'Jesus with erection' ignites outrage (Oregon student newspaper response to Muhammad cartoons)

A Catholic activist organization has written to Oregon's governor and state lawmakers to protest a University of Oregon student newspaper for having published cartoons showing Jesus Christ naked and with an erection.

In its March edition, the Insurgent, an "alternative" student paper on the Eugene, Ore., campus printed 12 hand-drawn cartoons of Jesus as a response to rival paper the Commentator having published the controversial cartoons of Muhammad originally published in Europe that sparked Muslim riots worldwide. The Insurgent claimed it published the drawings to "provoke dialogue."

William Donohue, president of the Catholic League, says the university's president, John Frohnmayer, has been unresponsive to complaints about the drawings, so he has written to the governor, every state legislators and the chancellor of the Oregon University System, among others.

Drawing featured inside paper spanning two pages (image altered for propriety).

"The March edition of the Insurgent … was one of the most obscene assaults on Christianity I have ever seen," Donohue said in a statement. "To make sure that the persons I wrote to understand how vile this attack was, I sent a photocopy of the two most offensive graphics: one was a depiction of a naked Jesus on the cross with an erection; the other, titled 'Resurrection,' showed a naked Jesus kissing another naked man, both sporting erections."

Donohue also says there were other depictions of Jesus on the cross that were "so gratuitously offensive that only the most depraved would defend them." He also noted the paper published two commentaries attacking Catholicism.

"That all of this appeared in a student newspaper, during Lent, on the campus of a state institution, makes one wonder what is going on at the University of Oregon," added Donohue.

While not describing the more sexual drawings, the main student newspaper at the university, the Oregon Daily Emerald, also criticized the Insurgent.

"The Insurgent editorial indicates a desire to show Americans why the original cartoons were so offensive to the Muslim world," wrote the editor of the Emerald. "According to the editorial, 'What is "not a big deal" in the US (sic) is apparently a humongous big deal to others. Why should we assume it would not be?'

"However, printing home-grown cartoons depicting Jesus on a cross/pogo stick or Jesus on a cross/hangliding apparatus are not inflammatory in the same manner as the anti-Islam cartoons, and therefore fail to produce the intended empathy from Christians to Muslims."

Added the paper: "Unlike the Danish cartoons, the Insurgent drawings seem intended to simply incite controversy for controversy's sake rather than making specific social commentaries."

Calls to the Insurgent and Frohnmayer's office were not returned by press time.

’t break rules, ASUO official says
In Brief

By Nicholas Wilbur
Senior News Reporter

April 24, 2006

A student government officer ruled Friday against a youth minister’s accusations that The Student Insurgent’s latest edition contains hate-filled and discriminatory articles and images of Jesus, saying that the content doesn’t clash with any University or ASUO rules.

University student Zachary White, a student minister at the St. Thomas More Newman Center, filed an official complaint with the student government on April 13 in which he said the incidental fee, which all students pay, should not be used to print material that insults Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church, particularly.

“I find it intolerable and contrary to the University’s mission of tolerance and non-discrimination to use public funds to allow for discrimination of a religious group on campus,” White wrote in the complaint.

After meeting with a University attorney and reviewing the rules guide for possible violations of incidental fee use, ASUO Programs Administrator David Goward said Sunday it’s a “pretty black and white” issue. He ruled Friday that The Insurgent need not apologize nor refrain from publishing similar content in the future, both outcomes that White requested.

Liberals are always so interesting. They seek to offend a religious group with an image of its main figure, yet they rail at how horrible it is to offend Muslims by showing pictures of their main figure.

>>> there is still no concern that Christians are going to riot.

Don't worry. When the left sees they aren't getting the reaction they wanted, they will pay one of their own activist groups to go key a few cars in the 'religious right's' name.

No. We trust in a real, living God to exact his vengence on his own timetable. For that day, we can wait patiently.

It should be put to a mandate whether tax payer funding should be withheld from that school. It might pass even in Oregon.

So .. if somebody came up to your mother or father in a public restaurant and started calling them names .. would you react ..?? Or would you just sit there and take it - because after all .. they only did it for a reaction.

Nobody has to serve my God .. NOBODY .. but to say you're tolerant of all religions and then portray the God of the Universe (and the head of my religion) in such a perverse manner is rude and insulting. I do have a right to get mad.

As sickening and offensive as these cartoons are, there is still no concern that Christians are going to riot." Where do we riot? At the local 7/11 store?

That is a terrible conundrum.

Home Depot? Might be mistaken for an 'anti-(illegal)immigration riot.

Wal-Mart's parking lot? Might be mistaken for unionization zealots.

Dunkin Donuts? Only an idiot riots in front of a police station!

Local C-store? Might be mistaken as a gas price riot.

In the downtown business district? Probably be mistaken for anti-globalization anarchists.

Never realized how hard it was to stage a good, old fashion, unequivocal riot!

Googled the "artist," Johnny Correa. First citation, from the university newspaper, from an article titled and subtitled "Alliance asks University for new minor. Queer and sexuality studies programs, established nationwide at other universities, generate interest among UO students":

"bJohnny Correa, a member of the LGBTQA/b, said he is one of many who would be interested in minoring in queer studies.

There's the real source of the issue.

"As a Christian I am ***yawn*** very upset. Actually He can defend Himself quite well. He asked that my defense of Him is to love my enemies & forgive others. And the secret is I can't do it, so He does it thru me!"

That is so well put! I had to put it out there again. God bless FD and the horse he rode in on.

"The Insurgent editorial indicates a desire to show Americans why the original cartoons were so offensive to the Muslim world," wrote the editor of the Emerald.

To that end they will fail. I can assure you that no one will "lose their head" over this depiction of Jesus.

How utterly childish and immature. Mock the Lord all you want - one day you'll have to look him square in the eye and explain why you thought making fun of the Son of God was such a cool thing to do.

"These moronic adolescents should be asked if they have the guts to print something similar about Mohammed. Or are they the preening hypocrites we take them for?"

Well said. Christ got on the cross knowing this and more. What a major man he was. His act of humility and forgiveness makes my not flippin' the bird to someone who cut me off this morning look like a penny in Bill Gate's pocket.
