muslims. One of Gilani's poems is entitled "We dhikr [pray] to the beat of a submachine gun." Another exhorts, "Come join my troops and army / Says our Sheikh Gilani / Prepare to sacrifice your head / A true believer is never dead / Say 'Victory is in the air' / The kafir's [infidel's] blood will not be spared."

Gilani's appearance in a recruitment video from this period (seized in 1992 and used in the Canadian trial) is in the same vein. The video shows mujahedeen types being trained in the use of firearms and explosives. Gilani, wearing a camouflage jacket over traditional Pakistani dress, declares: "We give [recruits] highly specialized training in guerrilla warfare. . . . We are at present establishing training camps. . . . You can easily reach us at Quranic Open University offices in upstate New York or in Canada or in Michigan or in South Carolina or in Pakistan. Wherever we are you can reach us."

Even more damning is footage filmed in December 1993 by the Canadian Broadcasting Company when it covered a major jihadist conclave in Khartoum. The meeting was sponsored by then-Sudanese strongman and terror impresario Hassan Abdullah al-Turabi. An urbane, Sorbonne-educated Islamic scholar, Turabi had engineered a strategic alliance among Sunni-dominated Sudan, Shiite Iran, and Pakistan. With funding and expertise from Iran, Turabi made his country the launching pad for the first attack on the World Trade Center.

Turabi also created the Popular Arab Islamic Conference (PAIC) as a vehicle for bringing together Sunni, Shiite, and secular, heretofore Marxist, terrorist groups. The 1993 PAIC conference in Khartoum was a who's who of Islamist terror. Mullahs from Iran and Afghanistan were there, along with delegates from Hamas, Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Two generals, one of them a former chief of the ISI, and an adviser to Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto led the Pakistani delegation. Osama bin Laden, not yet a kingpin but living in Sudan while developing the organization and funding for his nascent network, was there. So was Sheikh Gilani: Foreign journalists placed him in the company of an unnamed Pakistani general and another man they took to be an "ex"-Pakistani intelligence official. In the evening, large crowds regaled the assembled jihadists with chants of "Down, down USA! Down, down CIA!," and (in Arabic) "Death to the Jews!"

In an interview taped by the Canadian Broadcasting Company, Gilani acknowledged that one or two of the men charged in the Toronto bombing conspiracy had studied with him in Lahore. Nevertheless, he insisted that Fuqra does not exist and that he does not advocate violence. "Once [people] join our [Quranic Open] university," he said, "they become real good citizens. They stop smoking, they stop stealing, they stop living on welfare. That is what I teach them."

THAT BENIGN face is the one Gilani's current American followers seek to present to the world. Several Fuqra compounds boast signs at their gates for the Quranic Open University or Muslims of the Americas. Residents have told reporters they came seeking refuge from the mean streets. Law enforcement and intelligence sources, however, suggest the drop-off in Fuqra violence in recent years may be due to its sponsors' "tightening the leash" after the earlier attacks drew police scrutiny without advancing Islamist objectives. Fuqra's core of trained operatives in the United States, according to this view, have been directed to lie dormant until needed to support a "cost effective" strike.

Be that as it may, there are plenty of continuing grounds for concern. One is new evidence of misuse of public funds. The California Justice Department is investigating the finances of GateWay Academy Public Charter School. The academy's CEO and superintendent, Khadijah Ghafur, is also secretary of Muslims of the Americas and a member of the board of directors of the Quranic Open University. One of GateWay's 11 campuses is located at Baladullah, Fuqra's compound in Tulare County, in the foothills of the Sierras. GateWay cannot account for $1.3 million in state money, according to Jill Marmolejo, spokesman for the Fresno Unified School District, and is in default on another $1.8 million in loans. The school seemed poised to obtain greater public largesse--it submitted a $5.9 million budget to the board of education for fiscal 2002, apparently based on a wildly inflated student count (charter schools in California receive $4,600 per pupil)--but the district revoked its charter on January16.

This is reminiscent of an earlier Fuqra scam, the bilking of the Colorado workers' compensation fund in the early 1990s, for which several Fuqra members were jailed. Prosecutors showed that some $350,000 had been laundered through Professional Security International, a Fuqra security firm, and Muslims of the Americas. Investigator Susan Fenger says she tracked a portion of the funds through PSI to Fuqra couriers who traveled to Pakistan.

That security firm also served the purpose of enabling Fuqra members to obtain federal licenses to buy automatic weapons, according to Fenger. And it obtained bid packages from the Defense Department, the Veterans Administration, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Health and Human Services. It is hardly reassuring, then, that Fuqra currently maintains two security firms, Dagger Investigating Services and 786 Security Company, Inc., in Brooklyn, N.Y. Law enforcement sources suspect the group is continuing to launder funds through the firms for transfer to Gilani.

Then there are the recent weapons violations and other crimes. Ramadan Abdullah, charged in the shooting last August of a Fresno County deputy sheriff in the course of a burglary, had come to Baladullah from Hancock. James Hobson, another Baladullah resident, was arrested earlier last year by U.S. marshals and charged with smuggling guns between South Carolina and New York. Hobson, also known as Umar Abdussalam, is the son-in-law of Musa Abdussalam, an elder at Baladullah.

And at the Red House commune--whose origins go back to 1993, after Fuqra abandoned its Buena Vista, Co., location in the wake of conspiracy convictions--agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms made three arrests last fall. They charged Vincente Rafael Pierre and his wife Traci Elaine Upshur after she made "straw purchases" of .45 caliber handguns that her husband had selected. As a felon (he pleaded guilty in the workers' compensation scam), Pierre is not allowed to own firearms. A jury convicted both. A third Red House resident, Abdullah Ben Benu, is scheduled for trial in April for illegally transporting ammunition for AK-47 automatic rifles. Here, again, a trail leads back to Pakistan: The woman who raised Ben Benu is living in Lahore, according to law enforcement sources, with bombmaker Stephen Paul Paster.

The ATF had the Red House colony under surveillance for a couple of years before making last fall's arrests. After September 11, authorities decided to move without further delay. At a bond hearing for Vincente Pierre on September 28, 2001, ATF Special Agent Thomas P. Gallagher told the court: "Individuals from the organization are trained in Hancock, N.Y., and if they pass the training in Hancock, N.Y., are then sent to Pakistan for training in paramilitary and survivalist training by Mr. Gilani. . . . We have information from an informant that one individual [from Red House] did further his training by going to Afghanistan."

And apparently the travel isn't all one way. At the same hearing, Pierre testified that Red House has hosted "many Muslims . . . from Pakistan, Arabic." Pakistan, of course, isn't an Arab country, but plenty of Arabs have gone there to learn to use a gun.

There is no ironclad evidence that Fuqra's American members today are part of the international conspiracy that threatens us. Rather, the ties are circumstantial and suggestive. What should be made, for example, of the fact that several weekend residents of Fuqra's headquarters compound at Hancock work during the week as toll collectors at New York City bridges and tunnels--considering that the 1993 World Trade Center bombers had plans to blow up the George Washington Bridge and Hudson River tunnels? We also know that in the early 1990s Gilani's U.S. recruits signed an oath saying, "I shall always hear and obey, and whenever given the command, I shall readily fight for Allah's sake." At the least, it is clear that Daniel Pearl was digging into a very interesting story.

