Bush Says He Will Veto Any Bill to Stop UAE Port Deal

WASHINGTON — In a rare display of his veto authority President Bush said Tuesday he will put the kibosh on any legislation that attempts to stop the purchase by a United Arab Emirates-owned firm of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., which runs six major U.S. ports.

Breaking a gaping silence during the debate of the purchase by Dubai Ports World, Bush said the deal should go forward and won't jeopardize U.S. security.

Officials from the Cabinet departments that participate in the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States, which approved the sale last Monday, are appearing in a briefing Tuesday afternoon to defend the process by which CFIUS reviewed and approved the deal.

Officials from the Treasury, Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security will participate.

The UAE company does NOT handle the security. The Load and Unload ships. That is what they do. All security is handled by the USA.

Does anyone understand why Bush is doing this?

Because he promised sombody behind the scenes to support it probably...and he and his circle stand to profit...

Before any Phsycho Bunny BushBots chime in...

BUSH NEEDS TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS IS GOOD FOR AMERICA

Dubai is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

But you can't explain how or why it would be good for America, or trust Bush on this matter, only that we should 'cuz it's GW doing it.

I've trusted him to do what he thinks is right for America thus far and he hasn't let us down yet. Our stance in this war is due to his leadership.

"What ? We are incapable of running our own ports now?"

No, that was ages ago. Apparantly we Brits are now incapable of running your ports though ;)

Post #25 is an interesting place to start for the answer to your question. Just because the country is an ally certainly does not suggest that everyone in the country is also an ally. It only takes one bad apple.

Right after 9/11 President Bush forewarned us that there would be times that we did not understand what was going on.

I am confused- I have no idea what is going on...BUT, I trust the President.

You may be right...you may not. Nevertheless, it's a dumb move politically. It LOOKS bad. It gives the dems fodder that most people will agree with.

No argument from me. I fully agree, except the word "terrible" is a might easy on him in my opinion. Basically, I am very disheartened in the President. Have I lost faith in him, yes. Not to say that I have totally lost all support for him, but I have lost a lot. I am amazed at some of his decisions, the directions his government is going, the scandals, etc. Enough crap is enough crap. Politicians all appear to be the same, regardless of the suit they wear.

We should trust Bush. He knows what he's doing.

Sorry, no can do. We need to hold ALL of our elected officials feet to the fire. That is what citizenship is all about.

Er...what part of this article didn't you understand? In this case he clearly does not.

No foreign company/country should have control over any part of our national security. Period.

Dubai mostly hires immigrants to do their work, at dirt cheap wages, that's why they can be more profitable than other countries. I suspect that this will become the new Democrat talking point regarding the deal.

Amazing. The one time George would use the veto is to give his conservative base the finger. He wouldn't veto McCain-Feingold. He wouldn't veto a staggering pile of pork-barrel projects. But he'll veto those who would hold him to his "Fight any nation or regime who supports or harbors terrorists." rhetoric

Well, I predict that he will not use the veto on this one, because "something" will prevent the sale of the company. But in any event, as much as I admire the president, he is still a "politician." so let's see what he does.

The liberal media is again pushing their agenda on this matter. They hate Bush.
