Yes, I agree this was a hystrionic bit of silliness stirred up by Hillary whose pockets are being well-lined by...Dubai. I have never seen such utter foolishness.

Even one ME country that will do business, including welcoming the US Navy, is a plus. Losing such, especially as they need not have been driven off so pointedly, makes the task that much harder.

Appreciate your reply. I disagree with you on one key point that comes to mind. In particular, where and or when do you start to trust a country that has been a strong ally in the region. How can we trust anyone in the world? The shoebomber was a Brit.

I suspect in many ways we agree on more things than we realize.

DPW (UAE) and Zim (IL) have had shipping agreements for years, in spite of the tirades (posts) on FR by people calling DPW anti semitic.

They aren't empty now, they are operated by the Brit company, but they just pulled that part of the buyout of the Brit companies assets off the table.

While I can understand why they'd be upset, the fact that they pulled out so early in the 45 day review period makes one wonder if there wasn't something more to this that would have been discovered by a more thorough review.

I had never thought the DPW had any nefarious motives, but was concerned about any folks they might send to work here. They'd be management folks, but might also be a Uncle Achmed's third son, nepotism is rampant in Arab lands, who unbeknownst to Uncle Achmed or his nephew, had come under the spell of a firebrand Wahabbist Imam, and been put in contact with Hamas, or Al Qaeda.

Oh, you mean kind of like the management company they already have in place in Adelaide, Australia? Can you tell me which one of these people are Uncle Achmed's third son?

Will the longshoremen get locked out while the "new company" gets organized? What if P&O says : "we don't own it, we're not making any money here, so we're out of here?"

Even though this deal is dead some Senators are planning a vote against Dubai. Any Republicans that join this charade will no longer get any money from me and if I donate to the party I will specify who I don't want to get any.

I agree, by the way some speak, one would think we just lost our best ally in the WOT, and our economy is going to collapse. As far as potentially losing a key future staging ground for an attack on Iran...we will have a much better coalitition for an Iran than we did for Iraq, should an "event" occur.

I am very glad that this deal will not happen, and hope that the UAE could understand why Americans were concerned about the deal, they should be able to realize why we were concerned.

I'm not necessarily defending the people who were against the ports deal.

I am defending America from a broad brushing statement that a majority of Americans are by and large ignorant.

As I said the ports deal death was the right thing for America at this specific time.

Not necessarily right because we turned out a friendly ally but because it brought many Americans together and also highlighted other problems that loom to be larger in our future.

From my point of view this play out of the ports deal was fun to watch.

To see the hypocritical politicians on both sides turn against or turn on to their true colors.

I see this as a major monstrous win for the Republican base and will be born out in the coming elections.

Given enough time the radical Dimorats will shoot themselves in the foot.

As an example, even after the collapse of the ports deal this morning, the Rats are continuing to their detriment to WHINE and dine on a dead subject.

Rats never know when to stop, I guess this is caused by their immature eagerness to win one ever once in a while.

What have we lost? The US Navy is still there or is this just vengeful wishful thinking on your part. Can't you at least until something actually happens before you say I told you so?

Okay, Leni, as you know FReepers notice things and speak up.

Apparently, the deal is on the way to a "face-saving" resolution for all concerned; a resolution, however, that is in the best interests of OUR country.

I have not learned any affection for the UAE.

And, as for Congress, since you showed how quickly you can act in the interests of national security .... Ahem ....can we get our immigration laws ENFORCED.... NOW??!!

Congress could do a lot more, the week is not over. They could undo several years of diplomacy with China, India, and Russia before the weekend.

He should just start wrapping the WOT up and make some guest appearances.

He might as well. He has lost all support and credibility within Congress. That is; the Pubbies cannot support him in the WOT with any credibility now. Combine that with the massive loss of credibility of America as a whole in the pro-America/pro-WOT arab world (such that we had) and the whole effort has just been p!$$ed away.

So your idea of a friendship is that it is purely a one way street, that you can insult a friend, slander their reputation, and threaten their economic interests and they should just bend over and take it? So the UAE is suppose to buy Boeing's passenger jets and give the US Navy unlimited use of its ports and we pay that back by kicking them in the a** and if they don't say "Thank you sir, may I have another?" then they're not true friends? I would suggest sir that it is the US that is not a true friend. If your idea of friendship is to screw over a friend and then declare them disloyal when they don't just sit back and take it, then I am glad we're not friends.

They're our "friends", alright, yup.
Just like the Saudis are, right?
Just like the Pakistanis are, right?
Just like the Jordanians are, right?
Just like the Egyptians, are, right?

ALL of the above would rejoice at the destruction of Israel. And I contend that ALL would rejoice in the destruction of the Christian West (including America), with replacement by an Islamic Caliphate.

I would trust ANY of the above-mentioned "friends" about as far as I could throw 'em. And that ain't very far.

The United States has only _ONE_ "friend" in the Middle East and the rest of the Islamic world. The rest of 'em are out to get us.

The so-called "ports deal" didn't even have the legs of Harriet Miers. Over and done with. And good riddance.

If that makes me an "Islamaphobe" and a "racist", I will wear such labels with pride, so heave them away at me.

I'm not so sure I'd go with "strong" ally, they have some proving to do.
As for the shoebomber, I think you'd agree that Britain has been a strong ally for real...for real.