The Investigation Continues: Jamaat ul Fuqra: The Founder
Imam Mubarik Ali Shah Gilani

The investigation into terror group Jamaat ul Fuqra is continuing by The Canadian Sentinel as well as by CP and the Northeast Intelligence Network.
Today I happened to be just browsing casually amongst some links I had discovered via Google yesterday. I thought I'd share a little bit right now.
I must confess that, although a Christian (Catholic) myself, I really don't know the content of the Holy Bible as do some, like Jack Van Impe (for whom I have great respect, as he also understands the nature and magnitude of the threat to the free world posed by terrorism and isn't afraid to express his opinion thereof). I'm not exactly a "practicing" type myself, but I'm nevertheless proud of my Christian heritage, as I have great respect for the religion and can see how Christianity has greatly contributed positively to human civilization over the centuries and has even provided the basis for the Constitution of the United States, which itself is something to be admired. Christianity also is the true original foundation of modern society in terms of its fundamental values. Some will certainly disagree with this statement; let them, for freedom of expression stems from the values of Christianity itself as far as I'm concerned.
But I came upon this and then became suspicious. I'm no expert on the Bible, but the claims made by Imam Mubarik Ali Shah Gilani, the founder of JuF, with respect to Christianity sounded strange and I wonder if they're false; if he is purporting, as a Muslim and not a Christian, to declare what is and isn't true about Jesus and others of the Christian history. Below, I'll excerpt examples from the document, Greeting to Our Christian Brethren, from the website, http://www.holyislamville.org (check it out; there're links all over the place which make me wonder, like the claim that a visitor to the organization was cured of cancer, but the link is "under construction"... sounds a lot like a cult to me).
Gilani refers to Jesus in the following manner:

...Jesus, son of Mary, the second Last Messenger of Islam...

This is the first thing he wrote that raised a troubling red flag for me. He seems to be implying that Jesus was a Muslim! Never have I ever heard of Jesus being a Muslim, so perhaps someone who would know the truth would kindly advise...

...so called followers of Jesus are involved in committing adultery, perversion, drinking, and gambling...

Well, I won't take issue that there are indeed many Christians who are involved in these vices, but, who is he, a Muslim, one of the folks who become (sometimes murderously) extremely angry when it is pointed out that there are a lot of Muslims everywhere who believe in and even practice terrorism? Hell, simply draw a picture or cartoon of Mohammed and some actually want to chop off your head! I would expect if giving Christians a "greeting", he wouldn't be speaking so boldly of these vices lest he upset Christians just as Muslims get upset at any kind of criticism at all, particularly the factual observation that most terrorists are Muslims; not all, but most. Perhaps it's more of a blatant offense than a greeting, which he calls it?

Today priests or devils have legalized what he forbade but they could not save mankind from the evil consequence of sins such as AIDS, mental disease, murders, earthquakes and tornados!

With the exception of his shockingly declaring mental disease a "sin", I don't argue with most of the rest of the statement. But what is completely unacceptable and offensive to all Christians is his using the words "priests or devils" in such a manner as to pejorate priests as devils. If we Christians were to say, "Imams or devils", would we get away with it? Really, semantically, it's obvious he's saying that he'll use either term to describe priests. Unacceptable. This man doesn't sound respectful at all, and this is logically a red flag. For those who disagree with this analysis, think about what would happen if a Christian conservative were to use the phrase "homosexuals or devils". You know there's always hell to pay for such phrases.

The priests of his time were not different from Gene Robinson, Jimmy Swaggart and James Baker. They invented lies and falsehood against the Almighty and Jesus son of Mary; they incorporated heathen mythology and paganism in the
Gospel and made him the “son of god” and invented the fable of dying on the cross for mankind. I quote Thomas Paine, a great thinker and moralist who arrived at the following conclusion when he used reason to under the Bible. “The Bible and Testament are impositions upon the world… the account of Jesus Christ being the son of God and his dying to appease the wrath of God and of salvation by that strange means are all fabulous inventions dishonorable to the wisdom and power of the Almighty. That the one true religion is . . . the belief of one God.” (Age of Reason, by
Thomas Paine)

You be the judge of that. Myself, I say that this man, a Muslim, a very reasonably suspected leader of a terrorist training camp, has no business speaking to Christians this way; if a Christian spoke in such a manner to him, how the would he feel? Perhaps he'd order one of his minions to behead the individual? The sheer nerve of this pretentious criminal/terrorist organization leader! Quoting some author's opinion doesn't make it acceptable to make the slur himself! He says the crucifiction is a lie. He should stick to his own religion and shut up just as he would expect non-Muslims to shut up about his. This man certainly should be considered a dangerous threat; after all, he founded a criminal/terror organization!

It is ironic to observe that, despite the fact the Jews tried to murder Jesus son of Mary, and the so-called church, raised in his name, have no authentic evidence that (He) ever existed. Our Holy Quran is the only evidence of the existence
of Jesus, his mission and his raising up alive of the Almighty.

Notice that he accused the Jews of trying to murder Jesus? If this isn't an incitement to the Jews and Christians to become enraged from this slur on the Judeo-Christian people, then cartoons of Mohammed are, what, nothing at all? What an anti-Semite as well as an Anti-Christ! I would furthermore say to him given the chance: "Guess what? There's no authentic evidence that Mohammed ever existed". And what's up with his phrase, "so-called church"? How about we start saying "So-called Mosques"? And how about his claim that only the Quran is evidence of Jesus and what he did? I doubt this, even though I didn't read either texts. Still, he's merely preaching Islamic dogma. Did this actually come from the Quran or was it made up by dishonest Islamofascists?
Near the bottom is the line:

Contact the International Quranic Open University branch nearest you:

And three addresses, including the terror training camp in Hancock. The others might ring a bell with watchers of terrorism. If so, don't hesitate to let me know. Links are always welcome.
In closing this post, I would contend that the words he wrote in his so-called "greeting" to Christians are no less offensive than the cartoons of Mohammed which have been leveraged by Islamofascists across the planet to incite their brethren to extreme violence. The whole "greeting" is nothing but an arrogant affront to Christianity. This man is obviously one to watch closely. Talk about "hidden agendas", eh?
This is the founder of Jamaat ul Fuqra. This post was intended to expose some of his attitude towards non-Muslims. I myself find his attitude troubling, especially when combined with the facts unearthed in the investigation by CP and the NIN.

The Pakistani terrorist group Jamaat ul Fuqra is using Islamic schools in the United States as training facilities, confirms a joint investigative report by an intelligence think tank and an independent reporter.

A covert visit to an encampment in the Catskill Mountains near Hancock, N.Y., called "Islamberg" found neighboring residents deeply concerned about military-style training taking place there but frustrated by the lack of attention from federal authorities, said the report by the Northeast Intelligence Network, which worked with an Internet blogger, "CP," to publish an interim report.

The neighbors interviewed, who asked not to be identified, said they feared retaliation if they were to make a report to law enforcement officials.

"We see children – small children run around over there when they should be in school," one neighbor said. "We hear bursts of gunfire all of the time, and we know that there is military-like training going on there. Those people are armed and dangerous."

The resident said his household gets "nothing but menacing looks from the people who go in and out of the camp, and sometimes they yell at us to mind our own business when we are just driving by."

"We don't even dare to slow down when we drive by," the resident said. "They own this mountain and they know it, and there is nothing we can do about it but move, and we can't even do that. Who wants to buy property next to that?"

Jamaat ul-Fuqra, or "community of the impoverished," was formed by Pakistani cleric Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani in New York in 1980. Gilani, who refers to himself as "the sixth Sultan Ul Faqr," has stated his objective is to "purify" Islam through violence.

Gilani also is the founder of a village in South Carolina called "Holy Islamville."

The encampment in Hancock, N.Y., is run by a front for Jamaat ul-Fuqra called Muslims of the Americas Inc., which operates a school known as the International Quranic Open University Inc.

The facility is on 70 acres of remote land on the western edge of the Catskill Mountains, about 40 miles southeast of Binghamton, N.Y. A sign at the entrance identifies the place as "Islamberg." The other side of the sign says "International Quranic Open University" and "Muslims of the Americas Inc."

Every one of the neighboring residents interviewed expressed disappointment and additional concern that federal law enforcement is not investigating the activities, the report said.

"These people need to be investigated," a resident said. "They are training for war, either for war here in this country or against our troops. Who in the h--- is allowing this stuff to happen right here in our own backyard, and why?"

Headquarters in the USA

Though primarily based in Lahore, Pakistan, Jamaat ul-Fuqra has operational headquarters in the U.S.

The group seeks to counter "excessive Western influence on Islam" through any means necessary, publicly embracing the ideology that violence is a significant part of its quest to purify Islam. The enemies of Islam, the group says, are all non-Muslims and any Muslim who does not follow the tenets of fundamentalist Islam as detailed in the Quran.

