UPDATE:
Mobile Theater High Energy Laser
Actually, in a nation this bleeping small, mobility is not essential. Fixed defenses work just fine. Not just rockets, but artillery shells, too:
(Source : TRW Inc.; issued Nov. 5, 2002) TRW-Built Laser Weapon Shoots Down Artillery Projectile In FlightREDONDO BEACH, Calif. and WHITE SANDS, N.M. --- Until today, nothing could stop an artillery projectile once it was fired. Now, in a world's first, a high-energy laser, developed by TRW for the U.S. Army and the Israel Ministry of Defense, has intercepted an artillery projectile and caused it to explode harmlessly in the air.
The shootdown took place during a live-fire test of the TRW-built Mobile Tactical High-Energy Laser (MTHEL) testbed, conducted by the U.S. Army, at its White Sands Missile Range.
"This shootdown shifts the paradigm for defensive capabilities. We've shown that even an artillery projectile hurtling through the air at supersonic speed is no match for a laser," said Lt. Gen. Joseph M. Cosumano, Jr., Commanding General, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command and Army Space Command. "Tactical high-energy lasers have the capacity to change the face of the battlefield."
The shootdown occurred as part of a new series of tests to determine MTHEL requirements and demonstrate the system's capabilities against a wide range of airborne targets. In earlier tests during 2000 and 2001, the testbed -- then called the THEL/Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator -- focused on the threat of artillery rockets and succeeded in shooting down 25 Katyusha rockets, fired singly and in salvos.
"TRW's THEL technology is now proven against both short-range rockets and artillery projectiles. With this test, MTHEL further substantiates its potential to protect soldiers and key assets against attack by a variety of air threats," said Tim Hannemann, president and CEO of TRW Space & Electronics.
TRW developed the MTHEL testbed under contract to the U.S. Army, for the joint US Army and Israel Ministry of Defense THEL ACTD program. "We look forward to producing a prototype of a truly mobile version and operational tactical laser weapon as the MTHEL program gets underway."
The EU has to avoid offending its "houseguests".
Two things must be considered with thinking of the Lebanese government 'allowing' the terrorists to move freely.
Remember that it doesn't have significant enough forces to stop it. And also remember what happened the last time it tried. Beirut was severely damaged during the strife that lasted years. Syria basicly occpied the nation.
I think Lebanon can be forgiven much of the blame on this. At least that's my thoughts on it.

Hizbullah terrorists fired a long-range missile at the major Israeli port city of Haifa Thursday evening. Tzfat and Nahariya were struck again as well, causing scores of injuries.
A simultaneous wave of missiles struck Tzfat and Nahariya at around 7:30. Twenty people were injured in Tzfat - one seriously and three moderately. As the 8 PM news programs began and Israelis prepared to break the Fast of the 17th of Tamuz, two long-range missiles struck Haifa - though no injuries resulted.
Throughout Thursday, nearly 100 Katyusha missiles were fired at various towns and cities in northern Israel, injuring 90 people and killing two.
Eleven people were wounded lightly by shrapnel in the latest attack on Nahariya. One rocket hit a multi-level apartment house and a second destroyed a house. Residents have been ordered to remain in shelters and a small fire is raging in one of the town's parks.
In the eastern Galilee, rockets hit Rosh Pina and Hatzor, as well as Tzfat which was struck earlier in the day as well.
In Judea and Samaria, Arabs threw rocks and firebombs at Israeli targets Thursday afternoon and also fired at Israeli soldiers. No one was injured.
Rocks were thrown at Israeli vehicles in Samaria, and a firebomb was thrown at a bus near Bethlehem.
IDF soldiers found ammunition and weapons in an Arab car at a checkpoint west of Hevron. The driver was arrested and is being interrogated.

yep, the preverbial %$^# is about to hit the fan
So, Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh are the same person?!
Hey Dr... any rumblings inside on an attempted revolution if Iran decides to go after Israel?DoctorZIn is the expert on Iran.
I expect to see known Hizballa and Hamas camps hit severely. I'm not convinced Beirut will be. Perhaps only known portions containing those groups will be. I could be wrong. Perhaps we're only a few hours from finding out.
Now, THAT I believe.
Sure, although they're not talking about what's happening on the ground - they seem to be reporting live from an airplane full of people making aliyah. Strangely appropriate, actually, in a way. :)
There are other links probably but A7 radio is my favorite because they're very conservative/pro-settler.
"So, Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh are the same person?!"
Well, duh.
:O)
Oh crap....
Does this mean that Israel is at war with Syria on Lebanese soil?
.....Beirut may not become glass, but it probably will become flatter than Keira Knightly's chest....
Beruit and Lebanon are not and will not be targets except as specifically targeted as Hezbollah ground. The areas and buildings of Hezbollah will likely be obliterated.
Lebanon per se is in the middle and defenseless against Hezbollah and Syria and Israel.
A healthy Lebanon is necessary to the long term health of Israel.
Today is the one year anniversary of my Dad's passing. I hope I don't have more reasons to hate this date......
Oh, I was being sarcastic! I'm cheering for them 100%
Israel does seem to be very selective about targets (which is a good and humane thing), so you're probably right that it won't just bomb the heck out of all of Beirut, but I certainly can see them totally destroying selected targets and if there is a ground invasion, as seems more and more likely, I CAN see them going door to door through all of the major cities and areas looking for terrorists.
