Immigration is not the pox neo-Know Nothings make it out to be

Princeton University sociologist Douglas S. Massey reports that 62 percent of illegal immigrants pay income taxes (via withholding) and 66 percent contribute to Social Security. Forbes magazine notes that Mexican illegals aren't clogging up the social-services system: only 5 percent receive food stamps or unemployment assistance; 10 percent send kids to public schools.

Economist Larry Kudlow praises Hispanic entrepreneurship: "According to 2002 Census Bureau data, Hispanics are opening businesses at a rate three times faster than the national average. In addition, there were almost 1.6 million Hispanic-owned businesses generating $222 billion in revenue in 2002."

Total crime and property crime in California are half what they were in 1980; violent crime has fallen more than a third. The state's Hispanic population during that time has increased 120 percent.

Knowingly employing an illegal alien is already a felony.

"I am perfectly of your mind, that measures of great Temper are necessary with the Germans: and am not without Apprehensions, that thro' their indiscretion or Ours, or both, great disorders and inconveniences may one day arise among us; Those who come hither are generally of the most ignorant Stupid Sort of their own Nation, and as Ignorance is often attended with Credulity when Knavery would mislead it, and with Suspicion when Honesty would set it right; and as few of the English understand the German Language, and so cannot address them either from the Press or Pulpit, 'tis almost impossible to remove any prejudices they once entertain. Their own Clergy have very little influence over the people; who seem to take an uncommon pleasure in abusing and discharging the Minister on every trivial occasion. Not being used to Liberty, they know not how to make a modest use of it; and as Kolben says of the young Hottentots, that they are not esteemed men till they have shewn their manhood by beating their mothers, so these seem to think themselves not free, till they can feel their liberty in abusing and insulting their Teachers. Thus they are under no restraint of Ecclesiastical Government; They behave, however, submissively enough at present to the Civil Government which I wish they may continue to do: For I remember when they modestly declined intermeddling in our Elections, but now they come in droves, and carry all before them, except in one or two Counties; Few of their children in the Country learn English; they import many Books from Germany; and of the six printing houses in the Province, two are entirely German, two half German half English, and but two entirely English; They have one German News-paper, and one half German. Advertisements intended to be general are now printed in Dutch and English; the Signs in our Streets have inscriptions in both languages, and in some places only German: They begin of late to make all their Bonds nad other legal Writings in their own Language, which (though I think it ought not to be) are allowed good in our Courts, where the German Business so encreases that there is continual need of Interpreters; and I suppose in a few years they will be also necessary in the Assembly, to tell one half of our Legislators what the other half say; In short unless the stream of their importation could be turned from this to other colonies, as you very judiciously propose, they will soon so out number us, that all the advantages we have will not in My Opinion be able to preserve our language, and even our Government will become precarious." -- Benjamin Franklin

Even Ben was wrong about assimilation.

The IRS hasn't been able to match W-2 and withholding tax returns on a current basis until just very recently.

And eventually the truth bears out. The "illegal" aspect is that some people have been adjudicated--by the bedrock bastion of justice known as the IRS--to be "illegal". Heck, lets do away with the United States Supreme Court. Everyone can choose to amend their IRS return without penalty (or due process). The economic and societal impacts are all-important. Silly rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are so passe'. But do not forget to appropriate another $100 billion or so for a bunch of ungrateful ragheads in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is the conservative way....

I can't quote the source, Luis or the reliability of the information. But I read/heard within the past week or so that Mexicans/latinos are converting to Islam in droves.

Then the problem must be lack of enforcement.

"Then the problem must be lack of enforcement."

BINGO!!!!

Throw a couple of Tyson execs in jail on a few hundred felony charges for hiring illegal aliens, and you'll see how the rest sit up and take notice.

"I'll discuss things with you whenever you decide to talk like an adult."

An adult is able to differentiate between a real threat and a farcical strawman, and is not afraid to take any necessary action to keep the family safe from harm.

Maturity and indifference are not synonymous terms.

Here's is what they call "growth of Islam" in Mexico:

"About 300 Tzozil-Indians have converted to Islam in recent years and it's a development that is beginning to worry the Mexican government, said the Der Spiegel report. The government even suspects the new converts of subversive activity and has already set the secret service onto the track of the Mayan Muslims. Mexican President Vincente Fox has even gone so far as to say he fears the influence of the radical fundamentalists of al-Qaida."

They won't get far south of the border.

Are all those statistics for the period 1989-1998? If so they may be far from reflecting the trends of today.

You think that it's changed that much in a few yeas?

Nothing has changed down there in hundreds of years.

"I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove ten to twenty million people from our soil effectively, and without making us look like we are conducting something akin to ethnic cleansing."

By deporting ALL illegal aliens. India managed very easily to deport 11 million foreign nationals who entered their country illegally, and has done a much better job of securing their borders than the Bush Administration.

Deportation is neither inhumane or unjust. If I were in another country illegally I would understand perfectly if I were arrested ot asked to leave no matter how long I'd been there. Defending the country is more important than keeping up appearances to anti-American foreign interests.

"Knowingly employing an illegal alien is already a felony."

Failing to verify immigration status before employing them is not. That's why illegal immigration has flourished.