Jamaat ul-Fuqra openly recruits through various social service organizations in the U.S., including the prison system. Members live in compounds where they agree to abide by the laws of Jamaat ul-Fuqra, which are considered to be above local, state and federal authority.

According to the report, there appear to be more than two dozen "Jamaats," or private communities, loosely connected and scattered throughout the U.S. with an estimated 5,000 members.

An investigation of the group by the Colorado Attorney General's office in the early 1980s found several of the communities operate covert paramilitary training compounds, including one in a mountainous area near Buena Vista, Colo.

Muslims of the Americas Inc., a tax-exempt organization formed in 1980 by Gilani, has been directly linked by court documents to Jamaat ul-Fuqra. The organization operates communes of primarily black, American-born Muslims throughout the U.S. The investigation confirmed members commonly use aliases and intentional spelling variations of their names and routinely deny the existence of Jamaat ul-Fuqra.

Members have been known to go to Pakistan for paramilitary training, but the investigation found evidence the U.S. encampments offer such training so members don't need to risk traveling abroad amid increased scrutiny following the 9-11 attacks.

The report says Jamaat ul-Fuqra members have "purchased isolated rural properties in North America to live as a community, practice their faith, and insulate themselves from Western culture. The group has established rural encampments that U.S. authorities allege are linked to murder, bombings and other felonies throughout North America."

U.S. authorities have probed the group for charges ranging from links to al-Qaida to laundering and funneling money into Pakistan for terrorist activities. The organization supports various terrorist groups operating in Pakistan and Kashmir, and Gilani himself is linked directly to Hamas and Hezbollah. Throughout the 1980s, JF was responsible for a number of terrorist acts across the United States, including numerous fire-bombings.

Gilani was at one time in Pakistani custody for the abduction of American journalist Daniel Pearl. Intelligence sources have determined Pearl was attempting to meet with Gilani in the days before he disappeared in Karachi. Intelligence sources also suggest a link between Jamaat ul Fuqra and Richard Reid, the infamous "shoe bomber" who attempted to ignite explosives aboard a Paris-to-Miami passenger flight Dec. 22, 2001.

Field investigation

Douglas J. Hagmann, director of the Northeast Intelligence Network and multi-state licensed private investigator, and others conducted their covert field investigation Feb. 8 and 9 at the Hancock encampment connected to the terrorist group.

Primary access to the compound is an unmarked road – labeled on county and state maps as "Moslem Road"

Two structures with capacities of up to 100 each appear to be used for religious training, education and meeting purposes, according to local sources. Investigators found a weapons firing range that is not visible from the road or any other publicly accessible vantage position. It appeared to have been recently used.

Near the eastern perimeter of the property – on a hillside – appears to be a military-style training area, including ropes hung from tree limbs, an obstacle course, wooden fences for scaling and other items and structures one would expect to find in a "boot-camp" setting. The area also appeared to have been used recently.

The report noted the property is near the Cannonsville Reservoir and Watershed Area, one of several water supply sources servicing New York City and adjacent areas.

The investigators noted men appeared to be designated to provide security for the compound, with some posted at guard shacks.

"Although no activity of extreme significance was observed (the presence of armed sentries guarding the perimeter of the compound excluded) during this period of surveillance, it was obvious that measures to insure that the activities taking place at this location were well insulated from public view," the report said.

Investigators interviewed six area residents, who each requested anonymity for the report, and found them to be consistent. The report summarized the information:

* The encampment has been in operation for at least 20 years and appears to maintain a steady level of occupancy. Each source confirmed the existence of at least one armed guard at the main entrance, especially during "special events" that result in a significant number of visitors by vehicle. The events appear to be meetings or religious services held within the compound.

* Nearly every weekend, sound of gunfire can be heard from the camp. According to one neighbor who stated he's a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, some of the weapons obviously are "automatic" and large-caliber. On at least two occasions last summer, area residents heard small explosions.

* The occupants won't allow anyone not affiliated with their organization to enter the encampment. All of the residents stated they've never observed a marked law enforcement vehicle enter the compound at any time.

* Visitors to the compound are numerous and frequent. All visitors appear to be black males operating late model vehicles, mostly SUVs, and many possess license plates from Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee.

* At least once each week, private deliveries of unknown items are made to the camp by unmarked box-style trucks. The trucks, usually at the compound for two to three hours at a time, are operated by black males or men who appear to be of Middle Eastern origin.

* Men of Middle Eastern origin appear to be "frequent guests" of the encampment, many in traditional Islamic attire. Some appear to stay at the encampment for three to four days or longer. During the visits, activity and security at the compound is heightened noticeably.

The report also says it found that a number of the residents of the compound work for the New York State Thruway, as tollbooth operators in the New York City area or are employed at a nearby center that processes credit card transactions and maintains vital confidential financial records.

The report concludes additional investigation by law enforcement authorities is required.

"The appropriate action must be taken now to insure the safety and security of the United States, or it is certain that we will be forced to deal with the consequences. …"

U.S. terror group ignored amid raised threat?
Investigator says domestic cells involved in 9-11 still in business

Sheik Mubarak Gilani
Amid heightened security after Hezbollah threats and the foiled UK plot, an independent investigator of the Oklahoma City bombing contends a terrorist network allied with the Lebanese group and al-Qaida – allegedly responsible for more attacks on U.S. soil in the past 20 years than any other terrorist organization – remains a danger because of neglect by U.S. authorities.

Jamaat al-Fuqra, a Pakistani-based group with thousands of American members, has worked closely with Hezbollah, al-Qaida, Hamas and others on attacks in the U.S. – including the bombings of the World Trade Center in 1993, Oklahoma City's Murrah Federal Building in 1995 and the 9-11 attacks – but remains conspicuously absent from the State Department's terrorist list, asserts Oklahoma-based researcher Patrick Briley.

A former investigative aide to the late Adm. Hyman Rickover, Briley has poured himself into the Oklahoma City bombing case for the past decade, concluding the piles of evidence he has passed on to authorities through attorneys clearly points to the controversial conclusion Islamic terrorists used Americans Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols to carry out the plot.

Al-Fuqra, he says, is a key part of an Oklahoma City terrorist network that has participated in major attacks in the U.S. – and most importantly – remains in operation today.

Last month, the FBI said it stepped up its monitoring of Hezbollah operations in the U.S. after the terrorist group issued threats against American interests. But Briley insists that is a "hollow claim," charging the agency is "not doing enough to stop Hezbollah's protected helper in the U.S., al-Fuqra."

Responding to Briley's charge, FBI spokesman Stephen Kodak Jr. did not specifically elaborate on al-Fuqra but said counterterrorism is "the FBI's number one priority."

"The FBI takes all terrorism allegations extremely seriously," he said. "Each and every allegation with a terrorist nexus is fully investigated and run to its logical conclusion. Detecting and protecting Americans both in the U.S. and abroad against terrorists and acts of terrorism is our number one goal."

State Department spokeswoman Rhonda Shore, who handles counterterrorism issues, said she had not heard of al-Fuqra. Shore said she would try to find out why the terrorist group is not on the State Department's list, but she did not reply before press time.

Middle East analyst Daniel Pipes called al-Fuqra an extremely dangerous and "chilling organization" that has "operated below the radar for quite a few years."

Pipes, director of the Philadelphia-based Middle East Forum, told WND he could not speak to al-Fuqra's many alleged connections but agrees the group doesn't have the law enforcement attention it deserves.

Pipes said he thinks well of the FBI in terms of its classic criminal investigations, which it now applies to counterterrorism. But he is extremely critical of the agency as a political entity, pointing to "embarrassing" blunders. One example, he says is FBI chief Robert Mueller's overtures to the American Muslim Council's Abdurahman Alamoudi just months before the Islamic leader was arrested on terrorism-related charges.

The FBI's top brass, Pipes said, seems to have "no idea of the difference between a moderate and radical Muslim."

Joseph Bodansky, the former director of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, has affirmed al-Fuqra operations in the U.S. have been known to the FBI and CIA for more than two decades.

