Jul 6th - 9:46pm
By JEFF BARNARD Associated Press Writer
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MEDFORD, Ore. "Blogs study may net credible information"
by William J. Sharp
Air Force Office of Scientific Research Public Affairs
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "6/29/2006 - ARLINGTON, Va. (AFPN) -- The Air Force Office of Scientific Research has begun funding a new research area that includes a study of blogs.
Blog research may provide information analysts and warfighters with invaluable help in fighting the war on terrorism.
Drs. Brian Ulicny, senior scientist, and Mieczyslaw Kokar, president, Versatile Information Systems Inc., Framingham, Mass., will receive approximately $450,000 in funding for the three-year project titled, "Automated Ontologically-Based Link Analysis of International Web Logs for the Timely Discovery of Relevant and Credible Information."
"It can be challenging (for information analysts) to tell what's important in blogs unless you analyze patterns," Dr. Ulicny said.
Patterns include the content of the blogs as well as what hyperlinks are contained within the blog. Within blogs, hyperlinks act like reference citations in research papers, allowing someone to discover the most important events bloggers are writing about. This is the same way a person can find the most important papers in a field by finding which ones are cited most often in research papers. This type of analysis can help information analysts' searches be as productive as possible.
The blog study is part of AFOSR's new Information Forensics and Process Integration research program at Syracuse University in New York. The new portfolio of projects consists of three areas of research emphasis: incomplete information and metrics; search, interactive design and active querying; and cognitive processing.
One of the problems analysts may have with blog monitoring, Dr. Ulicny said, is there is too much actionable information for the analyst to properly analyze.
"We are developing an automated tool to tell analysts what bloggers are most interested in at a point in time," Dr. Ulicny said."
Never again will passengers sit idle.
Hey Pete, thanks for the ping.
I would have missed that.
Holland Tunnel - interesting.
Was part of the plan in 1993 along with the first WTC attack.
Exactly. They always come back. What I found most interesting about this report is that Zarqawi was involved.
Thankfully, Zarqawi's involvement was cut short. :-)
They missed one simple point - the financial district is above sea level.
The scope of plot expands:
U.S. reports plot to bomb NYC metro tunnels
FBI: Investigation of 8 al-Qaida operatives, 3 in custody, spans 6 countries
NEW YORK - Authorities have disrupted al-Qaida terrorists abroad who were plotting to attack the transportation tunnels running under the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey, the FBI announced Friday.
For most of the year, we have been focusing on a group of al-Qaida followers who have targeted the Hudson River tubes, FBI Assistant Director Mark Mershon said at a news conference. We believe we intercepted this group early in their plotting and, in fact, the plan has largely been disrupted.
Mershon said the plot would have involved martyrdom, explosives and certain of the tubes that connect New Jersey with Lower Manhattan. .....

Good, nothing like arrests -- better than coffee.
I agree.

Keep that good news coming.
I can't wait to hear the rest of the story.

PROTECTING AMERICA FROM TERRORIST ATTACK
In D.C., Squad Always on Terror Alert
07/07/06
Its 8:50 a.m. on a Monday in Washington, D.C., the kind of promising spring morning where tourists plot their days under the National Malls majestic elms and professionals splurge on espresso to fuel up for the dawning workaday week. A few blocks from the Mall, an FBI agent in charge of responding to terror threats in the nations capital is somewhat less breezy in his assessment of the coming day. Hes thumbing through an urgent message vibrating on his wireless handheld.
Weve got a threat thats causing some concern, supervisory special agent Christopher Combs murmurs as he toggles the electronic device that keeps him and every member of his National Capital Response Squad in the loop.
There are no lazy morningsor days for that matterfor Combs and his squad of 13 agents trained in SWAT, hazardous materials, crisis management, evidence collection and how to neutralize bombs and suspicious packages. The agents are part of the Washington Field Offices Joint Terrorism Task Force, a highly trained contingent of agents and veteran law enforcement officials from 28 federal and local police agencies who work traditional terrorism investigations in addition to answering the call when things heat up.
Were responding multiple times a day, says Combs, who has run the squad since February. When someone thought they heard gunshots in the U.S. Capitol garage in May, the team mobilized. A month earlier, a suspicious package at the citys crowded train station during a Friday rush hour sent squad members to the scene. In most cases we play a supporting role to local authorities who have jurisdiction. But if they determine its related to terrorism they call our guys right away, Combs says.
The National Capital Response Squad was created in 1999 to respond to any terrorist eventreal or perceivedin D.C. or Northern Virginia and to manage the scene. That there hasnt been another attack on the nations capital since 2001 is little comfort to agents who respond to possible threats every day, assuming the worst and hoping for the best. The squad averages two or three suspicious package calls each week (sometimes in a day) and another five call-outs a week for suspicious white powder reports.
Any anthrax or suspected WMD (weapon of mass destruction) we respond to, Combs says, adding, in case theres any doubt, that mailing phony anthrax and white powder is a severe offense. If you put powder in a letter and mail it were going to come get you. Its very time-intensive to investigate. The manpower you burn up on that is immense.
When the squads not responding to calls members are working investigations or training other law enforcement agencies on SWAT, crime scene management, explosives and post-bomb blast investigations, evidence collection, and terrorist response.
For Agent Combs, the morning alert that scrawled across his handheld turned out to be nothing. But, as always, it was treated as legitimate until proven otherwise. Its one of many that he and his team will have to assess and investigateall in a days work in the nations capital.
In the coming weeks well spotlight some of the other facets of the Joint Terrorism Task Force in Washington, the FBIs second largest field office. Well talk to bomb technicians, SWAT members, and learn about the role of the Rapid Deployment Team, which responds to calls for FBI assistance in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Stay tuned!

Apocalyptic signals from Iran worry U.S. intelligence
Geostrategy-Direct ^ | 7-7-2006 | Geostrategy-Direct
Posted on 07/07/2006 7:20:30 AM PDT by FreedomNeocon
The U.S. intelligence community has not been surprised by Iran's refusal to respond to a Western incentive package to suspend its uranium enrichment. Intelligence sources said Iran, following North Korea's model, intends to delay any response or negotiations for as long as possible.
The European Union and the United States demanded that Iran reply to the Western incentive package of nuclear technology, fuel and aircraft by June 29. But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said Teheran would submit an answer by Aug. 22.
The U.S. intelligence community has been trying to figure out why Ahmadinejad chose that date. Sources said the community was stumped until some Islam experts translated the Gregorian date to that of the Muslim calendar.
Then came the surprise that has the intelligence community worried.
Aug. 22 corresponds to Rajab 27 on the Muslim calendar. The date is called Lailat Al Israa, when Mohammed ascended to heaven from the Al Aqsa mosque to receive the five daily prayers. Later, Al Aqsa came to represent Jerusalem.
The Muslim commemoration is meant to be a night of struggle, accompanied by thunder and lightening, resembling the story of Moses ascending Mount Sinai to receive the Old Testament.
Ahmadinejad could be hinting to the West that he is preparing a major attack on Israel. Or, the Iranian president could be warning that unless the West caves in, he would escalate tension in the region. The lightening in Mohammed's story could represent Iranian missiles.
What is clear is that Ahmadinejad does not see himself as an Iranian leader, but a Muslim prophet, using imagery to portray himself as a messiah for both Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims.

Quoting law-enforcement and intelligence officials, the newspaper said about a dozen hard-core supporters of Hezbollah have been identified in recent weeks as operating in the New York area.
