Syria offers safe haven to US nationals fleeing Lebanon

Some Americans were yesterday evacuated without any problems through Syria together with Poles and some Czechs.

I'd go to Syria in a heartbeat, though I've been afraid to do so. As a semi-official guest of the government, however, I wouldn't hesitate a minute. Assad really is not stupid.

This largesse on the part of Syria comes on the heels of G8 together with Assad's little chat with the Turkish president who dialed him up about calling for a cease fire.

Assad clearly has new incentives to move toward the center, away from the overwhelming shadow of Iran. Financial, no doubt. Given the choice of shiny new international currency invested in infrastructure in Syria or the possibility of all-out war and/or a dearth of big "borrowed" bucks, Assad has made the correct choice. Actually, for the foreseeable future, Damascus might be one of the safest vacation spots on earth.