Al-Fuqra's founder and leader Sheik Mubarak Gilani, Briley points out, is a close associate of 9-11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohmmed, who sent convicted conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui to live with al-Fuqra member Melvin Lattimore and attend flight school in Norman, Okla.

Lattimore was involved directly in the 1993 World Trade Center and Oklahoma City bombings and the 9-11 attacks as an al-Fuqra member but is "walking the streets of America," Briley says.

Gilani at one time was in Pakistani custody for the abduction of American journalist Daniel Pearl. Intelligence sources determined Pearl was attempting to meet with Gilani in the days before he disappeared in Karachi and later was beheaded. Intelligence sources also suggest a link between al-Fuqra and Richard Reid, the infamous "shoe bomber" who attempted to ignite explosives aboard a Paris-to-Miami passenger flight Dec. 22, 2001.

Beltway sniper John Muhammad also has been tied to al-Fuqra, and Briley says there is a lot of circumstantial evidence that links the group to Oklahoma University bomber Joel Hinrichs.

Briley says the upcoming congressional hearings into a possible foreign terrorist connection to the Oklahoma City bombing – spearheaded by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif. – is an opportunity to spotlight the activities of al-Fuqra in the U.S. and find out why the group has been kept off the U.S. State Department Terror list.

"There is a great lack of confidence that the FBI and Department of Justice leadership and supervisors in D.C. will adequately handle this Oklahoma terror network information, since they have been aware of it for two decades and still have not done the right thing," Briley said.

Briley says Bodansky, in his role as Congress's counterterrorism source, made Rohrabacher aware of al-Fuqra's terrorist activities and believes there was a Muslim connection to the Oklahoma City.

Al-Fuqra has more than two dozen "Jamaats," or private communities, loosely connected and scattered throughout the U.S. with an estimated 5,000 members.

As WorldNetDaily reported, the group is using Islamic schools in the United States as training facilities, including an encampment in the Catskill Mountains near Hancock, N.Y., called "Holy Islamberg." According to an investigative report, neighboring residents were deeply concerned about military-style training taking place there and frustrated by an apparent lack of attention from federal authorities.

The terrorist group seeks to counter "excessive Western influence on Islam" through any means necessary, publicly embracing the ideology that violence is necessary to purify Islam. The enemies of Islam, the group says, are all non-Muslims and any Muslim who does not follow the tenets of fundamentalist Islam as detailed in the Quran.

Many of its attacks in the 1980s, in fact, targeted Islamic sects as well as other minority religious groups.

Al-Fuqra openly recruits through various social service organizations in the U.S., including the prison system. Members live in compounds where they agree to abide by the laws of Jamaat al-Fuqra, which are considered to be above local, state and federal authority.

The group has been known to recruit disaffected young men to carry out U.S. terror attacks, including blacks, white supremacists, illegal immigrants and Native Americans as well as inmates.

MEDIA MATTERS
Saudi says he nixed Fox News 'Muslim riots' banner
Shareholding prince claims change made
after he called Rupert Murdoch

Prince al-Walid bin Talal
A Saudi prince who owns shares of the Fox News Channel claims he persuaded network chief Rupert Murdoch to change a screen banner during a broadcast that identified the recent unrest in France as "Muslim riots."

Speaking on a panel at the Arab and World Media Conference in Dubai Monday, billionaire Prince al-Walid bin Talal criticized U.S. media for being generally "pro-Israel" and said Arabs are not doing enough to counter that, according to Middle East Online.

The prince then pointed to his own experience as an example of what can be done.

During the violent street protests in France one month ago, the prince said, Fox News ran a banner at the bottom of the screen that said "Muslim riots."

Rupert Murdoch

"I picked up the phone and called Murdoch ... [and told him] these are not Muslim riots, these are riots out of poverty," al-Walid said.

"Within 30 minutes, the title was changed from Muslim riots to civil riots."

Asked by WorldNetDaily to respond, Fox News Channel spokeswoman Irena Briganti said she was not aware of any phone call from the prince but acknowledged the network changed the banner after receiving complaints.

"We had several calls from people around the world and discovered the issue was a little more complicated than how it was being characterized," she said.

The unrest, which eventually spread to neighboring countries, began Oct. 27 with thousands of mostly French Muslims in impoverished Paris suburbs engaging in violent clashes with police as they torched cars and buildings. After 20 nights, French officials gave a count of 8,973 vehicles burned, 2,888 arrests and 126 officers injured.

Analysts pointed to many factors behind the riots – including poverty, France's immigration and integration policies and French attitudes toward minorities.

But some, including frequent Fox News contributor Daniel Pipes, saw a connection to the Islamist goal of gaining a foothold in Europe in its global jihad.

"The great majority of Muslims in Europe see themselves as bearers of a superior civilization and see themselves growing prodigiously," Pipes told WND in an interview during the riots. "Through a cultural, religious and demographic confidence they feel scorn towards European ways and conspire to take it over."

Pipes, director of the think tank Middle East Forum, was appointed by President Bush to the board of the United States Institute of Peace despite the protest of many Islamic groups, which claim he unfairly paints Muslims in broad strokes.

Al-Walid, who drew international attention when his gift for 9-11 relief was rejected by New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, said in a CNBC interview in September that he owned a 5.5 percent voting stake in News Corp., Murdoch's parent company.

The prince said, at the time, he was willing to increase his share in order to prevent a takeover by rival Liberty Media.

"Clearly, this is something we will not accept, because we are very happy as shareholders with what Mr. Murdoch is doing," the prince said.

Company sources, according to CNBC, said the Saudi prince has long been regarded by Murdoch as an ally in his showdown with Liberty Media owner John Malone.

Al-Walid visited the site of the World Trade Center one month after Sept. 11, 2001, and presented Giuliani with a $10 million donation to a relief fund, calling the terrorist attack "a tremendous crime."

But in a written statement issued by his publicist during the visit, the prince declared:

"At times like this one, we must address some of the issues that led to such a criminal attack. I believe the government of the United States of America should re-examine its policies in the Middle East and adopt a more balanced stance toward the Palestinian cause."

An angered Giuliani returned the donation.

A few days later, the prince blamed the mayor's decision on "Jewish pressures."

The prince reportedly gave half a million dollars to the controversial U.S. Muslim lobby group Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, in 2002 for a campaign to defend Islam in U.S. society, according to ArabicNews.com.

The donation, given to Executive Director Nihad Awad during a visit to Saudi Arabia, helped buy a collection of Islamic books for 3,000 public libraries in the U.S. The contribution also financed a media campaign in the U.S. for CAIR, which was founded as a spin-off of the Islamic Association for Palestine, identified by two former FBI counterterrorism chiefs as a "front group" for Hamas.

An estimated 80 percent of U.S. mosques are supported largely with funds and imams from Saudi Arabia, where the strict Wahhibist interpretation of Islam dominates the kingdom.

As WorldNetDaily reported, the Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings in October in response to a yearlong study by a Washington human-rights group asserting the government of Saudi Arabia is disseminating propaganda through American mosques that teaches hatred of Jews and Christians and instructs Muslims that they are on a mission behind enemy lines in a land of unbelievers.

In March, 15 senators, including Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., responded to the report by the Center for Religious Freedom at Freedom House with a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice demanding the Bush administration take stronger action against Riyadh.

If you'd like to sound off on this issue, please take part in the WorldNetDaily poll.

FROM WND'S JERUSALEM BUREAU
Hezbollah claims spies inside Israeli intelligence
Agents said passing information on rocket targets, military installations

JERUSALEM – Hezbollah has a vast network of spies operating inside Israel, providing the organization with information on rocket targets, military installations and sensitive industrial sites, such as chemical plants, according to a Palestinian newspaper affiliated with the Islamic Jihad terror group.

The newspaper, Palestine Today, quoted what it said was a Hezbollah source in Beirut claiming Hezbollah has infiltrated Israeli intelligence agencies and knows "every inch" of the Jewish state.

"The places we chose to hit with the rockets are decided upon according to information our agents give us and keep on giving us," the Hezbollah source was quoted as saying. "We have information about every inch inside Israel, including places where the army keeps its weapons, especially chemical weapons and explosives."

