Ariz. Gov. Vetoes Criminal Immigrant Bill
Associated Press ^ | Apr 18 11:08 AM US/Eastern | JACQUES BILLEAUD

Posted on 04/18/2006 10:18:22 AM PDT by BradtotheBone

Gov. Janet Napolitano vetoed a bill that would have criminalized the presence of illegal immigrants in Arizona, citing opposition from police agencies that want immigration arrests to remain the responsibility of the federal government.

The proposal would have expanded the state's trespassing law to let local authorities arrest illegal immigrants anywhere in Arizona, the nation's busiest illegal entry point. Congress also had considered criminalizing the presence of illegal immigrants in the country.

In a letter to lawmakers, Napolitano said she opposes automatically turning all immigrants who sneaked into the state into criminals and that the bill provided no funding for the new duties.

"It is unfortunate that the Legislature has once again ignored the officials who are most directly affected by illegal immigration and instead has passed yet another bill that will have no effect on the problem but that will impose an unfunded burden on law enforcement," Napolitano wrote Monday.

Supporters said the bill would have given Arizona a chance to get a handle on its vast border problems by providing a second layer of enforcement to catch the tens of thousands of immigrants who slip past federal agents each year.

Republican Sen. Barbara Leff of Paradise Valley, who proposed the bill, said the governor has painted herself as tough on illegal immigration by declaring a state of emergency at Arizona's border, but has taken little action to back up her rhetoric.

"I don't think the governor wants to do anything about this problem," Leff said. She said the bill would have been a means to detain illegal immigrants until federal agents can pick them up.

The Democratic governor, accused by her Republican critics of being soft on immigration, has vetoed other immigration bills from the GOP- majority Legislature within the past year, including a proposal to give police the power to enforce federal immigration laws.

While immigrants provide the economy with cheap labor, Arizona spends tens of millions of dollars each year in health care and education costs for illegal workers and their families. An estimated 500,000 of the state's population of about 6 million are illegal immigrants.

No surprise. And yet, it's still a disappointment.

Oh the Feds are letting us down". True so get off your butts States and do something about it instead of sitting on butt squealing for the Feds to come "rescue" you.

Because it's easier to pass it the off to the Feds and complain

More States should do what Georgia just passed

I'm afraid what we're going to have to do is help the ranchers wall off their own property. Not that it's going to be easy.

Unfortunately the nature of a ranching operation precludes a walled compund for safety. Besides such "protection" would be illusory since they might serve to keep victims inside if a determined force were to penetrate the perimeter to mete out some border retaliation...

A far more workable solution is to recruit the ranchers as "in place" recon units. Give them military radios and night vision gear and the training to use that equipment. With the national guard on standby, a rancher sighting a large group of illegals with maybe a covering force made up of MS 13 or the Mexican Army...could simply radio in the sighting without anybody being the wiser. Then a swift reaction force of Apaches and Bradley's could respond.

The US Border Patrol is forced to withdraw in the face of Humvees mounting M2HB 50's because they're outgunned and of course subject to STUPID Rules of Engagement imposed by the feds. I wonder how the shoe would feel on that other foot across the border when a flight of Apaches screams in to politely inquire if they need directions back to Mexico City?

Are you feigning ignorance or admitting laziness?

It would really help if they just made the laws simpler.

Not at all. You didn't illegally enable the citizens actions to your own benefit.

Yes, you do. You committed an illegal act which enabled her to live here and become a cost to that hospital.

Your arguments are preposterous. Even your strawman arguments are weak and easily answered.

I wouldn't rely on a paper document at all.

Every employer should have access to a government database that can validate the information provided in seconds.

Input SS#, previous employer, addresses of previous employers, home addresses for previous five years, place of birth, mother's maiden name. Everybody legally here has an electronic trail a mile long. If somebody gives you an SS# that is already in the system as employed 50 miles away, retired, dead, different home address, etc. you should find that and know not to hire them. If somebody pops up as already employed locally, ask what their hours at the other job are and check with that other employer.

I don't know what Sherrif Joe's total costs are. In general, prison inmates cost the taxpayer more than manual labor is worth. If they are first-time offenders and non-violent criminals, then it would be much cheaper to put them on the other side of the fence. If we had a fence.

According to the Geneva Convention these are known as SPIES and can be EXECUTED.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have been waiting months for someone to catch that and come to the correct conclusion. They are spies and we can eliminate the problem easily. Now do we have the guts to follow "internatioanl law" in dealing with it.

Well, she talked a good game. Now that we're down to the nut-cuttin', she's on the 20% side of an 80% issue. Nice day's work, Janet.

I just saw a poll on this twit and she is still riding high in the polls with regard to the election in November. Hope someone from the right side can change that because she needs to be kicked out of office.

WHAT is Gov Nappie DOING with all that Fed money?

Maybe that's where Arizona is getting its surplus budget from that Nappie is taking full credit for. It's the only explanation as the woman has not cut anything, has run through extra spending. She wants the surplus used for her pet projects like full day kindergarten.

Oh! They claim that there is not enough funding for such enforcement, but there is enough for special social projects and for the city of Phoenix to make sure that there is enforcement of dogs staying on leashes in parks.

"The State of Georgia just passed such a law that would punish businesses that hire illegals."

If only the majority of states passed these laws, and enforced them; then you would have a handful of states that refuse to do it e.g lost cali.

What would one expect from a mexican governor. Get rid of her...elect an anglo governor...then resubmit this bill. It'll NOT be vetoed.
