Poms lack humour over ad: Abbott (Bloody Poms ALERT!!!)
Herald Sun ^ | 10 March 2006

BRITAIN'S ban on the word "bloody" in Australia's new tourism campaign showed that the nation was "slightly humourless", federal Health Minister Tony Abbott said.

Britain's Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre has objected to Tourism Australia's $180 million campaign, which features the tag line: "So where the bloody hell are you?".

Mr Abbott said he thought the British should have a laugh.

"I think it is slightly humourless on the part of the poms," he said Sydney.

"Nevertheless, I can understand how some people of a more fastidious disposition possibly would like a different slogan."

Asked of he liked it personally, Mr Abbott replied: "I am not in the business of advertising".

He said the furore surrounding the campaign made him think of former Prime Minister Billy Hughes' efforts to explain democracy to a group of shearers.

"He was trying to say that democracy is one man, one vote, and the shearers were scratching their heads," Mr Abbott said.

"Eventually Billy exploded with rage and said 'look, look, one bloody man, one bloody vote ... and the shearers said 'why didn't you say in the first place'."

I think it is a rhyme. If you speak "septic tank" fast enough such as in Australian English, it is a rhyme with Yank. This is why Australians started to use it as a codename for Yanks, and then dropping the second word "tank" altogether.

It is very distinctively Australian English - one which even we across the Tasman don't use.

Using the term Poms is bound to be the most offensive one to British.

I don't (nor do I know anyone who does), mind being called a pommie.

I think it's the b*st*rd that usually follows that sometimes gives offence!

:-)

ALL TOGETHER NOW:

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
who could think you under the table.
David Hume could out consume
Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel,
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
who was just as sloshed as Schlegel.

There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya
'bout the raisin' of the wrist.
Socrates himself was permanently pissed.

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
after half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
Plato, they say, could stick it away,
'alf a crate of whiskey every day!
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle,
and Hobbes was fond of his Dram.
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart:
"I drink, therefore I am."

Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed;
A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's pissed.

""Bloody"?

That's not even considered profanity here in the States. Like "shag" or "bugger".

"Bloody" as an expression traces it's origins to a bit of blasphemy in the expression "Blood of Christ" used as an expression of exasperation or disgust.

Knowing it's origin one can see how some would find it in poor taste

On the other hand Canadians love to wear their Roots wear down in Australia and sing Take me out to the ball game. :)

If we're wankers, why have so many poms been lining up to get out here for the past 200 years?

A rhetorical question. I've been to England. I know why! LOL!

We've got a few Canadians down here at the minute for the Commonwealth Games. That could be a damn dangerous t-shirt!

Judging from previous Commonwealth games results, the Canadian team will once again be eaten alive by the Aussies. (Hopefully no Canadian reads this post ;-) )

You Poms are always good for a laugh!

I wish you'd stop so many of your nationals trying to come out here. Not that I can blame them.

You're obviously unaware of the Kiwis' unfortunate habits with sheep!

I'm not surprised Aussies in The Old Dart are constantly legless. God knows, there's nothing else over there to do.

What does surprise me is they can afford the grog! Not that any self-respecting human would drink that warm sheepdip that passes for beer in England!

LOL! You blokes are a hoot!

You are clearly not aware of our prosperity under John Howard. Beats that PM of yours (& his missus) hands down.

My dearest friend in the world was a Pom. Tragically, she passed away last year. Whenever she went back to visit her family, she could never wait to get back home. She cherished her Aussie citizenship in a way that was quite inspirational.