"We have a very developed network of spies that can give the organization (Hezbollah) all it wants inside Lebanon and Israel. This system is based on people working deep inside Israel very secretly, including members in the Israeli intelligence agencies," the source claimed.

Palestine Today is known to be affiliated with Islamic Jihad, which Israel says works closely with Hezbollah and receives funding from the Lebanese terror group.

Israeli intelligence officials tell WND they are "very aware" of a possible Hezbollah spy network currently inside Israel and have been working to crack it. They also say they don't discount Palestine Today's claims Hezbollah has spies inside the Israeli intelligence community. An Israeli Arab military officer previously was convicted of spying for Hezbollah.

The Palestinian newspaper interview comes one day after Israel revealed it arrested an Israeli Arab it suspects of spying for Hezbollah, accusing him of passing to the terror group information on troop movements and rocket landings during the Jewish state's current military campaign in Lebanon.

It also follows a WND exclusive interview earlier this week with a senior terror leader here who said Hezbollah has an advanced spy network operating inside Israel consisting of "tens" of agents, mostly Arab-Israelis who provide the Lebanon-based terror group with strategic information such as rocket targets and locations of military installations.

In Israel this week, the Nazareth District Court received a charge sheet against Riyad Mzarib, 30, a Bedouin Arab from an Israeli village in the Jezreel Valley, accusing him of conspiring to assist Hezbollah during wartime, holding contacts with the terror group and delivering to them strategic information in exchange for participation in a drug ring.

According to an Israeli police commander, Mzarib confessed to having delivered to Lebanese representatives reports on the movements of Israeli Defense Forces and the location of Hezbollah missile hits in the north. He was arrested July 21, nine days after the war broke out here.

Since Israel started its military campaign in Lebanon last month following a Hezbollah attack, the Lebanese militia has fired more than 3,400 rockets into northern Israeli cities, including into Haifa, the country's third largest. About one-third of the Israeli population is under rocket threat. Fifty-one Israelis have been killed so far by Hezbollah rocket attacks.

While Hezbollah projectiles lack guidance systems, the rockets are launched from specific areas in Lebanon using a rocket's known trajectory and travel distance to score hits on particular Israeli sites.

Israeli security officials say they have been surprised by the accuracy of Hezbollah's rocket attacks. Several Katyushas have scored direct hits on Israeli military installations and other strategic facilities. Last weekend, 12 Israeli soldiers were killed and another 12 were wounded by a Hezbollah rocket attack on a military post at Kfar Giladi in the Upper Galilee.

In a WND interview this week, Abu Oudai, a chief of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group's rocket infrastructure in the West Bank, said Hezbollah has tens of agents in Israel that provide it "with the information it needs."

"[Hezbollah] receives extremely high-quality information from their agents inside Palestine," Abu Oudai said. "We are talking about detailed maps of neighborhoods, locations of military bases and regular information every day from many sources to help the heroes (Hezbollah) fire rockets more accurately into [northern Israel]."

He said after rocket attacks, Hezbollah agents send the terror group information on hits and misses.

The Al Aqsa Brigades, the declared "military wing" of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party, is responsible for scores of shooting attacks, rocket launchings and, together with Islamic Jihad, every suicide bombing inside Israel the past two years.

Israel says senior Brigades leaders, particularly the group's cell in Nablus in the northern West Bank, coordinate their attacks with Hezbollah and receive funding from Iran and Syria funneled through Hezbollah channels. Several Brigades leaders have spoken openly to WorldNetDaily about their group's affiliation with Hezbollah.

At least 12 suspected Hezbollah agents have been arrested in Israel the past year, including Jasaan Athamleh, leader of an Arab-Israeli political coalition. Athamleh was arrested seven months ago along with his brother and is thought to be a senior Hezbollah agent. It recently was revealed a Canadian professor accused of spying for Hezbollah was arrested here just before fighting broke out July 12.

In 2002, Israel convicted a Druze Arab IDF lieutenant-colonel of spying for Hezbollah in exchange for money and drugs. Prosecutors said the officer provided Hezbollah with intelligence about army movements, details of weak spots along the Israeli border and a map of Tel Aviv identifying gas and electrical depots.

Security sources say they suspect most Hezbollah agents operating here are Arab-Israeli. They say Hezbollah's most successful recruiting ground is Mecca, where Arab-Israelis travel for the pilgrimage there required by Islam. While Saudi Arabia does not admit Israelis, Arab-Israelis can travel to Jordan where they turn in their passports temporarily for a Jordanian passport voucher they can use to enter Saudi Arabia.

The sources said Israeli Hezbollah agents receive advanced training by Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guard members.

"Hezbollah, with the help of Iran, works like the army of a sovereign country," said a security official. "This includes the recruitment and development of spy networks."

Thanks for the 'attaboy'. Here's another pair I can't recall posting:

Colonel Vladimir Borisovich Korablev and his daughter Natalya

The sad news of the death of Volodya Korablev and his daughter Natasha in the theatrical center on Dubrovka left shaken all who knew and loved this intelligent, educated, and hospitable Russian fellow.

I happened to work with him in Africa and France. He was a very open and frank officer, despite his special responsibilities. His affability completely destroyed the axiom of the swaggering and inaccessible Soviet-Russian diplomat, and even more so the anecdotal military man of the Soviet era.

Volodya spoke a minimum of five languages, and was very well read. He also had a dee appreciation and love of the arts. He knew to meet and regard people not by the clothes they wore, but by their character, and he was drawn to people without regards for his own self-interest, but just in search of interesting and pleasant human contact.

Volodya was a religious officer. He was well known in his parish in the Paris suburb of Vanve, at the Holy Trinity, Holy Martyrs, and Russian Confessors Orthodox church. He made an unconditional contribution to strengthen the authority of the cathedral and his parish, and Volodya enjoyed a long-lasting friendship with the church's former director.

Vladimir Borisovich attended 'Nord-Ost' with his wife Lena and daughter Natasha. When his son Daniel arrived at the hospital after the assault on the theater, only Lena remained among the living. It was a tremendous loss, since not long before this tragedy the family had suffered the deaths of Volodya's daughter in law and tiny grandson.

Colonel Korablev was a military attache in France and still had many friends in Paris and the rest of that country. I am now appealing to those friends of his who are perhaps reading these lines. Let us remember our dear friend and his daughter as martyrs. We lost Volodya, a man who decorated and ennobled this not so enjoyable existence of ours, an existence where a man who passed through the carnage of African flash points unscathed lost his life at the theater in his capital city.

Great read, makes me think I am not crazy...

IS THIS DANGER ALL IN YOUR HEADS?

By Dr. Laurie Roth Ph.D.
August 11, 2006
NewsWithViews.com

I had a caller last night who said that all of our problems in the US were of our own making. No outside group brought down the trade towers but……you know the rest. Either the Jews or President Bush brought down the towers…..and why? The Jews….. because that is simply the way Zionists are, evil and meddling…and Bush because he needed a reason to go to war and expand our empire. Oh….its starting to make sense to me now! Of course we would choose Afghanistan and Iraq to expand our power. After all, you can’t get prettier camels and sand then in Afghanistan.

Those are commodities we just can’t live without and Iraq……We all know the manipulative reason we are there…..to steal oil. Yes, it’s plainly written in our history. Just look at our behavior in the gulf war! We rescued Kuwait, and then started an emergency IV connected to all their oil….Suckers! Of course we welcomed this rescued country into our vampire haven of concubines. How stupid were we?! Didn’t we all know we were evil and needed to steal all their oil? What were we thinking? Well, at least we know the constant complaining about us persecuting the Muslim people has to be true. That is why went into Bosnia, Kosovo, Gulf War 1, Kuwait……and now…..look at us torturing and oppressing two other Muslim countries, Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe they want the acid baths back and their children thrown back in prison. Lets take back all our billions!

If you actually believe we were and are in the Middle East to rob countries of oil, then I’m curious as to what other history of our country are you planning to rewrite. According to a WorldNet Daily article, even a large Christian publisher has agreed to print the book by David Ray Griffin, where he attempts to expose the alleged plot by the Bush administration. “If we became convinced that the so-called war on terror is simply a pretext for enlarging the American empire, we have every reason as Christians to try and expose the truth behind 9/11.”

