I was sitting here tonight listening to Mozart's Requiem and I got to thinking: what do I consider to be the best work of music ever? For my part, Mozart's work really does the trick for me when I need to be re-energized. Therefore, I believe that his Requiem is the greatest work of all time. There just isn't another work that is as powerful and passionate. When the chorus sings the final "Amen" at the end of "Lacrimosa" I get the feeling that he knew it was the last thing he would ever write. It gives me chills at times.
Other favorites are:
Handel's Messiah
The 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky
Heh heh. Close.
Though, Freddy Mercury was pretty talented for his time, too.
I know the man. Yeah, man! I played with that cat last year, man!
Yep -- Queen really pushed the envelope. Freddy's voice was once in a generation. Sadly, like so many Greats, his lifestyle killed him young.
Actually, its only 4 notes, if you toss out the dupes. It is amazing how many riffs you can develop from a simple short melody.
Goodnight, dude. Good thread. LOL.
Yes, Beethoven's Ninth is the first one I thought of. Walter Carlos's rendition (on the sound track from A Clockwork Orange--yeah, yeah, the movie stank, but the soundtrack is phenomenal) is the ultimate version.
Pachelbel's Canon
At first glance I would expect a 45 with Nimoy's Ballad of Bilbo Baggins on one side and nothing on the other. ;-)
Oh yeah, Layla and Roundabout are way up there.
Uh Sorry, but not end of story.
J.S. Bach's the Art of Fugue as performed by either the Keller Quartet or the Quartetto Bernini. I just downloaded the latter version (Bernini) off of iTunes. Just phenomenal. Know other composer in history could have possibly written it. Period. It is music in its purest and most uncompromising form. No other composer could even hope to imitate it.
Other honorable mentions :
1. Fantasias for Viol by Purcell.
2. The Cello Suites by Bach.
3. Mass in B Minor by Bach (Jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis once called this the finest musical work, -that's gotta tell you someting).
4. "Thus Spake Zarathustra" by Strauss.
5. Ok, Beethoven's 9th.
6. Kind of Blue - Miles Davis. Timeless. ;>)
My momma talkin' to me tryin' to tell me how to live
But I don't listen to her cause my head is like a sieve
My daddy he disowned me cause I wear my sister's clothes
He caught me in the bathroom with a pair of pantyhose
My basketball coach he done kicked me off the team
For wearing high heeled sneakers and acting like a queen
The world's comin' to an end and I don't even care
As long as I can have a limo and my orange hair
And it don't bother me if people think I'm funny
Cause I'm a big rock star and I'm making lots of money
Money (x5)
I'm so bloody rich
I own apartment buildings and shopping centers
And I only know three chords
Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1
'Summertime' from Porgy and Bess.
Rhapsody in Blue or An American in Paris by Gershwin.
'You'll Never Walk Alone' by Rodgers and Hammerstein
As a guitarist, Freebird is legend. Skynyrd also has the same stocatto, in general, as Vivaldi. In music, one likes what one likes. Explaining it is futile.
Agnus Dei, also known as Adagio for Strings. Played in mission 3 and 16 of the game Homeworld. Also played in some movies.
The neat thing about Yes was they fused Brahms and rock, they created prog rock.
Amazing Grace, I don't care who sings it, the song moves me every time I hear it. The lyrics dont even have to be there, it's a very moving song played on a bugle, bagpipes, even on harmonica.
The Star Spangled Banner.
Beethoven's 9th
is that a picture of George Carlin?
Here are the top ten 2005 in reverse order. Interesting that Beethoven has three and Mozat only one. Based on the number of completed works one would think the reverse to be true.
