The Syrian embassy said it was offering "safe haven" to Americans and other citizens wishing to flee Lebanon, where nearly 200 civilians have been killed during a massive Israeli military bombardment.
"Now, while thousands of United States citizens are stranded in Lebanon attempting to flee the ongoing massacre there, Syria has opened its borders to US citizens as well as citizens of other nationalities," the embassy said in a statement.
"In Syria, US and citizens of other nations find a safe haven from the barbaric and atrocious acts of the Israeli army in Lebanon," it said, adding that already a "huge influx of US and foreign nationals" have entered Syria.
Syria was waiving visa requirements for entry and offering "all sorts of humane assistance to the thousands of refugees coming from Lebanon including medical attention," it said.
"From Syria, US citizens can return safely home."
US military helicopters flew 43 people out of Lebanon Monday and preparations were underway to evacuate potentially thousands of US nationals by air and by sea, officials said.
Other foreign capitals also rushed to evacuate frightened nationals from the escalating conflict, as Israel indicated it may provide windows in its six-day-old aerial bombardment to facilitate safe passage.
LOL! (but true)
Fox generously offers to guard chicken coop.
LOL!!!! What a great line!
Well you can look at it two ways:
1. They're looking for hostages on the cheap.
2. They are looking for any possible way to tell the US that they are nice guys and don't want to fight.
I guess the downside risk that 1 is the answer would be enough to discourage most flys and certainly any American with half a brain. So the comment that Dems should take them up on the offer does make a lot of sense.
Gee, entusting my safety, if I were in Lebanon, to Assad....or sticking it out in Lebanon and taking my chances I can either a) wait it out b) have my Government provide assitance or c) find an Israeli soldier that might be able to provide assistence out. I'd take the latter option.
They publish The Onion in Syria? This has gotta be from there or scrappleface.
The muslims can't resist a chance to get some good PR, can they? I would think they perhaps see this as a chance to try and turn these Americans' sentiments against Israel and pro-Muslim??? I don't know if I as an American would trust the Syrians at all, personally. Perhaps if I was a "liberal" American, or like most of our modern journalist I might! After all, they seem to be on the same side already. JMHO...
I have been reading your posts the past few days.
I know you are suffering, but you still have a sense of humor and you are making me laugh.
I keep checking to see if you have been evacuated.
Good luck and I hope you make it home quickly and safely!
Pinging all CIA operatives
How could you possibly have a government like Syria or Iran to hold hostages in the modern world and get away with it?
Yeah. Like that stunning job the Carter admin did when we had hostages in Iran the last time. I bet they are still shaking in their boots - with laughter.
At least they had the good sense to let the hostages go the day Reagan was sworn in. Hopefully they see Bush in the same light.
Unless they were truly suicidal. We have grown-ups in the White House now.
Big ditto on that! Prayers are with you, Rebel!
Ha ha ha... Yeah! "Save haven" until they need a few hostages and then... well... All bets are off.
The phrase "between a rock and a hard place" comes to mind.
THANKS, BUT NO THANKS.
Your turnip truck is looking for you.
Sounds like Syria is worried about being attacked and is looking for insurance. Any American who hides there deserves what they get.
Damascus ain't going to be around to much longer.
What a nightmare! Being offered safe haven in Syria! Now that is scary.
I can only presume from your insult that you haven't read my comment properly.
If not I am puzzled as to why I believe that America would destroy Syria if they took American hostages would merit an insult, even if you do disagree?