Lets follow the trail a bit and see if our track record reflects this kind of deceit and if indeed we have “invented” the enemy. We all know that the dozens of attacks against us by Fundamentalist Islamics since 1979 were staged. Even though the world witnessed the American Embassy in Tehran being seized, that was just photographic manipulation. Then there was that other fraud. The US Embassy attack where 63 were murdered. We all know they were all paid off and the media grabbed local corpses to show us. Then of course there were the 241 servicemen killed in Beirut. All you brilliant types know that they were all part of a suicide cult that planned to kill themselves.

Bringing just a few of these attacks more current…..I’m assuming it was a bunch of diseased grannies, secretly in love with Bush who entered the planes on 9/11 with the intent to crash them all. After all, steak wasn’t on sale that week and they were forced into drastic action.

Of all groups of people who should understand that evil is real, Christians should!! It is horrifying and quite astounding how some of you so quickly ignore the aggressive path of evil that each generation has had to face in our country. Instead, you jump on the drugged party wagon of conspiracies and invented wars. The ugly truth of the matter is we really have been under attack since at least 1979 by Islamic Extremists not the Republican Granny next door or Bush. I ask you “frothing at the mouth” Bush haters, what about all the attacks during the Carter, Reagan and Clinton years? Were they all secret American haters planning the big “James Bond” take over?

Only today we hear of the LARGE nightmare the British are uncovering with near plane attacks. They have raised the threat level to “critical” and red after recently arresting 21 people so far intent on blowing up planes. The aggressive and real evil continues to march against the west and Israel. Face it!

Let me pause here and give you a bone. I DO get the globalist agenda and the North American Union push. It is wrong for America and reflects a large “new world order agenda.” That is a push that many of our President’s, Carter, Clinton, Bush Senior etc… have been into. This whole worldview clash with our traditions and sovereignty is indeed banging against the global, share and share a like crowd. This battle will be fought for some time. However, that doesn’t mean for a second that our enemy isn’t real and that the attacks over decades now were all faked, especially, the big one on 9/11. With so many of our Presidents basically sleeping during the attacks since 79, we in affect strengthened the enemies resolve to go for yet a bigger target. It hit us on 9/11. They knew from past history we would talk a lot, see our lawyers, and then do basically little or nothing. However, this time they were wrong. Yet, it hasn’t taken long for the conspiratorial crowd, those who think the only evil is us, to invent the endless plots we are doomed by now.

Is it part of my imagination the endless and recent statements of nuclear threat by the President of Iran? We need not be afraid; he only thinks he is the hidden Imam and that he will be significant in ending Israel and us as a bonus. Just because he has been a terrorist in the past doesn’t mean he hasn’t reformed. After all, they are just pesky Jews. Israel must go and he will gladly help that process. Just because they have always been our loyal friend and are the only real democracy in the middle east, why should that matter?

No, our country isn’t perfect and yes there will always be things afoot that we must confront and scream about BUT……THIS IS A REAL WAR, REAL EVIL AND WE HAD BETTER FIND A WAY TO PULL TOGETHER RATHER THAN TAKE OUR HATE AND IGNORANCE AND FOCUS IT AGAIN AND AGAIN AT THE JEWS AND BUSH!!!

...Jesus, son of Mary, the second Last Messenger of Islam...

OOOOoooo Lord have mercy on our souls. All I can say and I find this is a big problem everywhere (even myself) Christians are NOT reading their bibles so they will not be deceived.

We hear so much all over the radio and tv about religion and most of it is bunk and the above is also.

There is more on radio and tv about Islam today than there is TRUE Bible Christianity.

Christan's read your bible for yourself. I have slacked lately myself. I was working on a chapter a day and must go back.

I tell my loved ones around me in everyday life, surly you don't want to get to heaven and not have read for yourself the bible, there may be a test!

NTSB Publishes Prelim On Oshkosh Ground Taxi Accident

It was about as tragic an accident as we have seen on Wittman Field,
Oshkosh, Wisconsin... but the NTSB has started shedding some light on
the
circumstances that surround this accident with the attached preliminary
report.

NTSB Identification: CHI06FA206A
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Sunday, July 30, 2006 in Oshkosh, WI
Aircraft: Grumman TBM-3, registration: N420GP
Injuries: 2 Uninjured.
This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain
errors.
Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has
been
completed.

On July 30, 2006, at 1207 central daylight time, a Grumman TBM-3,
Avenger,
N420GP, operated by the Tri-State Warbird Museum, sustained minor
damage
when it taxied into the empennage and fuselage of an amateur-built Vans
RV-6, C-FNQP. Both aircraft were taxiing for takeoff on Papa taxiway,
which
parallels runway 18 at the Wittman Regional Airport (OSH), Oshkosh,
Wisconsin. The passenger seated in the right seat of the RV-6 was
killed,
but the RV-6 pilot and the pilot and passenger of the Avenger were not
injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the
accident. The pilots and passengers of both aircraft had attended the
EAA
AirVenture Oshkosh 2006 air show and were departing OSH. The Avenger's
destination was Clermont County Airport, Batavia, Ohio. The RV-6's
destination was Gore Bay, Ontario, Canada. It is unknown if either
aircraft
had filed flight plans.

The RV-6 pilot reported that the RV-6 was parked on row 301 of the
homebuilt
aircraft parking area that was located just south of the P-1 taxiway.
The
RV-6 pilot reported that the airplane was pushed onto the P-1 taxiway
before
he started his engine. He taxied forward on the P-1 taxiway and was
directed
by the aircraft "marshallers" to taxi south on Papa taxiway. He
reported
that he was taxiing behind a green and white, high wing airplane that
had
TUNDRA painted on the top of the wing. He reported that a gray airplane
was
in front of the Tundra aircraft. The RV-6 pilot reported that he
"didn't
know the TBM was behind" his airplane. The RV-6 pilot reported that he
was
not sure if he was taxiing forward or if he was stopped when the
Avenger
struck the RV-6 from behind.

The Avenger pilot reported that the Avenger was parked in the Warbird
parking area located at the north end of the air show display area. The
Avenger pilot started the engine and let the engine warm up for about
five
minutes before he began to taxi. He taxied the airplane south toward
the P-1
taxiway. He observed the aircraft marshaller clear him to begin taxiing
on
Papa taxiway. The Avenger pilot reported that the airplane in front of
the
Avenger was a green and white, high wing airplane with TUNDRA written
on top
of the wing. He reported that he taxied at a very slow speed with the
propeller speed set about 800 RPM. He reported that the Avenger had no
mechanical defects and that the brakes were good. He reported that the
relatively narrow width of the taxiway prevented a large angular change
from
the taxiway centerline. He reported he made "shallow S-turns within the
confines of the taxiway width." The Avenger pilot reported that he
observed
the Tundra pilot taxi off the right side of the taxiway for some
unknown
reason. The Avenger pilot reported that he spotted the airplane that
was in
front of the Tundra airplane, and he stated that he had "100 yards of
free
pavement" in front of the Avenger. The Avenger pilot reported that when
he
heard the impact and saw debris flying, he shut down the engine. He
reported
that he never saw the airplane that he hit while he was taxiing.

The pilot of a Lancair airplane reported that he followed the Avenger
while
taxiing on Papa taxiway and he observed the Avenger taxi into the RV-6.
The
Lancair pilot reported that his airplane was parked in the homebuilt
aircraft parking area near the Lancair airplane exhibit area located
just
south of the P-1 taxiway. He reported that about six aircraft
marshallers
helped push his Lancair into a position near the Papa taxiway so that
he
could start his engine. He started his engine and was ready to taxi
onto the
Papa taxiway. One of the aircraft marshallers motioned to him that he
was
cleared to taxi onto Papa taxiway, since there was adequate separation
from
the next airplane. Instead, the Lancair pilot waited because the
Avenger was
approaching and he did not want to be in front of the Avenger while
taxiing.
After the Avenger passed, the Lancair pilot taxied onto Papa taxiway.
He
followed the Avenger at a distance so that he could remain clear of the
Avenger's propeller blast. The Lancair pilot reported that it was "stop
and
go" traffic on the taxiway because of the number of airplanes taxiing
for
takeoff. The Lancair pilot reported that the Avenger pilot did not make
any
"S-turns" while taxiing, but instead, taxied straight ahead. The
Lancair
pilot reported that "all of a sudden" he observed black smoke and
debris
"flying everywhere" as the Avenger hit the RV-6. The Lancair pilot
reported
that there were no wing-walkers or aircraft marshallers next to the
Avenger
while it was taxiing on Papa taxiway.

