A Catholic activist organization has written to Oregon's governor and state lawmakers to protest a University of Oregon student newspaper for having published cartoons showing Jesus Christ naked and with an erection.
In its March edition, the Insurgent, an "alternative" student paper on the Eugene, Ore., campus printed 12 hand-drawn cartoons of Jesus as a response to rival paper the Commentator having published the controversial cartoons of Muhammad originally published in Europe that sparked Muslim riots worldwide. The Insurgent claimed it published the drawings to "provoke dialogue."
William Donohue, president of the Catholic League, says the university's president, John Frohnmayer, has been unresponsive to complaints about the drawings, so he has written to the governor, every state legislators and the chancellor of the Oregon University System, among others.

"The March edition of the Insurgent was one of the most obscene assaults on Christianity I have ever seen," Donohue said in a statement. "To make sure that the persons I wrote to understand how vile this attack was, I sent a photocopy of the two most offensive graphics: one was a depiction of a naked Jesus on the cross with an erection; the other, titled 'Resurrection,' showed a naked Jesus kissing another naked man, both sporting erections."
Donohue also says there were other depictions of Jesus on the cross that were "so gratuitously offensive that only the most depraved would defend them." He also noted the paper published two commentaries attacking Catholicism.
"That all of this appeared in a student newspaper, during Lent, on the campus of a state institution, makes one wonder what is going on at the University of Oregon," added Donohue.
While not describing the more sexual drawings, the main student newspaper at the university, the Oregon Daily Emerald, also criticized the Insurgent.
"The Insurgent editorial indicates a desire to show Americans why the original cartoons were so offensive to the Muslim world," wrote the editor of the Emerald. "According to the editorial, 'What is "not a big deal" in the US (sic) is apparently a humongous big deal to others. Why should we assume it would not be?'
"However, printing home-grown cartoons depicting Jesus on a cross/pogo stick or Jesus on a cross/hangliding apparatus are not inflammatory in the same manner as the anti-Islam cartoons, and therefore fail to produce the intended empathy from Christians to Muslims."
Added the paper: "Unlike the Danish cartoons, the Insurgent drawings seem intended to simply incite controversy for controversy's sake rather than making specific social commentaries."
Calls to the Insurgent and Frohnmayer's office were not returned by press time.
It's literally sophomoric. I blame the misguided notion that every kid should go to college. Most of them don't have the intelligence to profit from further education and just spend their years there cranking out drivel like this when they could be performing constructive tasks like picking lettuce or cleaning office buildings and solve our illegal alien problem to boot.
Googled the "artist," Johnny Correa. First citation, from the university newspaper, from an article titled and subtitled "Alliance asks University for new minor. Queer and sexuality studies programs, established nationwide at other universities, generate interest among UO students":
"Johnny Correa, a member of the LGBTQA, said he is one of many who would be interested in minoring in queer studies.
Id be very excited ... I think stuff on queer theory would be really interesting, looking at some of the cultural things that arise out of queer community, looking at race and class in the queer community.
While it may seem that the women and gender studies department would encompass the content of a queer studies minor, Correa said that because the two subjects are very different it doesnt make sense to lump them together.
He said examining an overarching view of queer life, including literature and experiences, would fit in well with the Universitys curriculum and although some classes are available, theres no comprehensive program.
My minor now is women and gender studies, and thats the closest I thing can get to queer theory ... but still, thats a certain perspective, Correa said.
He added that many students could appreciate and benefit from a sexualities minor.
People really want it, and we actually made a list on the wall of the classes we wanted to see, he said. We filled four or five giant parchments of paper.
Great....
Whenever I come across walking freakshows like this, I do my darndest to contact them, usually by email, and tell them I am praying for them. They get hysterical, telling me they don't the prayers from "my God." I just keep writing back that, I understand, I understand...but I must keep praying for your soul--it's what the Lord would want."
Oregon, IMHO, is a sick state! Besides the scenery, I haven't found anything in Oregon to like.
I agree with you. We should be outraged and that outrage should be made known. Not in rioting, but as we American's can do best.. in the wallet. We should make it a mission to let the outrage at an attack to our beliefs this horrific be known and pull kids out of that school and the rest of the list of ways to financiall crush them.
OMG I would hate to be the artist who dared to do that to Jesus. I'm sure God is gonna have a talk with him one day.
I agree. This takes real maturity and intellect. Not surprising from an Oregonian. These juvenile types are rampant here.
Given jihadist insecurities, I recommend Mohammed be drawn extremely underendowed with a microscope on top to accent the issue. Probably the reason why he liked raping 9 year old girls.
But people should have the character and good taste NOT to post cartoons that will offend the members of a particular religion.
To be perfectly honest I am nore pissed that a paper calling itself the Insurgent is allowed to even exist on an American college campus. here we are at war in Iraq with good men dying and these pieces of dog crap are defending the insurgents who are kiling our soldiers.
I would not riot over a cartoon of Jesus, These idiots will have to deal with Jesus when they face their Maker on judgement day, However I would gladly burn their stinking office when these traitors defend terrorists.
Why does this bother you so much? No one's being hurt by it. The whole purpose of it is to get a reaction. If you get mad, that means it had the desired effect on you.
No, this is what passes for "original thinking" among the pseudo-intellectual fraudocracy that clogs the academy these days.
True.
Just look at who liberals support and you will know how you should react to this.
Maybe somebody should inform this deviant that Christ would offer him every possible opportunity to repent, while Muhammad would decapitate him.
No, see, the Mohammed cartoons were funny. These things are just ugly and stupid.
One minor note: I peeked at the WND link to the U of Oregon site and John Frohnmayer, the former NEA chair, is not the president at Oregon. His brother, David is. But it's amusing that they've now both had to deal with controversies about "transgressive" art. (Or is that transgressive "art"? Oh, well....)
Well one just assumes that MohamMAD is in heaven with a boner else what to do with 72 virgins?
I'm sure that my blood pressure was at max, then I read your calming post.
Thank you.
As I understand it Mohammed could not get erections unless it was with a fetal pig.
there...fixed that
Nah, but boy, that artist better watch out or he'll wake up to old Sister Thelma's green bean casserole in his bed. You don't piss off those Methodists and their potluck dinners, no sir.
Cartoon of Muhammad with a bomb for a turban drawn and Muslims riot = cartoonist was bad for blaspheming the Prophet and Muslims are just defending their faith.
Picture of Jesus Christ with an erection and kissing another man drawn and Christians grumble = cartoonist is good for defending freedom of expression and Christians are just being intolerant.
There. Did I get the liberal logic on that one about right?
