Harry Browne, who was the Libertarian Party presidential candidate in 1996 and 2000, is reported by multiple sources to have died yesterday. I just confirmed the general information with Jim Babka of DownSizeDC. DownSizeDC intends to be distributing pertinent information by e-mail and on their website later this evening.
Pending a statement from family or friends, the best (speculative) published source of information about his condition is currently on Wiki:
"In June of 2005 an unknown neurological illness confined him to a wheelchair. After spending a considerable amount of time in the hospital, he resumed some of his writing and speaking, though it was uncertain whether he will walk again. He succumbed to illness on 1 March 2006."
I'm bummed out by this. Liberty lost a big advocate.
RIP, Harry Browne.
RIP
RIP, Harry.
kyrie eleison
amen
I guess he really was downsized. RIP
Some quotes from Mr. Browne:
The free market punishes irresponsibility. Government rewards it.
I want a government small enough to fit inside the Constitution.
Republicans campaign like Libertarians and govern like Democrats.
Thanks for the ping. RIP, Harry.
Condolences to Harry Browne's family and friends.
RIP.
Condolences to his family.
Very sad. He was the first Presidential candidate I ever voted for. I was one of 150 people in my county that voted for him in 2000. LOL At the time I was joking with my wife that 140 or so of the other people that voted for him probably meant to vote for someone else.
RIP
I saw some interviews with him. He struck me as a good and decent man. Prayers for the repose of his soul.
However, comments like this after 9/11 from Mr Browne caused me to shift away from the LP for good:
"It is American foreign policy that has provoked the attacks, not anything inherent in Muslim fundamentalism."
"The fact that bin Laden uses bad means to achieve his ends doesn't excuse our own government's mistakes; nor does it justify our government doing the same things he does."

I good friend of mine recently died from ALS. He was an independent person who at the end was helpless, trapped and totally dependent.
It was a great relief when he died.
RIP for all who have suffered from ALS.
Though, it could be easily judged the better way if they used kennedy's name, or clinton's name, or
:)
RIP
Mr. Browne was a patriot and an American in the finest senses of those words.
"Anyone who would go on a national talk show { O'Reilly Factor} and say ; " yes I agree with that, Bill I think if a 10 year old boy wants to go to his local pharmacy, and purchase heroin, then shoot up, it's OK with me" IMHO is beneath contempt, and the Libertarian { just another name for anarchist} LOONIES wonder why they are the 1% nut jobs of American politics."
Sorry, there is NO WAY Harry Browne said this. You're either paraphrasing, misquoting, or outright lying. Harry was about personal responsibility yes, but personal responsibility by ADULTS. You remember the quote wrongly. He said, in effect, that up until the 1950's, Americans, even a 10 year old boy, could go to the pharmacy and purchase heroin for his mother as a headache powder. His point was that drug problems came on when they were outlawed. Your attempt to besmirch a great American's name is disgusting. Get your story straight or keep your trap shut.
Mine too. For some reason, it's strange and sad to think that the first person I ever voted for (President being at the top of the ballot) is dead. Just as it was strange and sad when President Reagan died, as when I was young it was as though he was the only president who had ever been.
R.I.P., Mr. Browne.
Right. We would have had a three party debacle.