A witness reported that he observed the Avenger taxi from the Warbird
parking area to the P-1 taxiway and on Papa taxiway. The witness
reported
that he was walking in the same direction as the Avenger was taxiing,
so the
witness was focused on watching the Avenger. The witness reported that
the
Avenger was moving "very slowly and deliberately." He reported that the
Avenger did not make any S-turns while it taxied on Papa taxiway. He
reported that there were no wing-walkers for the Avenger while it
taxied on
Papa taxiway.

Another witness reported that she saw the Avenger do one S-turn while
it was
on Papa taxiway. She reported that she was observing airplanes taxi
toward
"Tower Road taxiway." She reported that there were about 8 - 10
airplanes,
including a blue B-25 warbird, in front of the Avenger. She reported
she
observed the Avenger angled toward the side of the taxiway when it was
"further down" the taxiway, but she did not know if the Avenger was
doing
S-turns at the time of the accident.

One of EAA's video production team was doing a video shoot of the Papa
taxiway as the dissimilar aircraft were taxing south toward Tower Road
taxiway where they turned toward the runway for a "mid-field
departure." The
video operator was located about 40 feet south of the Tower Road
taxiway.
Once the aircraft reached Tower Road taxiway, an aircraft marshaller
would
clear the aircraft to turn left to taxi toward runway 18 where the
aircraft
would wait for an ATC clearance for takeoff.

The video indicated that numerous aircraft were in line on Papa taxiway
at
the Tower Road taxiway. The video showed that the aircraft in front of
the
Avenger, before the impact occurred, included the accident RV-6, a
green and
white high wing airplane (Tundra), a gray RV-6, a red and white Cessna
150,
a Glasair, a RV-6, a L-39 jet, and a blue B-25 warbird. The video
showed the
Tundra in front of the accident RV-6 and just behind the gray RV-6. The
video showed the Tundra taxiing off the right side of Papa taxiway. The
video showed that after the Tundra taxied off the taxiway, the Avenger
was
in a slight turn to the right and then turned back to the centerline
within
about 17 seconds after the Tundra taxied off the taxiway. The Avenger
impacted the RV-6 about 1 minute 21 seconds after the Tundra taxied off
Papa
taxiway. The Avenger was the fifth airplane from Tower Road taxiway at
the
time of the accident. The video indicated that the Avenger was taxiing
straight ahead for about 9 - 10 seconds prior to the time of impact and
was
not making a S-turn. The video indicated that the Avenger pilot was
looking
forward over the nose of the Avenger as it was taxiing forward prior to
impact with the RV-6.

The length of Papa taxiway from the P-1 taxiway to the Tower Road
taxiway is
1,500 feet. The accident occurred about 320 feet north of the Tower
Road
taxiway. The width of the taxiway is 35 feet. The width of the
Avenger's
main landing gear measured from the outside of the tires is about 12
feet.

An EAA official reported that the aircraft taxiing on Papa taxiway
between
the P-1 taxiway and Tower Road taxiway are not controlled by ATC ground
control or by EAA marshallers.

I enjoyed this read...

TERRORISM? SO MANY VOLUNTEERING FOR SUICIDE, FOR WHAT?
Dorothy A. Seese
August 11, 2006
NewsWithViews.com

When someone is willing to give up his or her life to strike back at a perceived enemy for vengeance, we might write them off as just a loose nut who went over the edge. When either an organized group, or cells of radical believers in some religion or cause, begin recruiting numbers of individuals who allegedly are willing to blow themselves up the media labels them "terrorists" and that seems to explain their behavior, but in fact, it confuses the issue. We first have to define a terrorist, then we need to know what common bond these people have that enables them to willingly make the supreme sacrifice for their beliefs. For the general media, the answer is simple: label them "Islamic radicals" and that is all the explanation that is needed -- the boys are headed for a grand afterlife with Allah.

Then there is a peculiar non sequitur about these "radical Islamists" in that none of them have been identified as coming from the countries which the US and its ally, the UK, have militarily or verbally attacked to spread democracy and freedom -- e.g., Iraq, Iran or Syria. They come from Egypt, or they are British subjects, Arabians, and now presumably Pakistanis. If you think this is beginning to foul up the matrix of this "terrorism" game, you're right. Even the world's finest computers freeze at this strange code, and the human mind has to sound the TILT button.

Of further interest is that neither the US nor the UK have launched any counterstrikes against the native lands of these "terrorists" ... whether it be Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt or Morocco. Or Libya... remember Lockerbee!

Are there such radical Islamic bonds between individuals of the Arab world that folks are standing in line to become suicide bombers, willing to blow up the very airliners in which they are flying, to make a statement in behalf of their Arab or Islamic national friends, while the natives of those lands aren't involved in the plots? There is something a bit abnormal about that line of thinking. Al-Qaida? Does it have a roster of suicide-prone radical Islamists who are waiting to find a way to blow up themselves and a few hundred assorted airline passengers on behalf of Palestinians, Lebanese and Iraqis?

Is the president of Iran being encouraged to step up his nuclear program by a few handfuls of Islamic extremists who pay the supreme price to let him know they're with him, as they go on their way to join Allah?

Or does this whole outbreak of seemingly scheduled terror attacks simply point the finger, and the world's eyes, at nations who are different from us and hence, need to be liberated and reindoctrinated? Just as folks are beginning to feel safe flying in aluminum tubes with heavy engines through unpredictable weather while they breathe recycled but not disinfected air where one can exhale tuberculosis but not smoke, we get yet another bomb scare. Maximum coverage is given to the stringent prohibitions, precautions, arrests, inconveniences, and military presence by "our side" while little to nearly nothing is said about the less than illustrious "terrorists" who allegedly would have done the deed had our side not caught them.

Of course, all these terrorists are really jealous of our "freedom" in the US and UK, and the American public hands more of their former freedoms over to the government for safekeeping ... as in handing over the chickens to the fox to protect. Furthermore, they're folks who are so zealous for their enslaved condition, they're willing to die for it, while we "free" people cower at the very thought of death. (Keep the computer running, it's beginning to make strange sounds from the score of an old Hitchcock movie.)

Now airline passengers to and from Heathrow Airport (which is being avoided by the airlines with greater intensity than it would if bubonic had been discovered there) are tossing their shampoo and hair mousse into the airport trash cans under the watchful eye of the police. So what has been accomplished?

1. Americans and perhaps Brits are being acclimated to the environment of police surveillance and presence in formerly quiet public places where people once took their children for an afternoon of watching the planes take off and land. It used to be advertised on Phoenix radio that parents could spend little to nothing for an entire afternoon with their children by taking them to the airport, that is, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. That ceased on September 11, 2001.

2. The US has invoked "Code Red" for the first time, after a lot of orange alerts.

3. Our leadership, if besieged by enough code red situations, will be "justified" in invoking martial law and suspending habeas corpus and all remaining particles of the Bill of Rights, so that we Americans can feel safe.

4. We're always reminded that these foiled terrorists are Islamics while being informed that Islam is a religion of peace ... which besmacks of doublespeak at the highest levels of leadership.

5. The obvious cure for all this terrorism will eventually be unveiled and it will be to unite the planet under one world government, with one world elite leadership under one great leader, and one amalgamated race of humans who have one world religion of spirituality. Thus, all being one, we will have unity, and we will not have dissent. (Dissenters will disappear as quickly as a bullet can travel or cyanide can kill.)

