There were some eye-opening remarks from Bryant Gumbel on the most recent episode of HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel. According to a transcript posted by a television columnist named Seth Frelich, Gumbel said the following in his closing monologue last week (emphasis mine):
"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who dont care about them and wont watch them ... Because theyre so trying ... Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the worlds greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that somethings not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in whats called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day theyre done, when we can move on to March Madness for Gods sake, let the games begin."
See point number 2 in my last post.
I asked my parents and my brother if they were watching The Olympics.
Their reply "Oh, the Olympics are going on now?"
Good list at #51. Add Larry Elder to that list.
Bryant - how many blacks are in Bush's cabinet as opposed to Clinton's?
Also - what will you say when Swann, Blackwell and Steele all win high profile Republican offices? Will they be "Uncle Tom's?"
Your brother Greg has to be so embarassed by you.
*crickets* (in agreement with your post)
STOP!!!! ITS NOT A RACIST COMMENT!
We always criticize the Dems for overreacting when we make jokes or comments about race (Rush/McNabb-Trent lott at the Thurmand dinner etc.) and now it seems like a DU board on here...."hes a racist, he should apoligize, waaa!"
We have all at one time or another participated or laughed at a joke about race. I, as a matter of fact, use the same joke he does on occasion. When my friend (whos black and a dem) and I drive by the welfare trailor, I always tell him it looks like the Democratic national convention. He dosen't call me a racist and start crying...and neither should any of you. It may be a joke in bad taste for the forum he's on, but it dosen't make it a racist comment.
####paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP Convention####
I'll bet the same thing can be said about the neighborhood he chooses to live in.
"See point number 2 in my last post."
Yes. I just meant to say that the same can be said of most of the white athletes also. Seems to be a lot of trust funds skiing down the slopes of Turin.
Pseudo-athletes? I'd like to see Gumbel do a triple axel.
No this is a racist comment, it's more than just the "looks like a GOP convention" part. Before that he says he's going to give a list of reasons to not watch the winter games, then among that he includes the lack of black athletes and says that means the winter games don't have the best athletes in the world. That's racist, that's racist twice, first in saying we shouldn't watch the games because there's so few black, and second saying this can't be a collection of great athletes because there's so few black.
A guy named Radcliff that goes to Harvard. They probably get a big kick out of that in Cambridge.
It is a racist comment and he should be called on it. First he says the athletes aren't really athletes BECAUSE THERE ARE NO BLACKS. Implication being that whites aren't capable of being elite athlets. Then he references the GOP Convention as being all white, the implication being that the GOP exludes blacks.
Wake Up.
*snort*
Oh, great, affirmative action for the Winter Olympics!
Hey, Gumbel, use the remote and change the channel. Works for me. Gumbel is an affirmative action baby.
This is unbelievable! No wonder things never change.
If we as conservatives can't let a snide remark like this slide, how can we defend the next republican who makes an off the cuff remark when the Dems start harping. I understand and agree that what happened to Rush and Lott were stupid (neither of them should have lost their jobs), but just because the dems cry and are sensitive dosen't mean we have to do the same.
"I'd like to see Gumbel do a triple axel."
I'd like to see Gumbel do anything.
I question her taste.
