TERRORISM: GRAPHIC CHANGE TO AL-QAEDA VIDEO
Dubai, 27 July (AKI) - The latest video of Ayman al-Zawahiri, broadcast on Thursday by the al-Jazeera network, was put together by the al-Sahab production house which has produced all the propaganda videos by the al-Qaeda leadership, but there has been a dramatic change of graphics. Cybernauts who are frequent visitors to radical Islamist forums are asking what hidden message lies in the details of this latest film. For the first time al-Zawahiri appears against a backdrop of four photos, of which only three are visible, with studio lighting. In the past he has usually been seen against a plain dark background.
The first photo, on the left of the al-Qaeda number two, shows Sheikh Abu Hafs al-Masri, who was killed in the US bombing campaign on Afghanistan in late 2001. The second, in a central position, shows the World Trade Centre twin towers in flames, while the third, on al-Zawahiri's right, shows a young Mohammad Atta, head of the 19 suicide bombers who carried out the 11 September, 2001 attacks.
One internet forum member asked why they had chosen those three photos, but no one has provided a coherent answer.
Abu Hads al-Masri is also the name of a European cell of al-Qaeda, while the other two photos are a clear visual reference to the activities of the terror network in the United States.

TERRORISM: ZAWAHIRI CITES KHOMEINI IN APPARENT OVERTURE TO SHIITES
Doha, 27 July (AKI) - The latest statement by Ayman al-Zawahiri aired on Thursday by al-Jazeera is an unprecedented step by the number two leader of a Sunni militant group towards Shiite movements and perhaps even the Hezbollah militias. At the end of the statement announcing that al-Qaeda will avenge Israel's offensive on Lebanon and the Palestinians, Al-Zawahiri launches an appeal to the 'disposessed of the world' (in Arabic 'Mustadifin fil ard'), a Koranic term often used by the founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in his speeches following the 1979 revolution.
Such a quote by the man who is widely considered al-Qaeda's strategist is unlikely to be a coincidence. An overture to a potential alliance with the Shiites must be viewed as part of a new Middle Eastern context within which the leader of the Shiite militia Hezbollah, Hassan Nasralla, is consider the new leader in the war on Israel.
Indeed al-Zawahiri says in his statement that al-Qaeda will not stand idle as Israel continues its offensive on Lebanon and the Palestinians, possibly hinting that his organization could help the Lebanon-based militants or carry out attacks on Israeli targets.
Al-Zawahiri's overture to the Shiites is however not totally unexpected. In a message a few months ago, the number two of al-Qaeda warned the late leader of the organization in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who died on 8 June in a US air raid, against mass murders of Shiite civilians in Iraq. The issue was allegedly a main point of divergence between the two top al-Qaeda officials.

MIDDLE EAST: NEW HEZBOLLAH SITE TO PROVIDE COVERAGE OF LEBANON CONFLICT
Tehran, 26 July (AKI) - Hezbollah's offensive against Israel will have a new tool from now on - online news coverage of the conflict. The Tehran branch of the Lebanon-based Shiite militant group announced on Wednesday that a new web site has been created to provide around-the-clock news of the "resistance against the Zionist invasion of Lebanon" the guerrilla group announced in a statement. The website - which viewers can access by clicking www.lobnannews.com or www.moqavemat.com - will be available in three languages, Arabic, Farsi and English.

Thanks for the further information on the background in the video penguino.
My pleasure, and many thanks to you, Ian, for all you do here!
I'm not exactly liking how those photos so strongly refer to us and that Zawahiri has such seemingly easy access to a professional studio these days.