It isn't amusing to me to visualize just how amused the Arab leaders must be at our panic in the streets and the failure of Americans in particular to defend their nation by throwing out the leaders under whose guidance all the events since Nine-Eleven have taken place. Oh yes, the documents were ready to be signed, the police were ready to be placed at their posts, the media were drooling for the next non-event with which to terrify the public, and otherwise normal folks are eager to surrender more freedoms for a safety no government can give. A real terrorist strikes without warning, and has a reason. Faux terrorists are caught so that what was prevented can never be proved, but is assumed as fact by government pronouncements and media coverage, particularly of events of the past.

I have observed that when all eyes are drawn to the concourses of airports, it is well to look down the halls of leadership's house and find out which are the war rooms. What is going on while we're distracted? If, IF the media would focus on some of those things about to come to pass, we might find out more about why we're having our attention riveted on a non-event.

But, even if you are drawn to suspect that all is not well, you will be very, very careful to whom you say such things, perhaps only to your spouse or your parent, because they may be listening. They may have your computer tapped, also your phones and faxes. You put on your American flag lapel pin just as some others put on their mark of allegiance in 1933 Germany. It symbolizes your patriotism, your loyalty to this country, whatever it is and is becoming.

You still need your American flag on Memorial Day, however, to remember those who died and the freedom that is also among the dead.

Those who "hate us for our freedom" should in fact love us, or at least pity us, for the brainless fools we have become under a leadership of tyrants equal to the world's worst. It isn't that the American people are evil as a whole, at least no more so than other sin-infected humans, but we're more deceived than most people about ourselves, our nation, and our leadership.

Some folks are indeed radicals, but it is doubtful that those religious fanatics make up an organized or even loosely affiliated cache of suicide bombers. Most of them are occupied fighting one another. We need to learn over again how to think, and figure out what makes sense even if we are afraid we will hate the answer.

Asiana airplane takes off minus its cabin attendants

This is funny, they must have been looking for the keys to the plane.

[this is the end of the article, it has a lot of info, incl. history]

In May, a German chemistry team outlined the difficulties authorities
faced
in developing a detection test for two common peroxide-based
explosives,
TATP and HMTD, used in the past by terrorists. The article in
Analytical and
Bioanalytical Chemistry journal suggested that authorities have tests
for
samples of these explosives, but effective air monitoring for only one,
TATP, is now possible.

HMTD, the explosive involved in the British bomb plot, gives off fewer
vapors.

Oxley, the University of Rhode Island scientist, predicts that, despite
the
difficulties, airport bomb scanners will add liquid explosive
ingredients to
their capabilities within perhaps a year.

Langerman is less sure. "I think the world we knew of easy carry-on
luggage
is gone," he says.

Captain risked aircraft to teach first officer safety lesson:
investigators

Investigators have criticised the captain of an Embraer EMB-120
Brasilia
turboprop after he deliberately allowed the aircraft to descend to just
475ft above water, during a scheduled passenger flight, to highlight a
safety point to a trainee first officer.

The French-registered aircraft (F-GFEO) was approaching the Isle of Man
off
the northwest UK mainland and, at the time of the low-level flight, was
heading for 600ft-high terrain only 1nm away.

It had been conducting a shuttle flight from Manchester, with seven
passengers and three crew, on 31 March last year. During preparations
for
approach to runway 08 at Ronaldsway Airport, the captain realised that
the
aircraft’s instruments were not tuned to the instrument landing system
(ILS) frequency but instead to the airport’s VOR frequency.

The captain was training an inexperienced first officer at the time,
and
deliberately did not point out the error, or retune the ILS instrument
to
the correct frequency, in order to use the oversight to highlight
safety
issues.

At a distance of 5.2nm from the runway the captain initiated a descent.
Visibility was around 4,000m with scattered cloud at 600ft.

The aircraft continued to descend until it was just 475ft above the
surface
of the sea. Its primary and secondary radar returns briefly vanished
and air
traffic controllers, concerned about the aircraft’s height and position
relative to high ground, contacted the crew to ask if they had the
terrain
in sight.

Once satisfied that the first officer had realised the ILS tuning
error, the
captain executed a climb to bring the turboprop back up to 1,600ft.

“Originally it was considered that the most likely reason for this
incident was that the pilots had made a genuine mistake,” says the Air
Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). “However, later in the
investigation the commander was insistent that he was fully aware of
his
actions, wishing to use the mistake as a training point for the first
officer.

“It is considered that to knowingly take such action – on a scheduled
passenger flight – was highly inappropriate and runs counter to
accepted
practices.”

The AAIB says that the deliberate deviation potentially endangered the
aircraft and “raises concerns” about the training and oversight of the
flight crew.

But investigators were unable to made a recommendation to audit the
operator, because the company – unidentified in the AAIB report – was
sold and renamed, before losing its air operator’s certificate in
December
last year over “unsafe operations”. The company subsequently ceased
trading.

Investigators have studied a number of events during which aircraft
have
been at risk of colliding with terrain while attempting an approach to
the
Isle of Man. Previous inquiries highlighted the fact that the island’s
main navigation beacon, used during landings, was sited several miles
away
from the airport.

Although the airport has since installed ILS on runway 08, the
glideslope
was out of service at the time of this latest incident.

Venezuela troops fire on ColombiaFrom correspondents in Bogota
August 12, 2006 04:38am
Article from: Agence France-PresseFont size: + -
Send this article: Print Email
ABOUT 70 Venezuelan soldiers and a helicopter entered neighbouring Colombia firing weapons near a settlement there, local officials said overnight.

The troops crossed the border near Cucuta, Colombia, in the settlement of Guaramito, some 640 km north east of Bogota, according to Gladys Fuentes, a local authority at the settlement.

Police commander Humberto Henao said local residents heard gunshots fired by soldiers and from the helicopter in the direction of Colombians.

He said that group of police and prosecutors went to the area to determine exactly where the incident happened and then report to the Foreign Ministry in Bogota.

"With that data, they will evaluate where the helicopters were spotted and then make a final decision," he said.

Colombia and Venezuela share a 2219-km border, which is often crossed by troops of both countries, often in hot pursuit of drug traffickers, leftist rebels and rightist paramilitary armies, often flouting the law or by accident, creating a perpetual headache for the foreign ministries of the Caribbean neighbours.

On July 30, Colombia returned to Venezuela 10 solders who, Colombians said, had gotten lost.

Late last year, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe admitted that former Venezuelan soldiers plotted against President Hugo Chavez at a Colombian military facility.

McAllen flight makes emergency landing

MCALLEN - An Allegiant Airlines flight headed for Las Vegas made an
emergency landing.

There were some tense moments for passengers onboard the flight, which
left
McAllen-Miller International Airport Thursday night.

The plane had already taken off when several people reported seeing
smoke.
One hundred fifty passengers had to be evacuated.

Officials determined one of the plane's engines had blown out.

No injuries were reported, but passengers were left stranded at the
airport
for several hours.

[Peter, this is the type of report that I was thinking of]

3 airport workers sickened by odor

HOUSTON - Three airport workers were sickened Friday by the odor of a
liquid
that spilled in the cargo hold of a Continental Airlines plane,
officials
said.

A hazardous materials unit from the Houston Fire Department found a
drop of
liquid on a U.S. postal service box on the plane at Bush
Intercontinental
Airport. The liquid, which was slightly acidic, was run through a
database
but no match was found, District Chief Tommy Dowdy said.

Preliminary tests showed the liquid was not radioactive or flammable,
officials said.

Firefighters were called to the airport at 8:45 a.m. after three
baggage
workers unloading the cargo hold became sick from the odor. The plane
had
arrived about 8 a.m. from Fort Myers, Fla.

The workers were given an eye wash at a Continental clinic at the
airport
and then released, airline spokesman David Messing said. Two of the
employees went back to work.

No passengers were affected by the odor, officials said.

Dowdy thinks the workers may have overreacted considering the
heightened
security at the nation's airports after authorities discovered a plot
Thursday to blow up airliners headed to the United States.

"We wrote it off as maybe hypersensitivity to what was going on," Dowdy
said. "We're glad to have them overreact," he said.

Authorities cleared the plane, allowing it to be put back into service,
Messing said.
