UN Secretary General Kofi Annan today said he was "shocked" at Israel's "apparently deliberate targeting" of a UN post in Lebanon, in which up to four UN observers were killed.
Mr Annan described the strike as a "co-ordinated artillery and aerial attack on a long established and clearly marked UN post."
He said it took place "despite personal assurances given to me by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that UN positions would be spared Israeli fire."
"Furthermore, General Alain Pelligrini, the UN Force Commander in south Lebanon, had been in repeated contact with Israeli officers throughout the day on Tuesday, stressing the need to protect that particular UN position from attack.
"I call on the Government of Israel to conduct a full investigation into this very disturbing incident and demand that any further attack on UN positions and personnel must stop.
"The names and nationalities of those killed are being withheld pending notification of their families. I extend sincere condolences to the families of our fallen peacekeepers."
I'm sure Hezbollah fellows were hiding in there with the help of the UN blue helmets.

That term is almost as meaningless as what the term "Border Guard" in Texas.

Well, on another thread, we have had some discussion of this. My feeling is that the UN is basically making a PC offering to whatever terrorist is in charge in a particular place. Remember the Belgian "peacekeepers" in Africa who weren't allowed to fire and were overrun and hacked or burned to death (with the Africans for some reason cutting off their noses first)?
No country, including 3rd world holes, should permit the UN to have control of their forces. The UN has absolutely no program and no system for permitting their "forces" to defend themselves, let alone have any effect on the area in which they are stationed.
Apparently the media, the Democrats, the academics and all the other leftist lunatic don't want to recognize that Hezbollah, Hamas and al Qaeda are all the same thing: terrorists who would love to repeat 9/11/01 all over again. Israel is doing the right thing by killing Hezbollahs/terrorists, and we should be helping them.""
I love the fact that Israel is targeting the banks and financial institutions for moving Hezzie money and accomodating them in lots of other ways. TV producer worked thru the many phone calls needed to send money to an address in an Arab TV appeal for funds for Hezzies and it traced to Wachovia bank here in USA. People need to be paying attention to this kind of activity.
Lebanon and Syria and others have harbored the Hezzies for years. Bush made it clear after 9-11 that any person or country that harbors terrorists is a part of the problem, not part of the solution. Now seems some of the chickens are coming home to roost.
I wish I had more funds in my retirement that I could send money to Israel.

Hezbollah guerrillas were setting up rocket launchers near U.N. positions, spokesman Milos Strugar said.
Three of the U.N. stations along the border had been hit by Israeli artillery, and the organization was unable to move desperately needed aid convoys onto roads that were coming under heavy bombardment, he said.

For a UN Sec Gen to claim, within hours of the incident, that this disaster is "apparently deliberate" --- is beyond irresponsible; it's demented.
It's not like they are umpires or referees enforcing the rules of a sporting match.
They aren't the Red Cross or Red Cresent.
Unfortunate but avoidable. Avoidable by staying out of the area all together.
Probably killed loading the launchers!
