From Tourists Streaming into Syria from Lebanon, post 47:

To: cinives

You all might find this damn funny, but my sorry ass is marooned in Beirut, where I have been working for the IMF. If anybody has any helpful suggestions on how I can get out of this war zone, I would be most grateful. Right now, the road to Syria is the only way out of Lebanon for anyone, including U.S. citizens, and the Israelis are bombing that road. I am NOT happy with the Israelis right now. I understand their concerns about their kidnapped soldiers but bombing the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way.

Stay safe, and G-d bless. Can you get out through Turkey?

Lebanon doesn't border Turkey. It is practically surrounded by Syria and the Mediterranean Sea, with a relatively short southern border with Israel.

As you can see, any trip to Turkey would require passage through Syria.

Israel controls all exits.
I hope that their generals can come to some way to accommodate the 2,500 U.S. citizens that are stranded here in Lebanon. This was not a war zone when we arrived, nor was there any reason for a reasonable person to expect that it would become one. I feel like Tom Hanks in that horrible movie "The Terminal." I'm trapped and cannot get out.

You have GOT to be joking! Syria use the Beirut airport? Now THAT would be justification for bombing, and it's only about ten minutes for the IAF to get here. There was no rush.

The time to destroy the runway there, IMFer, is before Syria uses it. If it takes the IAF 10 minutes to get there, it also takes Syria 10 minutes to get to the IAF bases.

You apparently made a poor career choice to be a money changer in Lebanon. Don't worry, my prediction is we will eventually send someone to pick you and the others foolish enough to trade with the Towelhead.

Have a great day. Keep your head down. In the meantime try to look like your name is al-Hariri.

They are at a dormitory in Haifa, but Haifa is also being hit with rocket fire.'

Heavenly Father, we ask protection for your children, who are fearful and in harm's way. Please give them safe passage out of danger. Amen.

Someone should let him know at some point that taking out the airport was a strategic necessity. Not really. The Lebanese army doesn't operate any fixed wing aircraft. They don't need runways for helicopters.

----------------------- Per FNC or CNN - have been switching - earlier this afternoon there was a report, complete with video--Iran sends in a 747(very few markings) to Beirut, on an as needed basis, with assorted supplies/people for Hezbollah.

Here's an excellent analysis on what's going on: STRATFOR: Middle East Crisis: Backgrounder

The article supposes that Israeli forces will drive deeper into Lebanon than before because of the longer range missles Hezbollah now has.

I'd be concerned that this might mean that Hezbollah may retreat to the north and into Beirut.

What kind of mess that would make I wouldn't know. But I'd get my butt out.

Certainly do NOT find your predicament funny at all and wish you the best.

Make sure you have bottled water for one thing, the basic survival stuff. Worry about what you can control and how best to situate yourself. Also I would try to stay away from the Hezbollah factions and areas the Israelis might deem strategic targets in any way. Realize you probably know all this and sorry for just stating the obvious. It is the obvious basics that you can control and hopefully other freepers will have better ideas and be of more help to you here. Good idea posting here as you did and seeking advice.
