Poms lack humour over ad: Abbott (Bloody Poms ALERT!!!)
Herald Sun ^ | 10 March 2006

Posted on 03/09/2006 8:36:45 PM PST by Aussie Dasher

BRITAIN'S ban on the word "bloody" in Australia's new tourism campaign showed that the nation was "slightly humourless", federal Health Minister Tony Abbott said.

Britain's Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre has objected to Tourism Australia's $180 million campaign, which features the tag line: "So where the bloody hell are you?".

Mr Abbott said he thought the British should have a laugh.

"I think it is slightly humourless on the part of the poms," he said Sydney.

"Nevertheless, I can understand how some people of a more fastidious disposition possibly would like a different slogan."

Asked of he liked it personally, Mr Abbott replied: "I am not in the business of advertising".

He said the furore surrounding the campaign made him think of former Prime Minister Billy Hughes' efforts to explain democracy to a group of shearers.

"He was trying to say that democracy is one man, one vote, and the shearers were scratching their heads," Mr Abbott said.

"Eventually Billy exploded with rage and said 'look, look, one bloody man, one bloody vote ... and the shearers said 'why didn't you say in the first place'."

Hey, it's still daytime where you are, isn't it?

I work 2nd shift, so that means I'm up most of the night.

Too bad intercontinental phone calls are so expensive - one of my old, old friends emigrated to Oz a few years back - he lives in WA outside Perth.

Yep. Just after half-past-four in the afternoon. Nearly knock-off time.

Three days off coming up for a long weekend.

That is Rule 3. Rule 2 is:

"Rule Two, no member of the faculty is to maltreat the Abbos in any way at all -- if there's anybody watching"

LOL God I love the Pythons. I got Graham Chapman's "Yellowbeard" book the other day. It's got his original nove, the screenplay, and lots of ther goodies.

I remember my first visit to Darwin. I was told by a charming young lady behind the hotel reception desk, "If any Abos give you a hard time, just push 'em over. They'll be p*ssed! (as in drunk).

Fortunately, they didn't and nor did I!

As in "Septic Tanks" (rhyming slang for Yanks).

*Chortle*

No need to explain "pissed" - I know a bit of Pommy and Aussie slang. :-)

"Septics"

Septic? Where did that come from? Yank is the only nickname for Americans that I've ever encountered and I've been a few places in my military career.

I was thinking "pomfret"

Hmm, the only Pomfret I know of was a comedic relief character in a Dorothy Sayers novel.

Or, maybe the Anglicanization of the French pommes frites...

Any one here care to give a clueless kitty some help?

My brain must have a hairball tonight...

Cheers!

Just where did the name Pommies come from?

It may have come from pomegranate, pommes, the French word for potatoes, or POM, meaning "permit of migration," a sort of "green card."

Using the term Poms is bound to be the most offensive one to British. In each and every instance I use it, the conservative-in-name-only, Tory-but-not-conservative, and plain-leftist types hurl back insults. It seems they prefer eny term - Limeys, Brits (they like that one - they use this among themselves), Old Country residents, the civilised race, whatever, but not Poms.

This is why I enjoy calling such types of Britons Poms.

I know exactly what a septic tank is, I just replaced the one at my Dad's house. How does that term relate to a nickname for an American?

I'm familiar with the origin of "Digger", "Doughboy", "Yank", and "Limey" but I've never heard of the term "Septic" used as a cultural nickname.
