Whenever I hear them say that (and I would have to guess that is factually true), I always wonder what exactly would BE evidence, immediately after the fact, of terrorism? I would think you would have to get the scene under control and actually look around before you could acertain the cause. Then again, I'm not psychic! ;)

>>>>Explosion In Door Co. Causes Injuries, Damage

Looks like this one was gas too. Saying 'propane tank exploded'.

Could well be.

Out here in the sticks, the usual suspect in construction is the backhoe on buried lines. "Call before you dig."

I could see how in an urban environment it would be more likely for somebody to knock loose or crack a gas line up in a building.

With the ConEd report of a strong smell of gas, seems likely that somebody knocked a cap off or crimped a pipe.

It gets exciting, believe me.

I used to represent a construction company . . . big lawsuit is inevitable after something like this!

I am extremely sensitive to the mercaptans that they put in the gas to make it smell (natural gas has no odor of its own.)

I kept bothering Atlanta Gas Light because I smelled gas around my meter. They came out with the soap solution and couldn't find a leak . . . I kept bothering them . . . they came out with a sophisticated "sniffer" and lo and behold there was a microscopic crack in the meter itself. Replaced it and no more smell.

AGL man said they might be hiring . . . < g >

Google the address and you get a James R Maher, a holder of Unilab Corp/DE, whatever that is.

Now I know why Home Depot has a cow if you accidently walk into the store with a propane tank!

LOL! I'm very paranoid about gas leaks, mostly because of having lived in New York for many years, where gas leaks abound. With faulty gas plumbing done by fly-by-night unlicensed handymen or supers, careless construction or demolition and old pipes (not to mention poorly capped gas lighting fixtures left in old apartments), it's a wonder there aren't more explosions.

"But it always seems to me that terrorists are looking for high profile targets, and this building doesn't seem to be one."

That's true. One announcement on Fox was laughable though.....they said DHS does not know the cause of the explosion but says it's not terrorist related. I only wish they would hold their comments until they have something positive to report about the cause because those kind of comments make them look dumb.

I'm off to work....BBL.

CNN is now reporting that there was a smell of gas prior to the explosion.

I passed by it around 9:15 on my way to work on Park Ave. So many fire engines, police, EMS -- there and en route. Incredibly, emergency vehicles all getting through the rush hour traffic with amazing speed. Several-block perimeter set up with cops diverting traffic. Lots of people on the street trying to get a glimpse. Lots of sirens -- in fact, I can still hear them going to the scene from my office on the 28th floor. It's a bad one.
