On July 17, 1996 – Liberation Day in Saddam's Iraq and two days before the Atlanta Olympics – at least 270 people see streaking objects zigzagging off the horizon and culminating in the destruction of TWA Flight 800 off the south coast of Long Island.
At the time of the crash, Richard Clarke is serving as chairman of the Coordinating Security Group on terrorism. Within 30 minutes of the plane's crash, Clarke tells us, he convenes a meeting of the CSG in the White House situation room.
"The FAA," Clarke reports, is "at a total loss for an explanation. The flight path and the cockpit communications were normal. The aircraft climbed to 17,000 feet, then there was no aircraft."
In fact, the Federal Aviation Administration does have an explanation. Its radar operators in New York saw on their screens an unknown object "merging" with TWA 800 in the seconds before the crash and rushed the radar data to Washington. For reasons that will become clear later, Clarke also deceives the reader about the altitude of TWA 800. The last altitude the FAA actually recorded was about 13,700 feet. This is easily verified and beyond debate...

The summer of 1996 was a time fraught with fraught for the American counter-terrorist community. The Summer Olympics was to open in Atlanta on July 19. The presidential conventions for both the national parties would take place in August. Late June had seen the attack at where Mughniyah added almost a score of new victims, this time members of the US Air Force.
Things really got tense when, on July 17, TWA Flight 800 fell from the sky in the waters south of Long Island, minutes after taking off from John F. Kennedy International Airport. For days there was little doubt that terrorists had killed the 230 ill-fated victims on the Boeing 747. (A year later, in a July 10, 1997, hearing, the Subcommittee on Aviation of the Transportation Committee of the House of Representatives, stated, "A missile, a bomb and a mechanical failure have emerged as possible causes.")...
I heard the other night that the Clinton administration almost immediately drew up plans to retaliate against Iran, because they were convinced it was an attack by them. I think it might have been a preview of the CNN Presents show on the explosion this weekend. I recorded it, will have to watch.

The Washington Times reported last week that anti-terror agencies are concerned about the presence of Hezbollah in Canada. America's northern neighbor, they believe, is a "stronghold" for the Islamic terrorist group that is responsible for more than 300 American deaths, including the 1983 attack on the Marine barracks in Beirut.
Unbelievably, Hezbollah is not banned in Canada. The Liberal government of Prime Minister Jean Chretien refuses to proscribe this murderous organization because it does social work among Lebanon's poor and has representatives in that country's legislative assembly.
As a result of this disgraceful piece of Liberal generosity, Hezbollah has been able to use Canadian territory for ten years to recruit, launder money, raise funds, forge documents and purchase military-related equipment for use in attacks on Israel. It has also built up a network of agents across the country. Mohammed Hussein Al-Husseini, a Hezbollah member, told Canadian security officials: "Hezbollah has members in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto - all of Canada." Altogether, Hezbollah has worked hard turning Canada into a Lebanon North.
Moreover, one of these Canada-based agents, Fauzi Ayub, was arrested by Israeli authorities after being sent to the West Bank to engineer attacks against their country. Two others, wanted for terrorist acts committed elsewhere, were hiding out in Canada. One has since been charged in connection with the 1993 Saudi Arabia bombing that killed 19 Americans.
But it gets worse - if that is possible.
A US Senate committee hearing recently revealed that one of the world's most wanted terrorists, Imad Mugniyah, is in charge of Hezbollah's Vancouver cell. Mugniyah has planned terrorist attacks worldwide the past two decades and currently has a $25 million dollar reward on his head for the 1985 hijacking of an airliner that left one American dead. He is also suspected of having a hand in the Marine barracks attack as well as in the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Argentina.
Another indication of how highly Hezbollah's leaders value their Canadian operation is that money raised from a Hezbollah cigarette-smuggling ring in North Carolina was sent to Canada. Moreover, an important Hezbollah agent, Mohammad Dbouk, was sent from Lebanon to run the Vancouver cell. According to the Senate committee, Dbouk was so highly regarded by Hezbollah that his
application to become a "martyr" was rejected five times.

UN calls for Lebanon peace force (breaking news)

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair have called for an international force to be sent to Lebanon to stop attacks on Israel.
Mr Blair said the force could "stop the bombardment coming over into Israel and therefore gives Israel a reason to stop its attacks on Hezbollah".
Israel launched its offensive last week following the capture of two of its soldiers by Lebanese guerrillas.
Hezbollah has been firing hundreds of missiles into northern Israel.

Two Montegnard Degar Christians Killed in Prison: Wife Denied Body of Her Dead Husband by Vietnamese Authorities
A Christian man was denied food and water by Vietnamese authorities in Ha Nam prison and tortured to death.
According to a news release from the Montagnard Foundation, Siu Lul, 62, was denied food and water by Vietnamese authorities in Ha Nam prison and tortured to death. He was from the village of Ploi Kueng, Habong commune, Cu Se District, Gia Lai Province and had been incarcerated at the prison in Ha Nam since 2004. On April 24 2006 he died from the effects of torture and lack of water and food.
On the day that Siu Lul died, the Montagnard Foundation stated, his wife did not have money to transport her husband’s body back to her village, so she agreed that he could be buried in Ha Nam. But in May 2006, Siu Lul’s widow asked the Vietnamese authorities how she could retrieve her late husband’s body and return it to her village for a Christian funeral.
But, the authorities told her that she could not bring her husband’s body back to her village until the time for his prison sentence had passed. In this kind of attitude, the Vietnamese authorities really show their hatred toward Degar people.
Another Degar Prisoner Dies from Torture
In another case, a Christian man called Siu Dolel, from Ploi Oi village, Ia Ke commune, Ayun Pa district, Gialai province, was arrested, tortured and imprisoned in Ha Nam on Dec. 22, 2004.
According to our contacts, in May 2006, the prison authorities tortured him again by kicking, boxing and beating him with electric batons until his right and left rib cages were broken. On June 25 June 2006, Vietnamese officials came to his wife’s house and told her that her husband had died in prison and asked her if she wanted to see his body before burial. Unfortunately, his wife did not have money to go see him, and officials then confiscated his identification card from her and left.
Who are the Montagnard Degar People?
The indigenous Montagnard Degar People have suffered decades of persecution by the government of Vietnam. According to the Montagnard Foundation they have experienced confiscation of their ancestral lands, Christian religious repression, torture, killings and imprisonment. In July 2006 the U.S. State Department continued to keep Vietnam on the “watch list” of countries that are the worst violators of religious freedom.
According to the Montagnard Foundation, currently more than 350 Degar prisoners remain in Vietnamese prisons for charges that include standing up for human rights, spreading Christianity or for fleeing to Cambodia.
Montagnard Foundation Asks for Help from International Community
The Montagnard Foundation is asking the international community to immediately demand that Vietnam release all of the estimated 350 Degar prisoners of conscience from Vietnamese prisons before more of them die. Kok Ksor, President of the Montagnard Foundation, speaking in a news release said, “Unless urgent action is taken it is feared only more and more corpses of our people will be released back to their families.”

"Palestinian caught with bomb in J'lem"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A terror attack in downtown Jerusalem was thwarted Monday, after a 25-year-old Palestinian was caught carrying a bomb in a bag on a main city thoroughfare, police said.
The male suspect, a West Bank resident, was stopped by police on the city's Jaffa Road near the Jaffa Gate for a routine security check during the late-morning incident.
The man was arrested on the scene, after the explosives were found in his bag.
During his initial police interrogation, the suspect confessed that he was carrying a bomb and said that he came to the area to carry out a terror attack, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said.
The motive for the planned attack was under investigation."