Thanks for the info, penguino.
Looks like he might have had some professional help.
Controversy Over New Zawahiri Tape and Al Qaeda's Intentions
By Andrew Cochran
Last night, I posted on the newest video by Al Qaeda #2 Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Bill Roggio and I have updated it frequently since then. I wanted to post this separate note to report that Evan Kohlmann and other experts are noticing and generating lots of discussion about the precise translation and intent of the tape. Is Zawahiri empathizing in his tape with just the Sunni Lebanese, or also with Hezbollah, or is he even signalling the intent or desire to collaborate with Hezbollah (note some of the quotes in my post below)? Or is he just horning in on the action to raise Al Qaeda's profile and generate recruits? For many experts, the Sunni-Shia split is too great to be overcome, even by terrorists with a common desire to annihilate Israel. On the other hand, on July 16 Doug Farah posted "The Potential for a Hezbollah-al Qaeda Alliance of Convenience," with this note: "However, al Qaeda's own writings, and testimony of senior al Qaeda operatives in U.S. custody (Jamal al Fadl) recounted the extensive contacts bewtween the two organizations while bin Laden was in Sudan, including joint military and explosives training." He also pointed towards Imad Mugniya's work with both al Qaeda and Hezbollah. Magnus Ranstorp posted on July 14 and Bill Roggio posted on July 12 about Mugniya's history with Hezbollah and possible role in the current conflict. Precision in the tape translation and expert knowledge of the history of the groups and individuals are critical to the analysis of the tape and a forecast of the potential outcomes.
There is no jury in Ireland that would have convicted those islamo-lovers. To smash up a US military plane causing 2.4 million euro worth of damage and admit to this in a court of law, no less, and still get off is a subversion of Irish law. For me this is a wake up call that Ireland is now firmly in the anti-US camp - a friend of Hamas.
Language and CULTURE are key issues. We can't properly understand the language without its cultural context. Hezbollah has created some strange bedfellows - Iran and Syria. Iran, a Shia theotcracy and Syria, a secular Baathist and predominantly Sunni.
This discussion will no doubt continue to roil in the coming days -- and observers would be wise to carefully pay attention to the actual words of Al-Qaida's leaders and supporters rather than relying on diluted media interpretations or alternatively our own estranged theoretical perspectives.
Fortunately we have our own experts here.

Yeah.. I do find it's near impossible to show that Israel are the good guys in the Mid East - many seem to completely ignore the fact that Israel has bent over backwards for peace, only to be attacked even more.
It would be interesting to hear the veiwpoint of Irish troops working under UNIFIL.

The report concluded that Switzerland had become "a jihadi field of operation" and predicted that terrorist attacks were "an increasing possibility."

"Blame our establishment for appeasing these extremists"
By MELANIE PHILLIPS, Daily Mail09:01am 5th July 2006
Reader comments (15)
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "But this doesn't follow at all. Indeed, the Populus poll revealed that more than half of all British Muslims want the Government to do much more to root out the extremism being practised in the name of their religion.
It is beyond belief, for example, that what is hailed as the biggest mosque in Europe is planned to be built on the East London site of the Olympic village and it is being funded by the Tablighi Jamaat, said by the FBI and French intelligence to be the biggest recruiters for Al Qaeda in Europe.
Recruitment
It is beyond belief that nothing is being done to stop the recruitment and incitement to violence taking place not just in mosques and madrassas but on campuses, in youth clubs and in prisons.
It was concern over the depth of Britain's denial that caused me to write my book Londonistan which was almost not published in Britain because publishers thought it was not 'politically correct' precisely to sound the alarm over a widespread state of denial which, if unchecked, will have deadly consequences."

Doctor Charged in Drive-By Shooting
Las Vegas Sun/AP ^ | 27 July 06 | Associated Press
Posted on 07/27/2006 1:59:29 PM PDT by NavySEAL F-16
A doctor has been charged in the drive-by shooting of a bicyclist, who was hit in the chest and shoulder and is now recovering at the same hospital where the physician works.
Dr. Wameeth Fadhli, a doctor at the University of Texas Medical Branch hospital in Galveston, was jailed Thursday on $60,000 bond after being accused of firing numerous shots at the 22-year-old man on Tuesday.
According to witnesses, the victim was riding his bicycle when a sport utility vehicle pulled alongside and began firing what they described as a pistol. The witnesses told police the shooter was alone and wearing what appeared to be surgical scrubs, said Galveston County Sheriff's Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo.
